  1. Camms also used to have a double decker with the upstairs side walkway. I used to travel to school on it when they ran special school busses from Broxtowe Lane to my school, High Pavement. I don't know what make of bus it was though, sorry!
  2. I am so sad to hear of the death of Larry Lloyd. He and Kenny Burns were absolutely solid at the back for Forest in their glory days. I shall have to watch my DVD of Forest again tonight "I believe in miracles". I have such fond memories of those wonderful times. It seems that I am now of an age when all of my heroes are passing away. R.I.P. Larry, a big man in every sense.
  3. The Whitemoor pub has always been very pleasant, even when it changed its name briefly to the Snooty Fox. Everyone ignored that aberration and continued to call it the Whitemoor. Thinking back to Bobbers Mill I seem to remember that there was a footpath from Bobbers Mill which went by Linley and Linley and then by the side of the river Leen, past some pigeon lofts (back when pigeon racing was a big deal!) and finally emerging on Gauntly Street, Hyson Green. I wonder if the path is still there? Incidentallly when we were kids we used to call Linley and Linley the Big Kettle because there w
  4. I'm not sure Oz, but it was possibly a fear of flying.
  5. Stan Bowles was signed for Forest for £250,000 in 1979. He started well, scoring 2 goals in his first 3 games but didn't score any more after that. He played a total of 22 games in all competitions. According to Larry Lloyd Bowles refused to get on the plane for the European Cup Final against Hamburg which is why Forest only had 4 substitutes out of the 5 allowed. Stan therefore missed out on a cup winners medal and never played again for Forest. Cloughie sold him to Leyton Orient.
  6. This is a link to an Evening Post article about the statue which used to be at the Old General, Hyson Green. It's an interesting read if you can get past all the adverts! https://www.nottinghampost.com/whats-on/whats-on-news/nottingham-pubs-iconic-old-general-9082958
  7. There is a website devoted to the closed pubs of Nottingham if anyone is interested https://www.closedpubs.co.uk/nottinghamshire/nottingham.html
  8. I remember the Loggerheads as well! My brother used to live virtually opposite on Cliff Road and we spent many a happy hour there!
  9. Hello Mary, here is a picture of Loggerheads mentioned in your post about closed pubs. Also an old image of the Fox and Grapes, Sneinton aka Pretty Windows. This pub is still going. It was infamous for the murder of George Wilson, trainee landord, who had taken his dog out for a late night walk after closing the pub for the evening in September 1963. I believe that the crime was never solved.
  10. Here is a picture of the Shippos osses outside the Scotholme pub on the corner of Radford Road and Gladstone Street c.1968. https://postimg.cc/pyC3pcq8
  11. The County Tavern has a lovely frontage. What a shame that they changed the name to Cock and Hoop - awful name!
  12. I am enjoying the information about the Lace Market. I worked on High Pavement for 3 years back in the 1970s and used to enjoy wandering around in my lunch breaks looking at the architecture so it's great that Mitch Stevenson did so much to preserve the area. It was all built on sandstone and many of the buildings had extensive cellars cut into the rock, including the place where I worked. There was a bricked up tunnel in our cellar which the boss claimed led directly to the crypt at St. Mary's. We used to get a full hour back in those days and no-one ate at their desks! Drinking in the dinner
  13. I found this picture of Queen Victoria's statue when the goose fair was held in the Market Square. I think that the picture was taken before the start of the first world war. Notice how white the statue is, the only other pictures I have seen of it were completely black! That was obviously down to air pollution. I remember when they sand blasted the guildhall, I was totally amazed as I had only ever known it as a black stone building! https://postimg.cc/v475yKSs
  14. This is an article from the BBC website about cocks on sticks at the goose fair. I remember them well! My favourite fairground food was brandysnap. Of course there was always candyfloss and toffee apples but, it being Nottingham, there had to be mushy peas and mint sauce! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-67055819
