  1. Thanks for that Beefsteak. Much appreciated. rissy:)
  2. Does anyone know where the Liberal Club was? I have it listed as Wheeler Gate in 1912 (on marriage certificate of husband's granma and grandad). Can't seem to find any references to it anywhere. Any ideas? rissy
  3. I used to do my shopping in MacFisheries when I first married. It was definitely opposite the old market square tram stop where the Wetherspoons pub is now. After MacFish it was Halfords. I shopped there 'cos I worked above the Lloyds Bank and it was the nearest shop for me. There was another MacFish on Mapperley Top 'cos my mum used to go there. I think that's a travel agents now. Burton's - like someone said it was too posh for the likes of us. I used to go in when I was feeling flush and buy a posh loaf - I think they cost twice what they would anywhere else but you just felt so good
  4. Didn't live near there but I did find an interesting fact the other day about this area. Did you know that one of Nottingham's lost villages was somewhere near the junction of Eland Street and Radford Road? It was called Algarthorpe (no, I'd not heard of it either). Looksie at this chaps site - it's fascinating! http://www.diplomate.freeserve.co.uk/dmv.htm Rissy:)
  5. Used to go there lots in the 70's. Remember seeing Mudd there, also a group called Light Fantastic and lots more that I can't remember 'cos I was too drunk at the time. Me and my other half used to go across from Brinsley (where we lived at the time) in our little Riley Elf (Aubergine and Winter White, of course). This didn't stop us drinking 'cos the car knew it's way home! (Naughty, naughty!). Mind you by the time we'd danced the night away the booze had left our systems! Rissy:)
  6. Thanks for the welcome everyone! Looking forward to getting to "know" you all. Rissy:)
  7. Well, le'ts put it this way. I can remember Forest winning the F.A .Cup. I was 7 then so work it out! The bit of Church Street that I lived on was the bit that carried on to a sort of yard thingy. You went down three steps onto blue bricks; this was onto the back of the houses, just in front of the brick yard. The fronts (never used) looked out over Carlton Sqaure with quite long gardens there too, as I recall. Sorry don't know the name Paul Marshall - perhaps my brother would know him. He went to St Pauls school too. His name is Dennis Gee. We moved from Church Street when I was 4 s
  8. I am a Nottinghamian. I was born in Carlton(Church Street near St. Pauls), brought up there too (Calverton Avenue - pit house), then we went posh and went to Mapperley when Dad bought a house near The Belle Vue. I married and lived in various locations - always Nottinghamshire except for a 6 year period in the foreign land of Ilkeston! Now back in Notts. I just started looking at my family history. My folks are from Radford and Greasley and my old man's folks are from Bulwell and The Meadows. So you can see I really belong here. Looking forward to taking part in discussions etc. Rissy
