  1. I've enjoyed Nottstalgia from day one because of the good attitude folks seem to have towards each others feelings. With one recent notable exception, now thankfully, removed. For what its worth I think it is one of the best forums on the web. Most rules seem to be designed to be broken anyway. I think the general rule of "treat others as you would like to be treated" is as good a general rule as seems to be needed here. Dave

    FIRE!

Got a feeling that was Lawrences, Mick. Dave
  3. First computer was an Atari 520 ST back in about 1985. Upgraded to a mega four with 100 meg HD. Good machine but Atari never overcame its video game image and expired. Still have the mega four. Need to sell it one of these days or will it ever become a real collectors item?
  4. Saw Benny Hill one time as a kid in the fifties. He was down at the Ferry Boat inn at Stoke Bardolph after an evening performance at the "Empire" if I remember rightly.
  5. Now what did they have to go and do that for???? Another link with the past gone forever!
  6. Yeh the accent is definitely different down here. My problem is more with the extreme humidity of the summer months. I tell my wife its like the &^%@# Amazon down here. Even the natives complain about it at times so its not just me. I do not miss thirty below too much either. I think that its is just the Rockies and the shear beauty of the Alberta area that I miss. Lot of memories there. I suppose I had expected to retire in Alberta. I am not complaining I made my own choice to move. Really comes back to the whole issue discussed in this thread how we view our former haunts. I'
  7. Point taken about having to move because of job situation. That would be a difficult choice to make if you are happy and settled. Just finished watching Saturday Night and Sunday Morning on Turner Classic. Don't mean to start a discussion on that here I know it has been addressed on other threads. It sure was interesting to see some of the shots of Derby Road, the Castle etc. All those steam trains and smoke. Things have changed! I suppose we adjust eventually. When I first moved to Edmonton from Calgary I went back to Calgary every chance I could get. Eventually the new area grew on
  8. At least you've still got some, Beefy! Here in the Deep South they all seem to have gone South. Just a few old crows around. We used to have a great dawn chorus, now silence. Maybe they joined the bees? Didn't they used to take a Canary down a mine? When he croaked, watch out! Humans were probably next. Hmmmmm! Dave
  9. You put your finger on it, Mick. Maybe the issue really has nothing to do with distance, but rather to change and our growing resistance to it as we age. Perhaps we also tend to think of things in the past as being far better than they really were. After all, we can't have been that happy or we wouldn't have moved. Dave
  10. Difficult to respond in some ways as I have no desire to come across as critical of Nottingham. After all I spent the first 25 years of my life in and around it. Got married there. Had our first child there. Enjoyed working there for the EMEB as it was then. Don't know what they call it now. I think someone once said, "You can never go back." I think what they meant was, it will never be the same. We left for Canada in 1970. We loved it there in both Toronto and Calgary and Edmonton Alberta. We both went back numerous times but it was never the same. Good to see family and friends b
  11. A look through my life would be pretty boring to most, I think. So I'm not too bothered about what they know or don't know. The concern can often be around hacking. We have had numerous cases here of credit card, social insurance #s etc. being compromised. If nothing else this can put you through a lot of aggravation trying to get things sorted out. Wonder if the next thing from Google will be implantable microchips to solve the above problems. It will be a cold day in he** before they ever get one into me. I won't even have one put in my dog! Dave
  12. In our local rag a few days ago was a cartoon with a guy sitting at his computer with a picture of google up on his google browser. A head poked out of the screen looking into his brain. (hard to visualize I know) Anyway the caption read, "Are you reading google or is google reading you?" Google have produced some great stuff. I really enjoy their picassa program for all my photos. However when I read about how much info they keep about our online activities I sometimes wonder if its worth it. Dave
  13. Who said it needed fuses? I'm with you on this too Beefy. I'm no physicist, but I fail to see what useful purpose it will serve. Dave
  14. I mentioned this on the mobile phone thread bu thought I should start a new thread. http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2008/09...lhc-safety.html So, what's the thinking on this one? Will we disappear down a black hole of our own making soon? What about the ethics of conducting experiments which carry such risks? Even though "Experts" say they don't Someone once described an expert as follows. "An Ex is a has-been, and a spurt is a drip under pressure." What about spending m $4 + BILLION on such an experiment? What do ya'll think? Dave
  15. You have all mostly covered this. I came in late. I avoid putting the phone to my ear. Use speakerphone. Also avoid use of Bluetooth headsets. They do not protect you from RF as they too use RF between the phone and the headset. I worked in the cellphone industry for four years. Don't expect to hear anything from the carriers about this problem. Never heard it discussed while I was in the industry but I often wondered about it. Used them a lot during that period. Maybe that's why I can't remember where I put anything now !faint! I expect to see many more brain tumors in the coming
  16. I think you are probably right about Rutherfords and the video recorder. Pretty sure I heard at the time that they had a shop or lab' over in East Bridgeford somewhere which was where they worked on the video recorder. They also had a record store on the main street in Netherfield late 50s early 60s. Spent a lot of time in there. Chrissy. Often wondered what happened to Christine. Last time I ever saw her was at the bus stop in Netherfield early 60s. She was a good looking gal by then. Much better than I remember her when I sat next to her in school. Funny how we change. Dave
  17. We had a Christine Savage in Ashwell street junior school. I sat next to her in class for a while. Don't know if she would still be in Netherfield. If so she would be 62/63 now. Dave
  18. So where do they send the 11-15 year old boys now? In my day we were separated by the 11+ The wiseguys went to Carlton Le Willows and the rest of us to Chandos and the girls to Station Road. We used to say they should have a sign above the door. "Abandon hope all ye who enter here." Best you could hope to be was a plumber, electrician, or auto mechanic. Interesting days. Dave
  19. Can't argue with that one Beefy. But my vegetable patch is usually fairly safe. The little green lizards eat the so and so's. There are also some natural repellents available and didn't I read somewhere that if you eat citrus fruit it keep the little suckers away? Some people seem to attract them as well. I could sit out on the deck with my late wife and the only mosquito in 300 sq miles would find her. Dave
  20. I'm with you Eyup. I work in my yard all the time. Wear a hat and don't overdo it but I will never use the junk that's in those tubes. We need vitamin D and sun exposure is a good way to get it. I stay away from all of the bug repellents etc. too. Rather risk a few bites than absorb that stuff through my skin. There are enough toxic additives in our food without adding more on our skin. Now I'm reading that the powers that be are going to start irradiating produce to "protect" us from harmful pathogens. If it kills the bugs what does it do to our food? Gets more scary every day!!!!!
