  1. That should have read, the site was sold to the then GPO in 1964. Old Jacky had been long gone by then.
  2. The Jacky Pownall who had the scrap yard in Sneinton was my great Grandfather, he sol the site to the post office in 1964.
  3. Yes it was apparently bought by the Post Office but even in the late 50's and early 60;s they always used it at Christmas. I too remember the Xmas dinners there although I left there in 1965.
  4. Hi I'm new, I born and lived in Nottingham till I was 23, many moons ago, my Dad was caretaker at the Drill Hall on Derby Road, maybe some people will remember it.
  5. Deepest sympathy to Ann's family and friends. May she rest in peace.
  6. I was born and bred in Nottingham and know the saying well, but my husband who was born in the Black Country has never heard it before. Here in Lincolnshire they don't know it either, I always understood it to be a Nottingham saying.
  7. I moved from William Crane to Forest Fields when it first opened, we were the first pupils there, even where it was then was a bad enough journey from Broxtowe, bus and then a long walk.
  8. When I left school in 1959 I went to work at COD Chilwell, as a clerk and it was indeed far bigger than it is today. I married a soldier from there and we moved into married quarters on camp. The Cadland and the Charlton were the only places most people from the camp went in those days, if we got thrown out of one we would go across the road to the other. My second son who was born there, joined the army and his last tour after 20 years was Chilwell and he and his family moved into quarters on the same road we had lived when he was born. He is out of the Army now but is what is known as Non Re
  9. No, I never went to Boogie street, but my husband did before I joined him out there. We were there from 1966 to 1968 and it was wonderful, everything there was geared up for the British services. Will never be the same again.
  10. No, Army, 3 BOD, great place then had a really good time out there.
  11. Hi Rob, We too were in the Player catchment area and most of the kids on the road went there, but like your Mum ours decided the Crane was better plus our grandparents lived on Minver crescent opposite the boys senior entrance. Marge
  12. We left Broxtowe in 1957 and you are obviously much younger than me, when you left school I was married with 2 kids and living in Singapore. Hi Kath, My brother's name is Barry Pownall, it is possible that he knew your brother while they were at school Marge
  13. My brother started work at the Aspley cinema in 1954 when he left school. He went to the Crane School, as did we both, we lived on Withern Road in Broxtowe, quite nice then but a right tip I believe now.
  14. We live not far from Conningsby, where the Battle of Britain flight is stationed and see the whole flight quite often in the summer going out or in from air shows.
  15. Hi Robt, I don't know an awful lot about the Vulcan I must admit but I do remember it flying before it went into service, many moons ago now. I know that she only ever flew in anger during the Falklands war. One of my sons was in the army and was posted there just after it had finished, he wasn't old enough to go while it was on. Another one of my sons is a civilian officer at Waddington so we do get to know a little bit of what is happening there, not a lot though or he says he will have to shoot us ha ha !
