  1. Rode up it a couple of times in my youth on club runs, on a touring bike with low gears (thankfully!), but attended quite a few hill climb events where riders used fixed wheel bikes with just a front brake. Wouldn’t fancy descending on one of those.
  2. And getting told off by a patient for not paying NHS staff enough. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-politics-63429726
  3. When they invaded Ukraine, there were reports of Russian soldiers stealing toilets and washing machines - even though many of them wouldn’t have had indoor plumbing back home.
  4. @Jill SparrowGarat’s Hay has its own web site. https://garatshay.org.uk/garats-hay-today/
  5. He might have been better off reading the instructions and dissolving the powder in water.
  6. Watched it on BT Sport in glorious 4K. Can but hope that the team is coming together and can move up the table. It’s good to see the City Ground bogey is still there for Liverpool in the league. And even if Johnson had put that ball in the net, it would have been ruled out for offside.
  7. And that’s why every car should have a dashcam as standard.
  8. Amazing how easily people ignore the repeated affairs, including the one with the American he paid £100k of London taxpayers money for “technology lessons” and the one with his now wife when his then wife had cancer, and the one with a Russian violinist who may have been working for their government, the love children, the lying to parliament, the rule breaking, the turning a blind eye to sexual misconduct, the terrible decisions that led to 1000s of excess COVID deaths...
  9. Back to the milkman. Our local milk delivery person’s van has the noisiest Diesel engine around, and what appear to be floodlights on the sides of the van, which are bright enough to trigger our video doorbell when he drives past. That wouldn’t be a problem if he didn’t do his deliveries at 3am.
  10. The wife and I were debating whether to get an air fryer. My preference is to wait a few weeks until the “only used once” ones start to swamp for sale pages at half retail price or cheaper.
  11. The Hofmeister that used to be sold in the UK wasn’t a proper lager. It was made by Scottish & Newcastle and was barely alcoholic (3.2%). Since 2016, it’s been brewed in Germany according to the Reinheitsgebot purity law, and is a reasonable 5%.
  12. Unfortunately, those local breweries got bought by bigger brewers, such as Scottish & Newcastle and Greenalls, who closed down local production. In turn, they got bought by even bigger companies like Heineken and Interbrew, which was then acquired by Anheuser-Busch. If you want local beers, there are now plenty of micro breweries, like Blue Monkey, Castle Rock, Navigation, and Magpie amongst others. And one has even brought Shippos back.
  13. Always worth hanging onto evidence of what vehicle categories you’re entitled to drive, including keeping the original when renewing. I’ve heard reports over the years of people suddenly finding that their licence doesn’t include, for example, riding large capacity motorcycles, or towing trailers/caravans, and even lorry drivers losing LGV categories. When this has happened, DVLA demand proof of entitlement, rather than accepting that they have made mistakes.
  14. Both Cisco and Gaffa had regular gigs at the Imperial on St James Street throughout the 70s, as well as other venues, such as the Boat Club. While Cisco are no longer around, Gaffa have reformed and have been playing locally - most recently at the Lincolnshire Poacher.
  15. And in other local good news, Basford United of the Southern League progressed to the next round of the FA Cup for the first time ever by beating National League North’s Boston United on penalties. Next up, Solihull Moors of the National League.
  16. On another note, the Yorkshire-based makers of “Vale of Mowbray” pork pies is being wound-up. Sold primarily in supermarkets as a budget brand. Never liked their pies. Rock-hard pastry, no jelly, and pink sludge filling. https://www.just-food.com/news/uk-pork-pie-firm-vale-of-mowbray-enters-administration/
  17. Richard Todd was a really nice bloke in real life, too. My wife’s uncle, Tadeusz Szuwalski, was one of the RAF pilots who flew the aircraft for the Dambusters film and they remained life-long friends.
  18. I’m pretty sure that in the mid-70s, the Salutation was a Whitbread pub.
  19. One thing I learned. It must be fun being an anaesthetist. You only have to remember the start of a story and not bother with the ending.
  20. A day for me to smile. Had my cancerous prostate removed yesterday and being allowed home today. From beginning to end the journey was painless. Yes, I’ll have to carry a catheter for a few days, and may have some Incontinence for a while, but at least I’m cancer-free!
  21. And the winners of the special award for being constantly on the BBC coverage and saying absolutely nothing of any interest are Nicholas Witchell and Gyles Brandreth.
  22. There’s also a slight lag between SD and HD, and between them and 4K. Which can be a pain when the wife turns the kitchen TV up to 11 and drowns out the sound on our other TV. For some reason, she always seems to put the SD broadcast on, even when HD is available.
  23. A relative of my first wife decided to become vegetarian and declared that he would only eat egg and chips, because he didn’t like salad or any kind of green food. His local chippy in Wigan always cooked their chips in best dripping, and nobody had the heart to tell him the awful truth. Mind you, one result of his “diet” was that it caused him to suffer awful haemorrhoids.
