  1. Going back a bit now as I lived in the area 1975-1986.I remember there was an awful chippy along Maid Marian Way called The Chippery. The City of Nottingham buses for Wollaton and Balloon Woods used to stop outside.
  2. I know it's not Nottingham but it was popular with Nottingham area residents as it was on the Fosseway roughly half way between Nottingham and Leicester.Did any of you used to go ? It was in the late 70's/early 80's that I used to go with a mate of mine.In my opinion it "peaked" in the late 70's and by the early 80's deteriorated.I remember they had a resident band called Brandy who were really good. The in the other room they had a disco.I saw some famous people in there too.The actor Bill Maynard was in one night.I also saw ex-Blue Peter presenters Peter Duncan and Simon Groome.Others I saw i
  3. Yeah,Zab,the Crystal Palace,Clumber Street. It closed down during my Nottingham days - 1975-1986.I recall the people who ran it were Derek (?) and Mary (?).Became a shop after it closed.Somebody on here told me it is now a amusement arcade. When it was a pub they used to have a guy on a honky-tonk piano. The building has magnificent large rounded windows either side of the door. They were protected/listed or whatever,so at least they can't screw that up.
  4. Yeah,Firbeck at one time I would go in the FH but only following my mates. It was a Berni Inn wasn't it ? Maybe that had something to do with the reason it closed ? All keg beer as I recall so I don't think any self-respecting member of CAMRA would be seen in there. It became part of a shopping centre didn't it ?
  5. Definitely The Exchange,Beefy. It was a Shippos pub in the tied houses era.Yeah, prostitutes used to hang around outside and approach any bloke who walked past.
  6. ick ?I recall it had quite an impressive interior but it was all keg beer wasn't it,Mick ?
  7. Yeah Stu,I have fond memories of that place too.My Nottingham days were 1975-1986 so it would have been late 70's/early 80's I went in there most - Friday and smetimes Saturday evenings with mates and occasionally in the week with a girlfriend. The people who ran the pub were Hilary & Adrian.Hilary was a no-nonsense type - she was in charge and you better believe it.Always found Adrian to be a bit on the disagreeable side.At Xmas they used to decorate the interior very impressively with green and silver paper.
  8. During my Nottingham Days (1975 - 1986 ) I used to work with a girl who said master rose-grower Harry Wheatcroft smelt of manure. Can anybody confirm ?!
  9. I think it was on here that I read that the Broad Marsh Centre was being rebuilt. Can anybody enlighten me on this ? Do the work relate to a major re-furbishment and/or extension and has work started ? Thanks.
  10. Were the bedrooms ensuite ? (ha,ha)
  11. Charlie,are you sure the chicken wasn't plastic too ? (ha,ha)
  12. Amazing isn't it, Duck-a-l'Orange which turned out to be boil in a bag stuff.Reminds me of The Malthouse. We had a Christmas Do there during my Nottingham Days (1975-1986).Part of the Xmas Dinner was mashed potato. It turned out to be Cadburys Smash. This was evident because of the powder on our plates because they hadn't mixed it properly !
  13. Unbelievable wasn't it ?! Fried egg OR pineapple.Wonder what the reaction would have been if you had asked for both ? Rather like hotels who offered grapefruit segments OR cornflakes.Very much a take it or leave it attitude in those days. They hadn't cottoned on to the fact that you have to make available what customers want not just what they want to serve you.
  14. Flippin' 'eck, Beefy, how enterprising you are ! Bet your good at all that recycling stuff too !
  15. I think Del Boy would agree with you there.Remember the hilarious Only Fools And Horses sketch when he took a posh girl out for a meal? She was dressed elegantly with her blonde hair tied up and long dress, while he wore a tuxedo, white shirt and dickie-bow - not normally the attire for dining at a Berni Inn !
  16. Sounds like a reasonable theory,Limey.
  17. Thanks for the info,Stu.I remember watching a dramatisation on Harold Larwood probably in the late 80's/early 90's featuring,of course, the " Bodyline " tour under captain Douglas Jardine. The book on cricket legend Gary Sobers should be a good read.As you say nobody is better placed than Duncan to write about Cloughie. So that's 3 of Duncan's books on my " wanted " list ! Regards, Russ
  18. Hi Beefy,Sorry ,forgot to mention the title - " Provided You Don't Kiss Me." We are of course talking about the same book.Enjoy the read !
  19. Anybody read his award-winning book ? Not read it myself but understand it is an excellent read.I remember Duncan during my Nottingham days (1975-1986) when he worked for the Nottingham Evening Post.He was a customer of ours and also I recall talking to him in the pub one Friday night.Nice guy.I understand he now works for the Yorkshire Post and even has an entry on Wikipedia.Good luck to him.
  20. Hi Rob, I remember The Chateau.I went to a Christmas Do there in 1975.My Nottingham days were 1975-1986.Wasn't The Flying Horse one ? There was one on the right approachng the entrance to the Broadmarsh Centre too - cannot remember it's name.
  21. Hi Stu, I remember both of these pubs from my Nottingham days (1975-1986).The Corner Pin was a Home Ales pub during the tied-houses era.I never ever went in.The Crystal Palace I remember well - a Shippos pub and they used to have a guy on a honky-tonk piano.I think the couple who ran it were Derek and Mary.I was in there one Friday night and was chatting to Spyke Golding of CAMRA fame.He drank out of this huge glass - not sure how many pints it held.I suppose I could email Spyke at Nottingham CAMRA to ask him. When the pub closed it became a shop but the distinctive windows were protected.Someb
  22. Just hope they don't ruin it. I deplore " Americanised " versions of very British things such as dramatisations of Dickensian novels and so on.
  23. Sorry to hear about Ann.I never got to meet her but she sounds like a really nice person.I am not a Nottinghamian but have been overwhelmed by the warmth and friendship that has been shown to me on here, just like during my Nottingham Days (1975-1986).People like Ann will be sorely missed.Deepest sympathies to her family and friends.
