  1. But there must be a point in time, difficult to define exactly when, but a time when the ‘new’ use of a word becomes its commonly accepted meaning. Try saying to anyone under 30 that you had a gay old time and see what reaction you get. With using the term woke or wokery, people know what you mean or are getting at. You may dislike it or feel it’s wrong, which arguably it may well be but it’s out there and unstoppable. Have we not reached the time when woke has reached the status of queer and gay. With due respect to Col and anyone else, correcting folks on a forum such as this won’t make a jo
  2. Peveril was a bilateral school in the 60’s and 70’s for sure. Also the term ‘Technical grammar’ was used. The brighter kids, presumably identified from 11+ results went into ‘T’ classes (T1, T2 etc). I’m sure there were other bilateral schools.
  3. I think you’ve lost the battle on this issue Col. Radio 4 using the term wokery this morning. Give up. It’s in the wild. 2007? I won’t Labour or argue on this matter as it is of little relevance but come on, too far back to make a judgement on their current stance.
  4. You’ve been spoiled by your posher cars. If it keeps the wind and rain off, what more do you need. Bet little M gets more attention than your other car(s).
  5. Insure the Morris 8 Lizzie. Bet you’d get change from a hundred or so. Free Road tax and no mot required.
  6. I don’t read the Guardian but a little internet research indicates it has a centre left stance so would suit you. It would not appear to have the internationally acknowledged neutral stance you claim.
  7. Apparently it is, both in printed form and pdf. I honestly meant to put the Morning Star in the above comment but wrote socialist worker for some reason.
  8. Well they do. Otherwise known as haven’t a clue. I won’t attempt to defend the current governments record on borrowing but you don’t mention covid which has been, to put it mildly, a huge fly in the ointment and unprecedented in recent history. You have to at least acknowledge that. Brew mentions this above. I constantly hear and read plenty of criticism and alarm at the current government in general, the levels of borrowing, debt and policies. You can’t miss it. How come you don’t. You must be reading the Tory bias press. I am surprised. I thought you’d more likel
  9. We’ll surely that’s the cue to say how they’re going to pay. Alleged?
  10. Of course there is an element of society that are racist, xenophobic or both and I won’t disagree that immigrants played a part in Brexit. However I will still maintain that the majority do not have a dislike of ‘foreigners’ per se but of individuals, mainly young men entering the country illegally without knowing their background or agenda especially as they are crossing from ‘safe’ France. I don’t think there would be too many objections to taking our fair share of migrants from Europe. Tory voters are disillusioned with the current shower but are equally unimpressed with Labour who don
  11. I can only repeat my previous comment. Is concern over illegal immigration evidence of xenophobia? Because people aren’t happy at the many millions being spent on housing people invading this country, claiming asylum having fled ‘war torn France’ throwing away their passports and converting to Christianity, then they must be racist and or xenophobic. Really. Confusing common sense and genuine concern for xenophobia I think.
  12. You offer an apology (we’ll almost) to your comment of racism but then accuse them of xenophobia. I think concern of the current scale of illegal immigration and patriotism hardly condemns them as xenophobic.
  13. No and that doesn’t answer my question and don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan.
  14. My fathers car when I was very young was a Morris 8. I still remember it with great affection and recall trips with my late sister in that car. I’ve toyed with the idea of getting one but I haven’t the health to restore one so it would have to be one that just needed routine maintenance. He traded that for a Morris Minor and indeed my first car was a moggy but they don’t appeal nearly as much as the Morris 8.
  15. We go to West Bridgford quite often and quite like it. Some nice places to eat, a lovely little park and some public toilets. Other observations are if you stand still for more than 30 seconds you might get a parking ticket slapped on you. I’ve never known such keen parking wardens who seem to materialise the instant you stop and secondly people are obviously too posh to clean up after their dogs. Mind you they are in Southwell too.
  16. I was chatting to a friend the other day and this topic came up. A few years ago we visited Victoria on Vancouver Island. My wife was with her dad so I left them to spend time together and I wandered off through the local China town and way out off the beaten track. I window shopped and went into one of those arty type shops selling dream catchers and all manner of ‘new age, hippy’ type stuff. One of the assistants asked what I was looking for and she recognised my English accent. She too was English although she had picked up the local accent. To cut a long story short she mentioned she’
  17. Ian Lavender aka ‘don’t tell him pike’ has passed away aged 77. He was the last surviving member of the cast of Dads Army, the classic comedy.
  18. No credit due to me Beekay. I merely posted it. CT found it and Jill sent it to me. It’s just a convenient system we have evolved for getting images on here.
  19. That’s you off Jill’s Christmas card list Beekay.
  20. A very early Berridge photo, 1916 no less. Jill will comment. The quality is outstanding. One girl on the right of the image didn’t keep still enough and is a little blurred due to the slow shutter speed which was needed with the early film.
  21. Listing the first of 2 Berridge class photos for Jill who will give the details she has ascertained.
  22. So it’s not just me then. Not sure why but I can’t abide Chris Packham. Turn him off if I happen across him. I know he got some criticism for revealing he stole birds eggs in his youth.
  23. I mentioned recently when the topic was pubs closing down, that the Bramley Apple in Southwell was currently shut but I didn’t know if it was for a refurb or closed down. Apparently it is to become an Indian restaurant. We’ve only got 2 at the moment so a third is desperately needed! https://www.facebook.com/groups/169761907547135/permalink/1058654468657870/
