  1. No and that doesn’t answer my question and don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan.
  2. My fathers car when I was very young was a Morris 8. I still remember it with great affection and recall trips with my late sister in that car. I’ve toyed with the idea of getting one but I haven’t the health to restore one so it would have to be one that just needed routine maintenance. He traded that for a Morris Minor and indeed my first car was a moggy but they don’t appeal nearly as much as the Morris 8.
  3. We go to West Bridgford quite often and quite like it. Some nice places to eat, a lovely little park and some public toilets. Other observations are if you stand still for more than 30 seconds you might get a parking ticket slapped on you. I’ve never known such keen parking wardens who seem to materialise the instant you stop and secondly people are obviously too posh to clean up after their dogs. Mind you they are in Southwell too.
  4. I was chatting to a friend the other day and this topic came up. A few years ago we visited Victoria on Vancouver Island. My wife was with her dad so I left them to spend time together and I wandered off through the local China town and way out off the beaten track. I window shopped and went into one of those arty type shops selling dream catchers and all manner of ‘new age, hippy’ type stuff. One of the assistants asked what I was looking for and she recognised my English accent. She too was English although she had picked up the local accent. To cut a long story short she mentioned she’
  5. Ian Lavender aka ‘don’t tell him pike’ has passed away aged 77. He was the last surviving member of the cast of Dads Army, the classic comedy.
  6. No credit due to me Beekay. I merely posted it. CT found it and Jill sent it to me. It’s just a convenient system we have evolved for getting images on here.
  7. That’s you off Jill’s Christmas card list Beekay.
  8. A very early Berridge photo, 1916 no less. Jill will comment. The quality is outstanding. One girl on the right of the image didn’t keep still enough and is a little blurred due to the slow shutter speed which was needed with the early film.
  9. Listing the first of 2 Berridge class photos for Jill who will give the details she has ascertained.
  10. So it’s not just me then. Not sure why but I can’t abide Chris Packham. Turn him off if I happen across him. I know he got some criticism for revealing he stole birds eggs in his youth.
  11. I mentioned recently when the topic was pubs closing down, that the Bramley Apple in Southwell was currently shut but I didn’t know if it was for a refurb or closed down. Apparently it is to become an Indian restaurant. We’ve only got 2 at the moment so a third is desperately needed! https://www.facebook.com/groups/169761907547135/permalink/1058654468657870/
  12. I’ve not commented on this until now as it’s of little interest to anyone here but Brews recent comments prompt me to mention my recent experience. I see a specialist at the QMC for 6 monthly checks for a long term condition. I saw him about 5 months ago which resulted in a referral to a surgeon. That came through in mid November and I had surgery last week. Cannot complain about any aspect of my stay, treatment and the time line. The food was, well I’ll just say adequate but generally my overall experience was all good. I was surprised at the amount of paper work that seems necessary to ev
  13. I’ve sent you a pm Beekay.
  14. I was born in the heart of Radford in the mid 50’s. I was not really aware of what was happening in my area until perhaps the early 60’s. We had an outside lavatory but it was not a deprived area at all. Walking down the street to school the noise of galvanised buckets and seeing women scrubbing their front steps was a daily occurrence. The houses were immaculate and generally well cared for. We moved away in 1971 but I was back in the general area within a year and eventually bought a nice house in 1982 not far from my childhood home but on a cul de sac and with semi and detached property, wh
  15. It’s perhaps unfair to characterise a city due to some poorer areas. Most major cities have some undesirable crime ridden areas but some better areas. Some more than others. My work used to take me all over the country and usually to the worst areas. Without any hesitation the worst place I visited was Miles Plattin in Manchester. Horrendous. I have no idea what wider Manchester is like.
  16. Saddened to hear Raleigh are closing their site at Eastwood. No manufacturing there and mainly used for the assembly of bikes made in the far east and warehousing but it marks the end of well over 100 years of Raleigh’s presence in the city. Major employers over the years with as many as 8000 local workers in their heyday and known throughout the world. My first job was in the design office where I spent 3 1/2 wonderful years working with some lovely people. The parent company say they are relocating but will retain an office in the city.
  17. Went over Gunthorpe bridge yesterday. Traffic lights as one lane is closed where they’re pumping out some flooded houses. Long queues but Kelham is closed so it’s back to Trent bridge to avoid Gunthorpe.
  18. John Lewis, once the bench mark for customer service. Sadly no more. Impossible to speak to a specific shop, just the central ‘overseas’ call centre. Unhelpful and frankly hopeless customer service. You can’t complain easily, only by email with a case number which you aren’t given. Frustrating few hours going around in circles the last few days.
  19. The Bramley Apple pub in Southwell has recently closed. I don’t know if it’s closed down or closed for a refurb. I think I’ve only been in twice, once many years ago and about 10 years ago
  20. Lower image taken 11am today. The Trent has risen considerably since my previous image the other day. The Bromley Arms now has a ‘sea’ view. Could do without it rising any more. The landing stage has floats so rises with the river. 2 of the 3 roads I can leave the village are now flooded and impassable.
  21. Re the Bromley Arms. It did close and then reopened. I went and they struggled to find a glass believe it or not. The barman didn’t have a clue charged me wrong and it was pretty awful. It is still open as far as I know but I haven’t been in again. Lights were on the other day.
  22. The Full Moon is a restaurant rather than a traditional pub. Food is very good and not over expensive and they must be doing something right as it seems very busy much of the time. Villagers seem to traditionally gather there on Thursday evenings and always have in the 23 years I’ve been living here but I don’t join in nor rarely go in at all. Nothing wrong with it but if I’m just having a drink you’re surrounded by people eating which I don’t like. I’m not a big drinker at all these days and we prefer to go to the Final Whistle on Station Road Southwell once or maybe twice a week which is a d
  23. Trent at Fiskerton earlier today. It’s been just over the picnic benches in the past.
