  1. Definitely mentioned Players on the news I saw. I wasn't paying attention but when they mentioned Players I looked up. I'm actually quite impressed with Players as I worked there for 18 months 1973-4 and they recently traced me via an agency to my current address as apparently I'm due some pension contributions back. I started browsing new cars until they told me it will be about £98.00. It's the thought that counts but the cash would be better.
  2. I think the someone else would sue your dad who would sue his dad who could sue Players. I guess you might need a good medium as in spiritualist though.
  3. In the early 70's I worked at Players for about 18 months. I caught on the news today, the tail end of a piece that someone or a group of people are suing players for the health implications of the free cigs that employees got given as a perk. I think I got 200 a week. Anyone else here worked at Players?
  4. Super Notts up 1-0. Keep it up Notts. 30 mins left.
  5. I agree with much of what you say here or at least understand and respect your opinion with exception to the final paragraph in that the referendum was a vote that could and should have been honoured. That is what was promised and failing to deliver on that promise is a scandal. It's a complete utter disgrace. I really don't know how they've got away with it so far. It is a breach of our democracy. I will close on this and make no further comment. I'm in town and it's cold, windy and pouring down.
  6. Certainly there was a proportion that voted out for this reason. This being seen as racist has been jumped on and highlighted and used to justify an out vote as being just wrong and has probably promoted the racist leaver to a status not warranted. I believe that the proportion that did vote for this reason was relatively small and many people wanted to leave for perfectly 'honourable' reasons.
  7. I've just looked at the forum rules. I was of the opinion that political discussion was outlawed here yet didn't see anything in the rules to confirm this. Not having a go at anyone. Just asking. People have strongly held views and conflict will without doubt ensue. The referendum was ill thought out and the campaigns on both sides very poor. Clearly the result they got was not the one they expected or wanted and had no plans for a Brexit. There lies the problem. Like it or not the public were told that out means out. No customs union etc. I can't recall being told of leaving with 'a
  8. If anyone does visit Newark the Prince Rupurt which I'd quite close to the market place does very good food. Pizzas are very good but it's not cheap.
  9. Thanks Rog. I have been in the museum and ballroom. Not the offices though. Some nice paintings. I'm aware of the thin house but nothing about it. Is it inhabited I wonder. I'd imagine it's not incredibly small but the position sandwiched where it is and height may add to the illusion.
  10. I've been visiting Newark for about 40 years. When I lived in Nottingham I'd cycle there occasionally and several times a month go with Lady Jane on the motor cycle. I worked shifts so it was a nice run out and not too far. I live about 7 miles from there now so we're regular visitors as it's the main town for us. We moved out to a village very near to Southwell 19 years ago which is a lovely place but like Phil find there's not a great deal there. I love Newark. It is in my opinion a gem certainly in the East Midlands if not further afield. There is a traveller community down Tolney Lane
  11. I think he may have meant only one side of the step has been worn down so the left hand door is mainly shut.
  12. My wedding photo was taken on those steps of the West Door of St Peters, 44 soon to be 45 years ago. Notice on Jill's photo, how thousands of feet over the years have worn a hollow in the step.
  13. Lovely visit to Berridge yesterday and nice to put faces to names. Planning a few things I could talk to the children about and sort out my school photos it made me realise that it was 59 years since I first stepped through that gate. I can hardly believe it. Happy days at Berridge in comparison to the school that followed, Forest Fields Grammar that I grew to loath. Not entirely the schools fault, I will shoulder some of the responsibility but safe to say I hated it. Don't get me wrong, as for Berridge I was glad when it was weekends and holidays but looked forward to school immensely. T
  14. You're quite right Jill. It is indeed a church. I'm not sure of the exact title but something like the 'kingdom of the 7th day evangelists' and very well attended by the West Indian community. Prior to that it was a Bingo Hall. I looked in the fire door which was open a while back and a very helpful woman let me look around. Still very cinema ish.
  15. The plaque is indeed on Habitat's wall and you're correct the brickwork does look more recent. The plaque seems to have a harvest/food theme. Maybe it had to be retained as a planning requirement but where was it originally. It seems odd it's hidden away without access. Stuart.C. When I click your link I get a message that the page isn't currently available for public viewing so I cannot comment on it but if you look at the old map Cliff Ton kindly and helpfull posted (#3) Hurts yard is still there albeit somewhat changed and has nothing to do with Woodland Place. I'll get a new map and l
  16. I'm not sure that the alley I found is where Woodland Place was. I'll have a better look when I can. It seems to go to the rear of the car park which is on Parliament Street now. I assume the Talbot on the map is now Yates.
  17. It was Trogg who posted the photo for me. I got mixed up. Thanks for the offer. I thought mick was Rog. It's my age. Sorry guys.
  18. My grandfather was born in 1888 in Woodland Place, an alley that ran from long row through to Parliament Street about half way between Market Street and Hurts Yard. On Saturday I was in town and between the British Heart Foundation shop and the old Habitat store there is an alley which may be about where Woodland Place was. You can only get up it a short way as there is a steel barred gate across but I notice just the other side of the gate to the left, inset in the wall is this plaque. It is as far as I can tell cast iron or some sort of metal casting and is really lovely. Shame that it's hid
  19. Thanks Rog. I'll email it in the morning. It's on my phone which is not to hand.
  20. I took a picture yesterday I would like to share on this forum. I don't use and have no desire to join a photo hosting site. Is there anyone I could email it to who could then link to it on here please. Thanks.
  21. One of those postcards above depicts the medieval cloth hall in Ypres. It was blown to bits and all but destroyed. I've visited Ypres a few times and the hall was rebuilt after the war in excatly the state it had been. It's beautiful and you would never know it had received a scratch. Now partly a museum with many artefacts of the war. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ypres_Cloth_Hall
  22. Sorry Rog. I don't. As I recall it was the last place on the right or about the last going down Hockley. Towards the back of the premises it was obviously really old and hadn't been touched a deal by the look of it. I spoke to a member of staff or maybe he was the owner and that's what he told me.
  23. I had to visit Gillotts in the 80's with work and parts of it dated way way back. I was told that it was used as a safe house for highwaymen.
  24. Yesterday marked exactly 101 years (21.3.1918) since since Germany launched what became known as their spring offensive in France. Their attack was initially very successful and they gained much ground but for tactical and practical reasons it proved to be the beginning of the end for Germany capitulated within months. Many thousands were killed that bloody day in a bloody war. Poinient for me as my paternal Grandfather was killed having the misfortune to be at the front where the attack was particularly severe. His battalion was literally wiped out. He has no known grave. His letters home are
  25. Only just spotted this Jill. I was at Forest Fields GS with Dave Juggins although I cannot recall him being at Berridge. I've bumped into him a few times over the years but haven't seen him now for 20 years or so. He's still around, in fact I exchanged messages with his wife on a FFGS Facebook group a couple of months ago.
