  1. I heard some gossip in our village pub tuther day. I went home and told the missis. I said "you know that fella who lives at the end cottage towards Bleasby. Well they recon he's made love to all women in village bar one". My wife said, I wonder who that is then.
  2. I would imagine that the idea is to agitate the water to wash the clothes. The dolly peg obviously through trial and error over years was found to be efficient at this so the electric washers just 'electrified' best practice. The current washer spins at 1200. It's been doing that for several years with no problem. If it engineered properly to spin at 1200 I don't see why you shouldn't.
  3. So very sorry to hear this sad news Nick. Gordon was a grand fellow. A one off and I'm privileged to have known him. My condolences to you and your family.
  4. The Nix family were from Hazelwood Road, Hyson Green. Bernard and Alice Nix of Grimston Road were my wife's great uncle and aunt, Bernard being the brother of Alf Nix her grandfather. Bernard worked at Players all his life and had no connection or relation to the hardware shop. Bernard's dad, also an Alf was a full time soldier and one of the first over to France and took part in the retreat from Mons. He wrote a long and moving account of this which I have a copy of. No connection we know of to the Nix builders at Oxton Phil mentions. Re Nix. Last name: Nix SDB Popularity ran
  5. There were quite a few children on Grimston Road. Ian Munroe as Jill recalls. Opposite Ian was Ann Archer who was in my class at Berridge. James Horrocks at 47 so very near your Grandparents CT but he came mid 60's. Roy and Sue Savage and Malcolm and Catherine Nix. If you go to the next road up, Wordsworth numerous Berridge children. Kevin Hallam, Martin and Jane Jewers, Mick and janet Jackson and the Broomhead boys. Glentworth Road has to have an honourable mention as my wife Jane and her siblings Karen, David, Sue and Joanne all went to Berridge.
  6. Thanks for posting Jill. I have very few photos of my sister around this age so this is a delight to see. I dare say this same picture is at my brother in laws house but we don't talk, (don't get me started) Having studied it closely there is no doubt it's my Janet.
  7. How many in the class!!! Think there were about 30ish in my class at Berridge.
  8. I'm not 100% but believe my sister is pictured here, middle row (excluding seated floor) second from right. She was born early 1951 so it's possible. Sadly she passed away last year way too soon.
  9. I think the stage was at the opposite end of the hall Jill. The end where the Heads office was.
  10. The toilets in the upper playground were in the top corner which is bottom left of the blown up picture. As far as I am aware they were just boys there not girls but I can't be certain as I never used the girls! I know if I went to that top corner of the playground outside the toilets you could see the time on Players clock, Radford Boulevard.
  11. It's me that said it was Anne. Jane correctly said its not so any confusion was mine not Janes. I know Anne lived on Lynmouth and her family moved to Skegness we think. We know the family who bought the house on Lynmouth from the Hutchings, Steph and Len Collishaw. It does love like Anne to me but with the age it can't be. The hymms were a large flip pad when I was there too. I concur with Jill. The backdrop to the photograph is the huts at the top of the playground. Some of my school photos are taken in the same spot, possibly the same day too.
  12. Hi Jill. Lady Jane looked and says it can't be Ann as she was younger and was no relation to hairdressers afaik. Correct on the others though.
  13. I recognise a few on that photo. Colin Dunn back 2nd from left, seated right floor Richard Sheard a 2nd cousin of my wife. Ann Hutchings seated front 4th left.Others are familiar, amazing after 55 years.
  14. The only head I recall was Mr Baugh and Mr Cook was one of my class teachers, my penultimate year at the school. I bumped into Mr Cook when I was in my 20's when for work I visited a school at Bulwell where he was the head. Incidentally Jill, I have spoken to my wife and she confirms it was a proper stage, curtains and all.
  15. The top hall for sure. The class rooms were accessed as the stage finished short of the wall on the right looking at it. It wasn't a temporary structure as I went underneath it a time or two. You could come off the stage right, into one of the classrooms without being seen from the hall.
  16. The lower playground is now a car park for staff I assume. The stage was what the teachers stood on to do the assembly every day. Proper stage I recall with curtains etc.
  17. In my logic and I was born and bred Radford an entry led to the back of houses and a twitchell was a route to get through to another road. Side of the vicarage on Hartley Road which goes through to Longsdale Road was a twitchell.
  18. A few years ago my wife and I went to have a look at Berridge as we were in the area. The school was turning out and a man who turned out to be the head asked if he could help. We told him we were both ex pupils and he treated us to a tour of the school spending some time with us. Considering to years it hasn't changed a great deal. Stage gone but still essentially as it was. That head was retiring so it will be a different one now. I still have the program for the school Christmas play, Aladdin, 1964 or 66 I think. I kept it as both myself and my wife appear in the cast list. We didn't know e
  19. What a disaster at Port Vale today. Scored a goal to go in front in the last 3 minutes against the run of play and couldn't hold on. I despair.
  20. My dad had the football post which was always pink.
  21. What was the shop on Front Street your wife's family had PP. I ask as my mothers grandparents had 'Ellis Bakery' on Front street which is now occupied by Birds. There is a book now available which names and gives brief details of everyone from the Arnold area who was involved in the Great War. It surprised me how thick the book is and how many of my family members are mentioned.
  22. As I have previously mentioned I worked at Raleigh for almost 4 years 1970-73. Most of it hadn't changed a deal from the opening shots in the film. Certainly the machine shops were the same. Probably some new automatic laths here and there but essential all looked exactly the same. I was lucky in that I was on the 'staff' not factory but was a humble gofer in the concept design dept. Rather than being stuck in one place In a repetitive task I went all over the factory for various things which was fabulous in that I saw every inch of this marvellous company in its halcyon but final days. The va
  23. Just seen the post 'snow on Mapperley Plains' which put me in mind of this from my youth. I lived in Radford on Grimston Road. I can't recall the exact year but late 1960's just after Christmas we had a heavy fall of snow. Naturally all the local kids were out. In search of good virgin snow we found ourselves on Woodstock Avenue and a large free for all snowball fight started. I clearly remember someone throwing a snowball towards me that fell short but rolled along gathered more snow as it rolled and growing in size so was pretty large when it stopped at my feet. I started rolling it and quit
  24. Boo-its=boots. I read a book by a north Notts police officer recalling cases he had dealt with and one of the chapters was when a locals best boo-its were stolen from the doorstep.
  25. I have been on the fair at least once every year of my life so this year was my 63rd year. My mum loved the fair and took me in the pram as a baby, pushchair as a toddler and under my own steam ever since. I almost missed one year when I was ill but rode my motorbike there and had a quick visit. I had a mild panic this year when I realised I would be away goose fair week on holiday but being open Sunday saved me so I went. No one else wanted to go with me so I did a Billy no mates and went alone. Certainly doesn't hold the magic it used to for me but I'll keep going while I can. No mud as ther
