  1. Jill has been sent this which was said to be taken at Berridge in 1910. However looking at the building in the background it does not seem to fit in with being at Berridge. Any ideas?
  2. Waitrose Newark checked today and they have no stock. In fact they said they don’t sell it.
  3. It’s an interesting thought but I’m unconvinced. They should have included them and I’m sure the vast majority will agree.
  4. It is reported that at the AGM of the National Trust it was revealed that the calendar for volunteers shows dates for Eid and Diwali but non for Christian festivals, Christmas and Easter prompting calls that the trust has become too woke. If this is the case I have to concur that this is ridiculous. We are long time members of the NT and I am aware that they have previously got themselves in a bit of a lather as many of the grand houses they look after have historical connections with slavery.
  5. Suella Braverman sacked. Next PM?
  6. Harvest suppers and come the new year plough Sunday is still a rural tradition around here. We used to go to the harvest supper in the church hall which has recently been sold with planning consent to convert to a house. I used to love Plough Sunday when lots of Morris dancing and folk musicians descended on the local pub yards from my door. I think there was a disagreement of some sort and such celebrations moved to a pub in Southwell.
  7. Yes. There was a serious blaze not so long ago in a similar location in some sort of waste/recycling centre.
  8. My wife is a regular at Waitrose Newark. If you want a bottle of Sandermans I can pick one up as I’m often in Giltbrook with my daughter in law.
  9. In fairness it was I that accosted Ms Jackson but Carol that came to me. Later she approached again and for a brief moment I thought she was asking if I’d like to go out with her. Allas she was merely asking the way out. Jane says she probably asked you where the loo was because she thought you were the cleaner. Cruel.
  10. There was a quite big Waitrose in Wollaton/Strelley which closed a year or two ago. It was formally a CoOp but now a Lidl or Aldi. Can’t recall which.
  11. It was over 25 years ago now but she was breathtakingly beautiful. A real stunner. Much much nicer than I thought she would be. She came to me, chose me from the dozens she could have and whispered sweetly “can you tell me where the little girls room is”. I can still feel the warmth of her breath on my face and the scent of her perfume as she slipped away. In answer Phil, you bet I did.
  12. Not sure you’re referring to me in this comment but not from me. I met Ms Vorderman briefly when I worked at the BBC. She was/is lovely and can do no wrong in my eyes. The beeb as the countries national broadcaster should preserve an unbiased stance, something they haven’t always achieved although the left will claim right wing bias and visa versa. I believe that Lineker did briefly have a refugee living with him, but a rather well to do one. Can’t recall the details.
  13. I see Carol Vorderman has gone from the BBC as her twitter (X) comments are not compatible with being a BBC broadcaster. I don’t know whether she decided that or it was decided for her. DJ. Gary Lineker has faced criticism for his outspoken views on various political matters on social media in recent months.
  14. I do like and enjoy wearing a decent watch. I’ve just sold my Oris which offer excellent value for money. Good Swiss automatic movements easily the match of far more expensive offerings. I’d had it about 20 years and only wore it probably a dozen times so it’s gone. Bit too chunky and heavy for me. I have an Omega which my dad bought in 1947 from someone he knew who’d been in the RAF, a military style black face simple manual wind. I do have it serviced every 5 years or so and it keeps excellent time. I’ve no idea of it’s value but I wouldn’t think it is terribly valuable but I wouldn’t part w
  15. The Clinton Street ‘Battery Man’ trailer used to be a chap who set it up after he retired or got made redundant. He ran it for a while then employed a friend of mine to run it for him. There was an agreement that when he, the owner that is, came to sell it, first refusal would go to the chap running it for him. However for whatever reason it was sold to the current owner who also now has the watch repair company on Trinity Walk. They are both the same owner.
  16. Socks! Can’t afford them but it’s Christmas soon and I live in hope.
  17. What annoyed me was one watch was a decent but not outstanding Skagen. Charge £10. The other was an expensive Tag Heuer which they charged £20. Same battery, nothing special. The Skagen was a bugger to do, very tight press on back and took ages. The Tag unscrewed easily and took a minute. No seals checked or replaced despite it being a 200 meter waterproof watch. I messaged the company and got a reply that if it were damaged it would be their responsibility and be expensive to repair and if the battery leaked and damaged it etc etc. I could smell BS. It’s like the garage charging £1.50 a litre
  18. Went in town yesterday and had 2 Watch batteries fitted at that mobile kiosk on Clinton Street. £30. Absolutely gob smacked.
  19. Trent at Bromley Arms Fiskerton, 1130am today (Sunday 22nd Oct 2023)
  20. Yes it does. The Greet passes Fiskerton Mill which is on the road to Rolleston, then onto the Trent. The land over the far side of the Bromley is farmland and an accepted flood plane. It’s where the battle of east Stoke was fought with the path there still known as red gutter as so much blood flowed down it to the river. I expect they’ll build houses on it before long.
  21. In 2000 just after I moved here the November flood water was just covering the tops of the picnic tables in front of the Bromley and the car park flooded to within 2 yards of the wooden flood barrier they put across the wall. Although it was dark last night it was water as far as you could see over the opposite bank.
  22. I’ve just been to the Bromley Arms (8.30pm) and the Trent is over the bank covering the footpath about an inch or so deep. Running very fast with large logs trees etc floating down. I spoke to one of the flood wardens who happened to be there who said it’s been rising about an inch an hour all day but now steadying at Colwick loch.
  23. RIP Sir Bobby who passed away today. Only one of the 66 World Cup winners now remain.
  24. Another from Berridge sourced by Jill who I’m posting it for. It shows the stage in the upper hall. This is the only picture showing the stage I’ve ever seen. I remember playing a ‘street beggar’ in the Christmas pantomime Aladdin in 1964 I beleive. My future and still wife Jane Flint was in the same production as a ‘jewel dancer’. I remember watching her from the wings. I wonder when the stage was removed. Jill will comment.
