  1. Can anybody help me remember a name of a pub?

It was located in the City center, somewhere behind The Tavern in The Town if I remember rightly(the road leading from the Market Square towards the Theater Royal). It had a medieval theme, you went down some stairs to get in and there was a well at the bottom with a skeleton in it!

I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called and it's now 'doin' me 'ed in'

I should also add that it was around 1987-1990ish.

I'm sure it was called Loxley Hall. I definately remember the skeleton down the well!!

Does anyone remember the Blitz diner on St James St. A WW11 themed bar?

  2. there was a tripe shop on wollaton street , opposite the gibbons stamp shop . used to sell tripe and onions, think it was where the royal hotel is now

So it is true!! I think I owe my old Dad a pint!! Doubting his integrity!

  3. Just caught up with this post. I certainly remember Katie's and Sandpiper, i used to dj at both back in 76/77 ish.

A guy called dave nettleton tracked me down through a fanzine i was doing at the time and asked me to dj at Katies,

there were only about a dozen punk singles out by then so it was a pretty boring set most nights. remember xtc, tom robinson, lurkers, the depressions all played there. Nettleton then took the show on to Sandpiper, where i dj'ed until one fateful night when, i believe it was the cortinas were playing, and me and a couple of mates got on stage and picked up their gear and did a very short impromptu set.

The boss man there, Pete(?) kicked us out and i was banned for life!! Very punk!! But i was dj'ing there the night The Ants played, and Sham, Magazine, there must have been lots more, but it's been a while.

And yes, I remember the Clash at the Palais, with Buzzcocks supporting, managed to get backstage and lig. Did you see the Nottm Punk Fest, in the old Vicci baths, Adverts, ATV, Chelsea, probabbly about may 77 ??

Someone mentioned the rockabilly bouncer at Sandpipers, I remember him well, but not his name, was it george ?? The bouncer i was most fond of was Tuggy, who seemed to be about 8ft tall, a huge jamaican bloke but a gentle soul, he'd never gotten into a fight, coz no-one would have been stupid enough!!

This is brilliant for my rapidly reducing memory!!I knew I'd seen Magazine in Nottingham. At the time I thought Nottingham had a terrible music scene, but looking back & reading these comments it was as lively as most other cities, it seems. Wonder why we never produced a great Punk Band?

I'm furious I missed the Cortina's playing, I loved them. I knew the Rockabilly bouncer, his name was definately George. Had a reputation for being as hard as nails, never saw him actually throw anyone out tho'.

Does anyone remember the Punk club at the ICC on Mansfield road on a Saturday afternoon? Like lots have already said the music was very limited to a few records.

Now, I'm convinced I saw The Cramps play at Sandpipers, very early in thier career-long before any real kind of fame. Lux interior was handing out plastic fangs to us outside. But I'm just doubting it could have been Sandpipers - but where else?

  4. I remember as a kid in the 60's going to a summer gala sports day at their beeston sports ground. It was Ericsons then.

One of their technicians had bult a wooden computer with nine valves

These lit up either O or X. You could play naughts and crosses with the box, but you could not win!

This was probaly the first computer that I ever saw, pretty impressive in those days.

I used to love the Sports Day at Plessey. You got a ticket for a free Ice Lolly and drink. The highlight of the Rylands Social Calander. My dad David Swift, used to work in the Stores at Plessy all his adult working life. Not sure if anyone remenbers him? Still lives in the Rylands

  5. Anyone caught up in the Nottm punk scene in the late 70s? (Yes there was one).

Go down Sandpiper or even Katies in Beeston? See the Clash at the Palais in 77 (oh yes!)

What about Sham at Pipers when they had to use the black guys from ad lib next door as stage security? Remember the Bollocks court case centred around Virgin window display in Nottingham?

Bash any teds or hippies? Get bashed?

Love to hear. Remind me of fun times. Punked 4ever.

I was definately caught up in the punk scene. I saw the Damned, Adverts, Slaughter & the Dogs and Adam & The Ants at Sandpipers, although I was still at school!! I also used to go to Katies in Beeston, I think I saw a local Punk band there called The Stukas. I got my head kicked in loads of times. I got beat up by Teds in Broadmarsh. Looking back, it's pretty odd, they were about 40 years old and I was a kid, what was that all about?. I got beaten up so badley by Skinheads, after a night at the Pipers, that I had to go to hospital. I told my mum I had fallen down the subway stairs on Maid Marian Way!!

I knew I'd seen the Clash in Nottingham, but couldn't remeber where!! That's age for you. It must have been the Palais, I know it was '77, but I thought it was a smaller venue. I used to travel all over to see groups. saw XRay Spex, Eater, The Damned loads( my personal favourites), early Siouxsie, Adam & The Ants, Unwanted, 999, Vibrators, etc etc all in 77-78-79. A couple of times at The Roxy club in London. I missed the Sex Pistols in Sheffield, my brother went, but my mum made me stay in as a punishment for something or other, how Punk is that?

  6. Does anyone remember the old joke shop, where the Royal Centre now stands? I think it was called 'The Sign of Four'. I remember the old fellas who used to work there and the wooden boxes behind the counter labelled Fart Powder, Nail thru finger, plastic vomit etc. Or did I dream it?

  7. My Dad swears blind that there was a shop, still there opposite the Theatre Royal - was a stamp shop last time I saw it, that sold nothing but tripe in the 50's. Can anyone verify this, or is it a load of old tripe?

  8. I stumbled upon this site while looking for material about the 'Never mind the bollocks' case. I can confirm it was the Virgin shop at 7 King St that the police raided - I was there when it happened. The manager was Chris Seale and other staff were Pete, Steve and Mike. No idea what the place looks like now as I haven't been to Nottingham for about 25 years but here's a photo from back in the day - Chris is on the right. I hope this ends the arguments!

I remember it really well. Downstairs used to play Dub and Punk (77/78) and had the singles down there. I remeber that the alphabetical dividers between singles has union jacks printed on them. I 'liberated' one of the 'Never Mind the Bollocks' posters from the stairwell. Wish I still had it, worth a fortune now. I hung around the court as the Bollocks case was heard, trying to see Johnny Rotten.

  9. Hiya Stuart....The old fella at Ad Lib was named Basil if memory serves me. He wore evening dress and would go round with a torch asking the ladies to "watch yer handbags!" Aaah for a goat curry and a dozen rum and blacks.

That's the fella!! The evening suit, how fantastic.

  10. I remeber it clearly. My girlfriend at the time used to buy her rubber dresses from there. I bought a nice pair of black cowboy boots with silver tips(c'mon it was the '80's). The logo was a skeleton with a garland of flowers around it's head. I'm terrible with names, but I used to know the guy who worked there really well, we used to hang out at Rock City. Ian I think!

  11. I frequented rock city EVERY sATURDAY night from 1985-1989... Do you remember the floor refurb? The disgusting carpet [from heart of midlands days] you used to stick to it... The then dj was a guy called Jonathon.. I went to see quite a lot of bands, my hero at the time was gene loves jezebel and managed to sneak back stage to them once. I also remember seeing Hawkwind, the place was like a fog that night and I'm not talking about the dry ice!!!When I first went down there it was very Sisters of mercy then became very glam rock [my fav. time] In about 1987 we would alternate between rock city and the garage [another great place where you would bang on a door to be let in] At rock city the ladies toilets were always full of 'chaps' wanting to borrow your hairspray - quite annoying really. Funnily enough 2 years ago I went back to rock city [hadn't been since 1989] to see Human League - it was packed. Phil Oakley still had it but the girls were terrible- both girls bra less and really looked there age!!! Still it was a good night still serving plastic glasses and cans of red stripe

Oh god, that carpet!! That carpet and the 'going's on' under the stairs!!

  12. Its not really Trivia, cos I don't know the answer.

A police series was filmed in Nottingham in the 1980's.

The lead character had a polish name and that was the title of the series.

I remember seeing them filming it on Devonshire Prominade, off Derby Rd.

    It never really took off.

    Anyone remember what it was?

I was an extra on Resnick. I answered an Ad in the Evening Post, and was paid about £60 a day(a lot then) !! I was a 'Jazz Fan' and a 'student' in the background in various pubs in Nottingham, one being The Angel in Hockley.

  13. Yep I remember those two. The latter if I have the right one is still around. He lives quite near The Peacock and is often to be seen wandering up and down the lower end of Mansfield Road and sometimes outside the Clock Tower entrance of The Vic Centre. Believe his name is Dennis. He has a short 'bob' wig these days but used to often wear a long blonde wig some years ago.

Does anyone remember the guy who used to stalk along the streets fairly silently then when he got up to you kind of 'explode' and shout in front of you? Enough to make you jump out of your y-fronts!

He (Dennis) was on TV last year!! One of those 'City of Vice' type programmes, you know the sort of thing, where we are all meant to be outraged, but secretly hoping for a spot of nudity!! He was arressted for soliciting on a street corner in Forest Fields, the police then discovered that 'she' was indeed a very ugly 'he'!! I don't think S/He was really looking to make any money, just liking the passing attention. Seem him around for years. We all called him Manwomen, we were clever like that!

What about the really tall tramp called Itchycoo. White chap with matted dreadlocks and old school tramp style 'flappy' shoes? Once came into the Jobcentre were I worked once and took a dump on one of the chairs.

How is it all tramps have such thick hair?

  14. This is how Broad Marsh interior looked, not long after completion.

Hard to believe this was 26 years ago.

BM was completed about 1975 :o

    How time flies.

Thanks for the photo, I remember buying my first pair of Oxford bags (green pinstripe, about a hundred buttons, mmm, nice)at a shop in Braodmarsh called I think SMT, which was upstairs near the rear escalators. I also bought (or rather my mum did!!) a rather fetching shirt, with a massive winged collar and a tank top with big stars across the front 1970's fashion, lovely. There was also a shop downstairs which had a white fibreglass cave effect. Can anyone remember that?

  15. Hey I'm new here so be gentle with me. I would love to 'talk' with anyone who used to go to Futurist nights at Rock City in the very early '80's. I used to every Friday & Saturday from it's opening up until about '87. When the fab green lazers and dry ice where the greatest thing ever!! They played Echo & the Bunnymen, Assocciates, Spizz, Hawkwind, Japn, Bowie etc all night. I used to go to just about evry gig that ever happened there, and around the country. Blamanche, Depehe Mode, Theatre of Hate Southern Death Cult and especially early Bauhaus, who I think I saw about 30 times!!

  16. The Sandpiper, cheers for that ,I have been racking my brains for years trying to remember the name of that place. All I ever get told is The Ad Lib Club

I saw The Damned there in 1979/80 it was snowing and we had a massive snowball fight outside afterwards

Ha!! I too was at that gig, I remember the snow and the snowball fight. I saw the Damned there twice, the first time was very early, must have been '77(?) my memory is getting very bad. The Sandpiper was wonderful.

  17. Hiya Sketchleyman, I used to go to the Sandpipers club, top punk venue. I saw Adam & the Ants there as well as the Damned, Slaughter & the Dogs, The Adverts and I think the Cramps in their very early days (I know I saw them in Nottingham, in Hockley, must have been Sandpipers?)You probabley would'nt reckognise the Lace Market now, all bars and penthouse appartments. I like my Hockley, rainy, dingey and victorian. I also used to go to the Ad-Lib club and Whispers, Do you remember the old guy at the Ad-Lib club, always smartly dressed, handing out sweets??

  18. Can anyoe remember the girl who hd a huge lump of a wig on her head? She had it for years and frequented Rock city a lot. She had heavy black make- up round her eyes, an actual masterpiece in artistry. I used to see her fully made up at 7.30 in the morning. This thing on her head started out as a hairpiece that got gluey and gluey and was on her head for years. I did see her again perhaps 5 years ago and it has now gone nd been replace with pink pieces that looked like rabbits ears BIZZARRE!!!

Anyhow I think her name is Nicola and she spoke very posh.....

I remember her clearly. We all called her (very clever!!) 'Glue Head' as I believe thats what she covered her hair in. If you ever got up close it looked like it had been varnished, very odd. I too saw her a few years later, when it was cut off and dyed all pink. Looked much better. I used to think that I looked outrages at the time, but she out madded all of us.
