  1. Never worked there, but know a lot that did...Another Nottingham landmark disappearing. And unlike the brewery opposite...completely.
  2. From what I read many years ago the road was impassable particularly in winter. The incline being a problem for horse drawn traffic. Paul.
  3. Not surprised your bed was soaked with all those widows...how many have you got on the go?
  4. Tesco Express five minutes to closing last week..7 loaves Warburtons 10p each,2 punnets strawberries..same...bought the lot. Paul.
  5. Like most folks I take note of sell by dates on food. But it always amazes me how few people realise there is a difference between them and 'best before' dates. Do you buy products cheaper if they are past their 'best before' dates...or do you strictly only buy goods that are within the 'best before' date, but at the full price? Personally I'm only fussy on products like bacon, fish, shellfish, cheese etc.But I ignore the 'best before' dates if the product is cheaper and looks ok. Paul.
  6. ...Or the tribe of newcomers that have moved in down the road from me, who decided to burn an old sofa last night. No wind...it hung around for hours...bless 'em.
  7. Thought this might come in handy for some on here... http://www.onthegosoft.com/shrink_pic.htm?referer=shrinkpic
  8. Beefsteak....they're all the same. My old lady when alive could throw away for England... In the sixties when man landed on the moon I remembered the old newspapers under the carpets at the old house. As a kid I used to read these papers about this character Hitler and his gang from years earlier... So the day after the moon landings I bought EVERY paper (Including the Morning Star) I wrapped 'em carefully in brown paper and hid them in the attic for my future kids to read one day. 20 years later I went up there......nothing. "What happened to that parcel in the attic Mum?" "Oh you me
  9. Car Boots more or less started off during the recession when Maggie was in power...It was a way to raise cash flogging off some accumulated junk. And shortly after some made a few tax free pounds by becoming small traders and flogging other peoples junk. Apart from anything else it was something to do on those long Sundays when everywhere else was shut. (Now you'd need to plant bombs to shut 'em) To those of you from abroad...Do you have similar...or is it just the odd 'garage sale'? On moving to my first home with a garden I kitted myself out with a complete set of almost brand new garden t
  10. Yeah!...alongside the credit card and zero parking (Supermarkets have plenty) It's putting us small retailers out of business. Paul.
  11. I read recently that the area of the market square was very boggy donkeys years ago and that they brought in cart loads of Roman stone taken from the Fosse Way near Willoughby on the Wolds. So it would seem that below the cobbles in the square was an even more ancient surface. Paul.
  12. I take it cobbles were made of natural hard wearing granite. Just did a search to see if they are still available...they are...Guess where most come from?....Yep...CHINA Paul.
  13. The tar!...What was it about the tar?...it used to bubble on hot summers days.I think every townie kid in the fifties got loused up and got a clout off his Mother. We amused ourselves in those days 'cause we spent every available hour playing outside. Paul.
  14. When I worked in Loughborough many years ago a local small garage owner had a Tiger...nice car. He used to tow an ancient battered trailer to pick up and dump engines/gearboxes etc. His tow car for this....an equally battered XK120 Jag... What would that be worth now? Paul.
  15. I remember in the fifties there were still quite a few streets that were cobbled, especially around Basford, St.Anns, and the Lace Market. Over the years the roads were covered with modern tarmac with occassional gutters still showing the old cobbles. It's something you never really noticed disappearing as a kid. I remember coming off my bike on Alpine street Basford just round from the White Swan....nearly broke my neck..God those cobbles got slippery when wet. Must've been ruddy noisy when iron wheeled carts used to trundle along them. Did you live on a cobbled Street?...are there any left?
  16. Betcha life there would be 1 plumber 1 electrician etc. Just in case the 'Dignitaries' blocked a toilet or blew a fuse. Paul.
  17. Bazzer...you say the street was terraced houses from top to bottom.....are you sure you mean 'first road on the right' going up? The houses on the right hand side roads off Nottingham Rd are mostly posh Victorian types. It's the left of the road that has the streets with terraced houses. Paul.
  18. I remember...lucky sod, Vernons I think...kept cutting hair though. Paul.
  19. I've probably seen you at Teesdale, I used it regularly in the early 60s...Frank was a serious looking guy...was he? And I used to live opposite Swan on Nuthall Rd. Only went to Oscrofts once with a 50s Vauxhall Cresta ...boy could that model rot!!! Small world... Paul.
  20. ...Had a gasket go on the master brake cylinder the other week...My bloke...one of the old school, refused to buy a complete replacement set, and cut out his own gasket from some sheet he had in the bottom of a cupboard....'aint seen that done for a while ...or met another guy who would have gone to the trouble...that's why I stick with him. Paul.
  21. There are so many in and around Nottingham that have disappeared it would be pointless my naming them. The decline in the little man is getting worse and worse, many of the small garages that had a small sales forecourt and petrol pumps out front are now very rare. For instance one in Woodborough, where the land was worth a bomb and sold off for house building.(When you could sell houses)The filling station on Coppice Road Arnold...land for sale.... One by one they are gone forever, forcing us to use the bigger filling stations. Now they too are going because they can't compete, forcing motorists
  22. It was a prefabricated building...lots of windows. Paul.
  23. I used to get Meccano bits from Lee & Goodjohns trying to build up to the next set bit by bit.And just before that the bike shop where I got my first Carlton bike £21...my pride and joy. Then the Post Office...Cookes sweet shop...Watkins the grocer..A motor repair shop..Jack Norris the butcher...and of course Stansby's.Probably one or two shops in between that I forget. My brother got his first Lambretta from Breffits...practised on the waste land at the back...drove it home and promptly rammed the concrete gate post.He was nearly in tears...saved ages for that scooter. Opposite Stansby's
  24. "Never give a sucker an even break" W.C.Fields 1941 "Morning....I've got some tarmac left over from a job down the road...Nod Nod ...Wink Wink.... I can do your drive for just £500 "Morning....We've just fitted out a hotel down the road with top quality Wilton contract carpet and have a load left over...Nod Nod... Wink Wink....and can do your whole house for just a £1000 "Morning ...I've just replaced a whole roof on one of your neighbours...And I've noticed you have a few tiles need replacing....We've got some left over Nod Nod... 25. Is there something special about a you tube link? Paul.
