  1. It would appear from this link (Last two paragraphs first page) That in 1228 men of Bullwell were given the common of pasture in the wood of 'Beskwood' Beskwood being part of Sherwood Forest and belonging to the King...it would appear that the area known now as Bulwell common and Bestwood was part of that forest and the words 'common' and 'forest' have been used by locals over the centuries as being one and the same. The forest would still belong to the crown but right of pasture for cattle would in this case have been granted to commoners. Not something encouraged in most Royal forests a
  2. If there's an area called 'the common' you can almost guarantee that it was before the enclosure act of the late 1700s...I'll have a look around see what I can find Paul.
  3. Somebody's gonna have to ask 'Westons' that question (Or whoever owns the company now) The times I've heard that said....I've always thought the same.I wonder if we are all suffering an illusion?? Maybe not.....
  4. As a matter of interest due to the current world fuel and food shortages 'Bassetti' licorice sticks at 10p have now been increased to 15p and 10p candy fags by a similar amount, along with quite a few others.A fifty percent increase overnight....welcome to the 2008 rip off. Paul.
  5. Bump Barnetts gradually moved their operation from Hartley Rd. to their No.2 factory site on Cobden Street during 1971/2 When the new factory was built alongside the small existing factory. The Hartley Rd factory was originally about 5 terraced houses knocked into one and converted into the factory...no planning rules in those days. The land at Cobden street was bought many years previous and was originally the site of a large detached house. For many years there were large wooden sheds on the site crammed full of old sweet jars, many similar to the huge waisted jars seen in Victorian chemis
  6. Found this interesting.... http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:TSakX...;cd=6&gl=uk
  7. Were they electric or is the old grey matter playing up again? Paul.
  8. Another unrelated memory from the ad on the bus. When that picture was taken I was probably working at a Crawfords depot in the railway yard on Wilford St. The yard was full of dozens of those British Rail electric three wheel delivery vehicles...remember them? Can't remember the vehicle make. Funny looking things with articulated trailer. Paul.
  9. Sounds about right .....Could hear them in Arnold. Sounded like distant battlefield. I hope you enjoyed them but I'm afraid it's not my favourite pastime...I keep birds and every year it is a headache to stop them panicking and breaking their necks. It wouldn't be a problem, but nowadays they are just too loud...not necessary surely? I'm sure tens of thousands of pet owners wish they would tone it down a bit. Paul.
  10. Recent posts have not been over informative...I've enjoyed going through the older ones. And many times have wished they were not so old, as I'd love to comment on some of the points made. Paul.
  11. Makes sense if the bus is facing South towards Wilford Rd.Didn't realise there was such a slope. Paul.
  12. If the bus is on a forward slope that makes the background Derby Rd way...Is that Albert Hall then?? Paul.
  13. Dunno was thinking that myself...buses parked outside though?...and cars...Can't place it. Paul.
  14. This old sixties picture jogged a memory...long time since I saw a chock under the front wheel of a bus.I remember as a kid the buses from Cinderhill way on Hanley Street Terminus used to use these Was it 'cause the handbrakes were unreliable?...Or some old Health & Safety rule? Paul.
  15. Before Broad Marsh Centre wasn't there a car park opposite Woolies on Lister gate? And you could see across to Redmayne & Todd.A clock tower in the middle? and the Denham Pub in the right hand corner? Paul.
  16. The 'Towers' pub ...now there was a class joint...All tarts and Yanks. Dunn & Co. was on the corner .....all Trilby's and Moleskin trousers.Sawyers Arms over the road. Paul.
  17. Maybe more of an ARRRGGGGGGGGHH!!
  18. I've always liked this one...definitely an 'Oops'
  19. I remember on the corner of Queens Rd, shortly before the demolition of the Meadows, a big antique and curio shop that was run by Tony Olivero previously one of the partners of the Blade Club (Burton St.?) the other being the greengrocer Bernard Patrick Smith (BPS Central market) In a previous post there is a mention of Lee & Goodchild who had a shop on Nuthall Rd...trouble is my memory is of Lee & GoodJOHNS...I may be wrong.I used to buy meccano sets and bits off them. There is also mention of a model train shop near the bridge...they had a first floor showroom with a giant set up o
  20. Betcha life WE have to maintain and paint it for donkeys years to come... Why didn't they just build a dome?
  21. The only thing missing is the crane on the top....It's certainly 'making me think of my ambitions and where I aim to go in life'............Oh yes.
  22. Carlton Forbes....The New Calypso Club.
  23. Anybody have info on Burnstump? I've been going there for years with my dogs ...usually at dawn when no-ones about,it's peaceful then. I know before The council and the police took over it was NCB headquarters. And originally the land was owned by one of the powerful local landowners...The Seely family I think without double checking. Anyway...in the woods to the right of the path from the toilet block are some huge trees. Two have been cut down many years ago...one remains in place. Those felled were obviously rotten on the inside. The remaining tree (Which I'm struggling to identify) is, I
  24. None of those ...sorry. I think I was one year behind you. Paul.
