  1. Misprint above, sorry. It should read horse chestnut, NOT aphorise. Back to school Terry!
  2. It's either aphorise chestnut (conker) tree , or the sweet chestnut. The colour change is somewhat earlier than we are experiencing in the north of the county if the photo is recent.
  3. Findus fish fingers have been found to contain 60% sea horse
  4. At the road junction A610/Western Boulevard there stands a short row of shops. They stand at an angle to the junction as it was originally a traffic island before the traffic lights were installed. Newcastle colliery was accessed via a road at the right side of these shops and was situated to the rear about 200 yards back.
  5. I worked at Babbington until 1958. The building to the right of the headstocks was the canteen and the pithead baths. The Collier's Arms is further to the right and out of shot. Incidentally, the two shafts covered by the tandem headgear were Known as "Windy" and "Smokey" since this was ventilated originally by a fire in the shaft bottom.
  6. Hi Faye, I'm from Kirkby in Ashfield' between Coxmoor and Hollinwell golf courses.
  7. Type in "Strelley House, Bulwell Nottingham". The page reveals a detailed account of the history of the house. On the same page, details of the old Bulwell Hall can be found, quite an impressive building in it's heyday, but little more than a riun when we used to explore it as kids.
  8. The old school house, (known as Strelley House), dates from the mid 1600's and is situated at the junction of Commercial Road/Strelley Street. It is also famous for it's (delapidated) dovecote.
  9. Sorry about that. Being a Luddite, I did'nt know how to place my question in the correct place. I just responded as I thought right. Any way, do you have an answer?
  10. This one's not black & white, it's sepia. In the 50's Amos and Andy show, Who was Kingfish's wife?
  11. Glad to be of service. To be honest, I was corresponding to Jean recently as we both attended the same school. Unfortunately there was several years difference, so we had little in common to share.
  12. Jean Riley, now retired, lives in Torquay, Devon. Further details can be obtained via Friends Reunited. Look under "Quarry Road Infants School". If no success, mail me and I'll pass on your details. Terry
  13. I attended the Peoples College on College Street between 1951/1954. It was then soley for the Building trade, covering subjects such as bricklaying, plastering, plumbing, etc. The intention was that pupils went into various building trades apprenticeships on completion of their study years.
  14. As far as I can recall, the railway spur that fed Hucknall No. 1 (Top pit) was linked to the line from Bulwell Common Station and as such crossed Hucknall Lane over the viaduct near Bulwell Lido.
  15. I can remember going to the Newcastle coal wharf with our next-door neighbour when he drove a coal delivery lorry for a firm called Rhodes from Bobbers Mill in the late 40's. There were no signs of it ever being a pit then. On a similar note, my grandfather, who worked at Bulwell Shonky pit till it's closure, told me that the shafts at Digby pit near Kimberley were filled with ex military radio equipment. This may well validate the Newcastle story.
  16. I am an Ex miner. My working life was: 1954-1959 Cinderhill/Babbington 1959-1968 Bentinck 1968-1978 Thoresby 1978-1989 Sutton. Any help for you?
  17. They also had another bakery on Latham Street, Bulwell
  18. Wasn't it ARCO Rewinds? I think it was a Birmingham based company with workshops all over the midlands. I recall that they did a lot of electric motor refurbishment for the N.C.B
