  4. Just been thinking of years gone by and a particular pub comes to mind, The Mechanics Arms on Alfred Street North, does anyone recall the good nights at the weekends when you could have a sing a long on the mike, a chap at the piano, a bloke on the drums and an open mike. It was a great night out, if you wasn,t in the pub by about 8 you couldn't get a seat. The landlord and landlady were a couple by the name of Ron and Beattie, sadly both passed on now. Another thing about the pub was it was one of only two 'Davenport' houses in Nottingham. Does anyone else recall this particular watering
  5. Of Course Mick - its all coming back to me now, it was the 26th annual convention of the Elvis Presley fan club of Great Britain, we were just about to board the bus for a trip to Skeggy where we were to see Charlie Gracie singing fabulous then onto the 'Shades' for a pint of Bombardier and a packet of scratchings!

  7. Yes it would be about that, the new 'Holy Trinity Church' which replaced it was built on the top junction of Farnborough Road/Southchurch Drive in Clifton, I got married there in 1976, can remember it as though it were yesterday - if it was tomorrow, I wouldn't go!
  8. I remember going to the 'old market square' in the 50's on a sunday, Sundays were dead in town in them days, something to do with the 'sabbath', anyway, every Sunday it was gauranteed you could see some chap stood on the wall speaking about religion, politics or anything which came to his mind, a large crown would gather and listen intently. I found it very interesting and amusing though, then there was the chap who used to walk up and down Listergate holding a bible on higjh and saying 'repent, the end is nigh' - is end was, he's passed over now.

  14. Eh BIP. I know the Victoria very well. My lad lives just around the corner (Barton St), so go there quite often! I'ts just won a prestigious award from CAMRA for its ambience. food, and of course REAL ALE. I am a fully paid up member of the real ale club, you can keep your overpriced lagers or your 'too damn cold' keg beers give me a pint of decent cask any day of the week. Got ta say that the 'Vic' is one of the best pubs around, also, another good pub for real ale I find is 'The Boat' at Lenton, just opposite St Nazareth House, now flattened and to be turned into flats/apartments (why do

  16. Archieboy, I think you are the wrong end of 'University Blvd' the picture shows the dried up pond at the Beeston end of the park, the actual Lido was where the new science park is at the Dunkirk end, just to the right of the traffic lights as you are approaching town. I too remember going there as a kid, my parents would take me from Clifton, 2 bus rides, I thought I had gone miles!
