I think he suffered from heart trouble, he had a weak heart from childhood and it finally gave out at the early age of 42 (the same age Elvis died at - now there's a coincidence)

There were four speeds on the old record players, 16 rpm, 33 rpm, 45 rpm and 78 rpm. What the hell was 16 rpm for?
-
OK - anybody still recall those old 78 rpm records we used to make plant pots out of when we got bored with the song, I still have several, Norman Wisdon, Joyce Grenfell, Joe Loss etc, anyone else?

No Mick, they made GOOD records in the 60's -
I think the Scala was opposite the old Victoria Station wasn't it? It was the haunt for people of a less than savoury disposition, - the dirty mac brigade!

If anyone is interested it's the anniversary of the death of Billy Fury today - just a piece of useless information!

There was a fire at Chilwell Depot, can't quite remember the year, but a complete warehouse shed went up in flames, set on fire by an irate storekeeper, who was later convicted and jailed for arson. Yes there was a massive explosion during the 1st World War when the Depot was used as a shell filling factory, I think it was 1916, production was resumed about month after, and the depot became known as the VC factory. Did you know that every other shell fired in the first world war was made at Chilwell. Eh I know, I work there!!!!
-
Can anyone relate to Chilwell Depot, it used to be massive as a COD but now of course, is much smaller with a lot of the land turned over to housing, but this must be the making of a good topic, I bet folk have lots of memories, come on, lets crack on!

Vaguely, was it a motor bikers club? -
I remember that when I was in the Army, some wives, not all I hasten to add, would put an OMO packet in their window when there husband was away on duty, I think it stood for 'old man out' and was suposed to attract the single studs - so I'm told!!!!

I remember when I first moved to Clifton Estate (1954), which as most of us know, aint too far from W.Bridgford, well we scruffy kids thought everybody from Bread and Lard Island were millionaires, it's only when you get older that you realise how the nick name came about, they aint no better than ayone else! Another term for folk who came from ther was 'fur coat and no knickers'

I've already told my other half that I want The King singing 'How great thy are' as they carry me in, and maybe 'Memories' when everyone is leaving - I wonder if you can hear them!!!!

Correct Mick, he used to run all the barrow boys in town. He was a pro boxer for a while but hgot a bit punch drunk near the end, he also did the boxing booths down the Fair. My mate usedf to live next door to him up Clifton, so I got to know him quite well, he really was a nice bloke when you got to know him, eh, but don't cross him. Unfortuantely he is now in the the big boxing ring in the sky.

Anyone remember 'Johnny Carrington' real name 'Johnny Larvin' he used to live up Clifton?
