  1. Unlikely that many of the local modern generation of boys will be able to emulate any of the above reading memories... Notts now the worst nationwide for reading skills - bar none. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-12000886 Cheers Robt P.
  2. Had many dealings with GT Cars on St Peter's Street, whilst buying a succession of new Renault 12's', over several years. The 12 was a very popular motor in it's day, with the bonus of having seating which was akin to sitting in a Gentleman's Club! Only major issue was rather temperamental valves. Always found that GT Cars were an excellent company to patronise... Cheers Robt P.
  3. Remember school medicals at Crane juniors, but not at High Pavement... Also recall my 10 year old pride in having to display my three-piece suite, for the benefit of a nubile young nurse... Cheers Robt P.
  4. Have never understood why the 'walk-in' mass Chest X-ray tasking - primarily for TB detection - fell out of use from the 70's onwards... Especially that, since mass immigration has been prevalent, the TB incidence has risen considerably - particularly in places such as Leicester. Had it been retained the early lung cancer detection rates would also have been vastly improved. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11970799 Cheers Robt P.
  5. Thanks for your info', hadn't realised it was on DVD... Earlier issues seem rather expensive, so I've pre-ordered a reissue - which isn't due out until June 2011! Cheers Robt P.

    2018

We have to learn that many in the world see the English as arrogant and presumptious. Doubt that even a more professional, and methodical, 2018 campaign would have changed this. The dysfunctional Prince (AWOL, yet again?) and 'Call me Dave' attending this gathering was a clear indication of our desperation. What did simpleton Beckham bring to the presentation? The guy can hardly string a sentence together..."yer know","obviously","at the end of the day" etc... Cheers Robt P.
  7. Have just heard, from someone who works on County Council roads, that there has been almost two feet of snow around Mansfield and there is a losing battle to keep the A614 open at Leapool and the A60, beyond Ravenshead. A considerable snowfall here in Bingham... Cars still being driven past my bungalow as if it is mid-July! I'm located at a T-junction and, within the last hour, two such idiots have slid whilst making the turn - and finished up within a short distance of my brickwork... Rog: Sorry to read of your accident...a fall from your sled fitted 3-wheeled settee would have been less
  8. Scroll down for many pictures... http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/n/new_basford/index.shtml Cheers Robt P.
  9. "A witty reader (he's not sent his name, fearing legal reprisals) sends in a wonderful fantasy in which Michael O'Leary of Ryanair takes over our East Midlands Trains, and runs it like his airline. The ticket prices will look like amazing bargains, say Nottingham to London for £1." "But these principles will apply: fee of £5 for internet booking, £5 for timetable inquiries, £5 for credit card payments, £20 for clicking the OK – pay button, admission charge to station, charge for compulsory on-board ticket inspection, £5 alighting fee, £10 penalty for not pre-ordering £5 alighting fee, and t
  10. "...The Countess [of Wessex] also met a group of young mums involved with the Family Nursing Partnership programme, which provides guidance and support to first-time pregnant teenagers and their families" "...Chantelle Wilkinson, 19, of Sneinton, who was there with 17-month-old daughter Summer-Leigh Astle Brown said..." This is Nottingham,17/11/10.
  11. In common with just about every poster, I was also sat behind a school desk - in the middle of an exam! Certainly quite alarming, worsened by the fact that it was everyone's first 'quake experience. The shake of around 4/5? years ago, which epicentered beneath Long Clawson, was perhaps felt even more strongly (and of longer duration) here, than I recall of the '57 event at Bestwood. Was sat at home beneath a very heavy book-case, which shook violently!...a few more notches on the Richter, and I'd have been the famous sole fatality. Cheers Robt P.
  12. Was it not Ron Davies who scored with 4 headers for Southampton in their 4-1 victory at Old Trafford against a Man Utd side with Best,Charlton and Law in their ranks? Yet another Welsh international who was strong in the air was the late Ken Leek, of Leicester City. Not forgetting the great John Charles... My posting of 25/01/10: Best headers of a ball, in my time: 1) Tommy Lawton v v ...big gap... v 2) Nat Lofthouse (Bolton) 3) Sandor Koscis...aka 'The Golden Head' - (Hungary) 4) Ron Davies (Southampton) 4=) Tony Hateley (Notts) 6) Denis Law (Man U) 7) John Charles (Leeds) 8) T
  13. Stu, Reckon the Tommy Lawton/Tommy Wilson eras didn't quite overlap. Suggest that Lawton is always acknowledged as the 'Bradman' of heading, certainly in the 20th century game... Tommy Wilson was great in the air, but the only name I've ever heard geniunely submitted as a rival to Lawton would be Jimmy McGrory of Celtic...my own personal best (that I've seen) behind Lawton was Tony Hateley. Ironically, the best Tony Hateley headed goal that I saw was v Walsall, when Tommy Wilson was leading the visitors attack! Seems that Carroll of Newcastle has now emerged as a decent header of the bal
  14. Certainly Tommy Wilson was the best header of the ball that I've ever seen in the Garibaldi No 9 shirt. Typified by the superb goal that he scored in the '59 FA Cup final... Jack Burkitt often insisted that it was the best headed goal he'd ever seen, and he'd seen a few! He left Forest for Walsall in the early 60's, and then down to Brentwood - where he retired. Sadly, he lost a leg, through illness, in his mid 40's - and died shortly afterwards. A cousin of mine has known Tommy's widow since childhood, and is still in contact. Apparently, she always wears his '59 winners medal around he
  15. Saw him play a few times in the late 50's. Clearly past his best by then...tended to suddenly run out of steam! Nevertheless, he and Dougie Lishman were important cogs in the Forest team which gained promotion to the First Division - but both moved on shortly afterwards. Read a strange fact,in another obit', that Spurs (with whom he played pre-war) understood that he had 'died in action' in WWII...until he turned up in a Chelsea shirt, in 1946! Quickly moved back to White Hart Lane and became part of their famous 'push and run' team, of the early 50's. Cheers Robt P
  16. Not so, Ian... When Nottingham was being raided, 'decoy' fires were rapidly lit in the Vale of Belvoir to convey to the later waves of Luftwaffe bombers that it was the location of the city ablaze... Hence the "Starfish" fire decoy system, mentioned in Cliff Ton's attachment. It was an extremely successful exercise in deceiving the attacking bombers... Also, the fact that they usually flew in from due east meant that the Belvoir blazes were first to be seen. Cheers Robt P.
  17. "...There were eleven attacks on Nottingham during this night but the use of the “Starfish” fire decoy system, located in the Vale of Belvoir..." Even today, take the road from Bingham to Harby and you'll see at least 20 large bomb craters in the fields, either side... Cheers Robt P.
  18. Had to have been the Albert Hall! Perhaps the wrong prank to play, as their organ was a speciality of the formidable deputy-Head, the terrifying Ralph Crossland...all stops out, and blow the roof off! We clearly overlapped with Stanley Road/Gainsford Crescent etc... Can't recall anyone leaving after 3 years...who did you kill? BTW: A further thought on the school song... IIRC, it was written by Senior Classics Master "Isiah" Clarke - so named as he had one eye higher than the other... Cheers Robt P.
  19. rob237 "...Sorry this is way off thread but I have just noticed an entry of yours way back in 2007 where you quote the start of the old school song - Una voce concinamus omnes Paviores. Any chance you have the rest of it? Would love to get hold of a copy for old times sake. I am no latin scholar so have no idea what the words mean, although I estimate I must have sung it some 2,000 times. I can hear the next line or so in my mind but there is no way i am going to make a d... fool of myself by trying to spell it out. Hope you can oblige. My years were 43 to 49..." Hackie. Hackie, http://web
  20. My initial thought too...Ilkeston Co-op??? Perhaps with the famous Star Inn at the bend/junction, on the right??? Or is it Hilltop, nearer to Kimberley?? Cheers Robt P
  21. The 3 grandkids set off from my house at 5PM, for a 'trick or treat' session...dressed in the appropriate garb. Amazed when they returned, less than 2 hours later, with more than 50 items of sweets/chocolates, apiece! For me to think that will save me a few quid in buying similar for them the near future, is perhaps the wrong attitude to take Cheers Robt P.
  22. Not really my sport, but congratulations to Worksop's Lee Westwood on being ranked No 1 in the golfing world... Cheers Robt P.
  23. Two excellently written contributions, on a very evocative subject. So much of what you both write rings numerous bells... The "quietness/clocks ticking" mentions being a particular prominent memory! My own maternal grandparents had died in the 40's, so I was left with my other grandparents on Zulu Road, Basford. Will attempt tomorrow to add my own memories to your own...because I've had rather a Bad Day at Black Rock day! Cheers Robt P.
  24. OH NO II !!! My post of 06/06/10: "...Relief too, that the local sports columns have been spared a very one-dimensional Burley or, most especially, that consistent managerial failure Ince, who has proved - time and again - to be as much use as Anne Frank's drumkit..." Cheers Robt P.
  25. You misinterpret a posting of mine, yet again! Never did I infer that I did not enjoy the aviation pics, which I greatly admire... Also, have to disagree on the "Members Interests" section, as there are clearly a majority of members who enjoy them. My initial observation simply related to the 'quotes' edict... "You do not have to read the topic" has blatantly become a silly, worthless cliche within the group. BTW: The one who was first told "...you do not have to read...etc" was the one who was, at that time, solely highlighting the offensive topics!!!!!!! Cheers Robt P.
