  1. On second thoughts it was the Dog & Pheasant! Grr! The Dog & Partridge is on Parliament Street near what is now Boots. Getting my game birds mixed up! In fact, I believe there were two Dog & Partridges pretty much opposite each other at one time. A "new" and an "old". (or was that just too much local ale!?)
  2. I was privileged to know Stanley Middleton at High Pavement many years ago. He was highly respected by all who met him. A great author, teacher and a real gentleman.
  3. Ah yes. Names that bring back memories of a mis-spent youth! I think the pub near the NHS centre was the Dog& Partridge, a former Homes Ales watering hole. I don't know of any books or websites specifically on lost pubs but this link is worth a look: http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/news/Nottingham-pubs-Past-present/article-783564-detail/article.html especially the "related links" section. No doubt other members can add to this.
  4. Yep. Barrow Hill definitely. Main loco yard / viewing area outside the roundhouse.
  5. Hmmmm, definitely ex GN but tricky.... I'll have to go with Derby Friargate as well.
  6. Youtube video of derailed Hall 4-6-0 on Nott Vic turntable can be found on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBvPRfkpS1A East Midlands Trains have now started to run a HST from Nottinghan to Skegness on Summer Saturdays. This would probably be the one spotted at Radcliffe-on-Trent. Not as good as a pair of Class 20's + carriages but a big improvement on the usual DMU service. More room too!
  7. Thanks to everyone for their comments. I'm surprised how many shops were actually using this system, I always thought there was just the one!!
  8. As a kid I remember visiting a shop in Nottingham city centre that had a pneumatic tube system. Basically the assistant put the the cash into a small container which was then placed inside a clear plastic tube. The cash was then shot up the tube (with a whoosh!), across the ceiling and into a cash office, where a receipt was prepared and sent back the same way. Absolutely fascinating to watch! The question is, can anyone remember where this shop was, or is it just a figment of my (ageing) imagination?
  9. Seems that the Nottingham Heritage Centre in Ruddington is opening its new platform on July 11th when visiting '04' 63601 will be hauling trains. The station is also going to be officially named, but we have to wait and see what has been chosen. Rumours abound but the odds-on favourite is "Nottingham South"...........
  10. Many thanks Firbeck, I will print these out. Already spotted a reference to the Dido for the Annesley no.4 box. Amazing to think that every movement was carefully logged in this way. If I read the Staff Time Book correctly for Annesley Yard then several chaps have put in a 12 hour shift. Not sure this would be allowed these days!
  11. Firbeck Your garage sounds like a real treasure trove! The signal box logs would make fascinating reading - I would have thought the GCR museum in Loughborough would be interested, but understand what you're saying about history being stuffed in a glass case. If you were willing to scan in a few bits I would be interested for one! Certainly wish I'd made loads of notes and taken lots of pictures but as a kid you just don't think to do these things. Yes certainly remember the old lamp outside New Basford entrance. Also recall an enamel BR station sign (LMR maroon I think) and some big hinged
  12. Must have been great to live on Harmston Rise and see trains hammering up the Rat Hole gradient at the end of your garden!
  13. Great pic of New Basford station. Used to hang around there as kids (until told to clear off!) also Perry Road bridge. So sad to see it like this. The preserved GCR stations at Rothley and Quorn are very similar to the layout at New Basford, even down to the gents loo with no roof. Only real diff is that passenger entry at New Basford was up from Haydn Road, not down from an overbridge. It always seemed strange walking up the gloomy stairwell into the "greenhouse" bit at the top, it suddenly became so bright with all the glass and (I think) there were white tiles to make it even lighter.
