  1. In the post dealing with the 'Dandy' and 'Beano', I mentioned I had three copies of the book, 'Kidnapped'. Does anyone else collect copies of one favourite book?
  2. As a child I had a copy of 'Kidnapped' Told in Pictures, which sadly was lost but I managed to find a copy in later years on an antiques stall. The book is beautifully illustrated by Dudley D. Watkins who as already mentioned #4 also did illustrations for the 'Dandy' and 'Beano'. I believe he similarly illustrated a copy of 'Treasure Island'. This copy of 'Kidnapped' is one of three I have of the excellent book.
  3. On matters medical, I see the medics are advising HRT again for the ladies. Some while back our doctor recommended that all women from early age should go on HRT. My wife didn't as I recall but years later underwent mastectomy for breast cancer. Her surgeon, a very attractive lady as it happens, told her NOT to go on HRT whatever else she did. Another fine example of why my trust in the medical profession is not 100%.
  4. I always thought the interesting thing about the Archers was how they were reincarnated. Walter Gabriel, he of the gravelly voice, snuffed it but soon turned up again. Harry Oaks, Dan Archer, arose in similar vain. I don't know if they are still more or less immortal. I wonder if they're all Buddhists.
  5. Then we had the 'Adventures of P.C.49', a police contemporary of 'Paul Temple'. All good stuff that kept you glued to the radio of an evening..
  6. It reminds me of the late 40s early 50s at the Wm Crane infants' school when cold toast used to be taken in for a snack/breakfast and I remember one lad who used to eat a candle. If that isn't a feed line, I don't know what is!
  7. Television advertizing has already been discussed in these annals but what really annoys me is the incongruity of the adverts' costing thousands/millions (Christmas is coming), ecouraging us to eat, drink and be merry, being puntuated with requests for £2 a month for foreign aid of some type, medical charities and animal welfare etc. What a pity the funds lavished on trying to get money out of our pockets can't be diverted to more beneficial aims.
  8. Nottstalgia today - Tomorrow THE WORLD!!!
  9. After retiring I worked week ends at a friend's outdoor pig farm. I enjoyed it despite being knocked over a fence by an inmate but I finally packed it in when when 6 inches of mud on the boots made things a bit unpleasant.
  10. I wonder what the present younger generation will think when/if they reach retirement age. Will they blame the parents of the then 'their' younger generation? Will they be resorting to corporal punishment as I think they might? Will they regret the loss of their past? I have already heard 20/30 somethings regretting the loss of their 'old days'. Perspective always seems to deceive and what goes around comes around. The question I often ask myself is, would I like to be young again and a part of the present younger generation in the world as it is? I don't think I would.
  11. My daughter's cat has some sort of fixation with my feet. I never thought they were my best feature but then I can't be choosey.
  12. That reminds me of certain items of ladies' sanitary wear which makes you rides bikes, swim, play tennis and go to dances at night.
  13. I remember a device for removing the foil tops of milk bottles. It looked like a flying saucer; a plastic disc with a raised centre which you pressed into the bottle top. #3063 I believe they stopped using grease proof paper on OXO cubes when the stock market collapsed.
  14. Love a good book and having two or three lined up which I know I will enjoy. Hate the fact that I'm being left behind by stultifying technology.
  15. My wife says I'm the best thing in her life. (???)
  16. Iron hoop and a stick. Useful for getting to work.
  17. One of those film actresses we all recognised and knew. Not many of the old greats left now. RIP.
  18. Being a bit of a reactionary, it seems to me that embracing the cyber age is tantamount to wandering along with your wallet hanging out of your back pocket or the ladies having an open handbag on their arm.
  19. There is a sign on a bank of the Norfolk Broads which reads, ' Please Do Not Throw Stones At This Sign'.
  20. I remember years ago having an argument with a teacher. He said he belonged to a group looking to preserve local dialects. When I asked if that included the Nottingham accent, he said no, we were badly spoken. I wonder where the distinction is defined.
  21. No problem. Just smack 'em one with your abacus.
  22. Computers, texting and so on. In Shakespeare's day the vocabulary was far broader than it is now. Like getting old I suppose. As the years pass, things shrink!
  23. Ah! Memories of of the clinic at Players School!!! Both my parents had all their teeth out as a matter of course and I think this was fairly common in that generation. The Americans are sometimes heard speaking disparagingly of we Brits' teeth and from my own experience I think the school dentist put lots of people off from visiting a dentist in later life.
