  1. I have fond memories of the arboretum but the last time I was there must be nigh on 60 years ago. Relating it to what is happening round here, are the powers that be looking for somewhere to build more houses? Just a thought.
  2. I should never have come on the net. I knew there'd be a catch in it.
  3. I was once involved with teaching Arabs in this country and I agree with Blondie in that our own laws should be strictly adhered to as we are expected to adhere to those overseas. It is also apparent that overseas visitors do not respect their own laws set by their own religion whilst visiting us.
  4. I think we shouldn't carp about this and perhaps it's time to fin -ish.
  5. It's a world of barriers. Ageism; sexism; racial discrimination; youth / age; class; religious bias; What a sad world we live in.
  6. That will be because people keep chipping in and frittering away their time.
  7. Stupid jokes!!! I shall switch off my herring aid. Contributers should know their plaice!
  8. If the powers that be are so concerned about plastic bags, they should turn their attention to items being 'over packaged'.
  9. I've enjoyed all those mentioned plus some of today's; 'Not Going Out' and the 'IT Crowd' amongst them.
  10. I've just read a very good book, 'Greasepaint & Cordite', which describes the role of ENSA and other groups who entertained the troops during WWII. There are many tales and my favourite is of Tommy Cooper who on guard duty one night fell asleep as he stood leaning on his rifle. The duty officer and sergeant came and found him in this position. Cooper saw them through half closed eyes, thought quickly and saying, 'Amen' opened his eyes. He got away with it. Anyone else done such a thing?
  11. 'We will consult with the people of +++++++ to see what they consider the best way forward'. (Mind you, we won't listen to what they say).
  12. I remember on the top deck of the old buses there used to be a sign, 'No Spitting'. Smoking used to be allowed on that deck then but I never realized people went up there to spit.
  13. I got confused some time ago when I read that Maggie Thatcher was going to Bancock.
  14. I wonder when the drinking of alcohol in pubs' will be banned.
  15. When in the RAF I went on a short introduction to computers course at Blandford Forum. I didn't like them much then and I don't now but the interesting thing was the pre-course reading - 'The Ladybird Book Of Computers', which was very useful. Ours were delivered openly for all to see but the Group Captain's was delivered in a plain brown wrapper, a distiction of a sort usually reserved for pornography.
  16. A valid point was made on the T.V. last night. A 'foreign' car was the subject of the research and findings of the U.S.A. - American cars, e.g. Ford or Chrysler, were not investigated. It was said on the T.V. that our tests are more stringent (?) but this could be the opening of a mighty can of worms.
  17. Anybody use Brylcreem like Dennis Compton? You can still get the stuff.
  18. She left us with quiet and private dignity deserving great respect. RIP.
  19. For reasons I still can't recall I once bought an alpenstock in Wales and asked the young lady assistant to wrap it. Her face reflected her thought process and went blank and once in a record shop in Liverpool a raucous back ground music was playing. I asked how it sounded being played the right way round and the assistant was quite offended.

#15 I see nothing wrong with this statement. I, along with others, have often been called a Dic------.! No, let's keep it clean as Lizzie M suggests
  21. You have to be careful with compliments as you do with agreeing with people. As she climbed a set of stairs I once heard a lady say, "I need the exercise". "I can see that", I said, and she wasn't pleased. I was only agreeing with her though!
  22. RAF Newton in the fifties were the airshows I remember best.
  23. I suppose many on here have taken an oath of allegiance at sometime or other and it includes allegiance to the royals, the country. and other overseas elements. As far as I'm concerned, in a league table of priorities, the country and its people would be first every time.
  24. #48 Whatever else may be said about the royals, they are not like the rest of society.
