  1. Well I found this article which refers to JB Armstrong being the owners of Armstrong's Mill... http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/Flood-damaged-track-new-outlet/story-11636936-detail/story.html But I still don't know if the name is a coincidence or if they changed it from something else when they moved in.
  2. Does anyone know if the old textile mill in Ilkeston called Armstrong's Mill had a name before the JB Armstrong company moved in? Or has it always been called that and is there a tie up between the company and the original owner?
  3. Amazing that twenty years later I was taught by the same two men... Slater - we called him Doug - was my house master. By that time RK was taught by a Mr Hamer.
  4. Just a word of warning.... Rushcliffe Borough Council has changed the way you buy tickets for pay and display car parks. You now have to enter the digits from your car registration and there is also an option to buy an advance ticket for the evening period. It is quite easy to press the wrong button while you are trying to get it to accept your car reg digits (especially if you only have one digit) or if you are trying to get your money back to start again. There is also the added pressure of some know it all behind you who starts pressing buttons on your behalf or of you have a toddler with
  5. There are signs on some buses I've seen that say that the driver has a testing kit to identify anyone that might spit at them.
  6. My grand parents lived on Cinderhill Road and my mum used to take me on the playground at Bulwell Bogs. I can remember a rectangular climbing frame that looked as if it was made up of scaffolding tubes... and quite a long fall onto concrete - non of that bark chippings or rubber flooring in them days LOL!
  7. On the 77 bus the other day and the young girl on the stop announcement system was doing a grand job until we got to Boden Street. I spent my formative years in Radford and went to Bentinck Primary. We went swimming at Boden Street Baths. Everyone I knew pronounced Boden as if it was spelt Bowden. The voice on the bus said Boddun. She may be right but it just sounded wrong. Anyone know how it should be pronounced and where the name came from?
  8. Thanks bamber - good work! My old Latin teacher Mr Osborne would be most impressed.
  9. I saw a notice on the board in the Victoria Centre Market. It says that they are desperately seeking someone to sell mushy peas, seafood etc in the Market. Must say it's not been the same since the original stall closed down...
  10. I also posted the song on a Latin translation forum... No luck as yet. Either it's a very hard thing to translate or the Google translation is spot on after all! LOL
  11. Yeah looked at BabelFish first - doesn't do Latin though as far as I can see - it really just specialises in Double Dutch...
  12. I got one - not on eBay but on Amazon. This is a real laugh because my company actually printed it and I designed the front cover. Anyway, below are the complete lyrics: Carmen Paviorem Una voce concinamus omnes Paviores. Nutricis virorum nostrae scholae laudatores. Remo, pila, pede, caestu internos certantes. Crescimus in vires mentem. Artibus firmantes. Scholae tamen neque nostrum affectamus laudem. Ludis omnibus et pensis aspernantes fraudem. Ut in schola sic per annos posteros vivamus: Republicae non nobis semper consulamus. Does anyone have an accurate translation of the whole s
  13. There is another Tesco store being fitted out on Alfreton Road in the old YES car showrooms. The bus route I use most is the 77 and, including this one, there are at least four Tescos on the route - five if you include the one down from Angel Row which I think is just visible from the upper deck. There was a rumour that the new building on the corner of Aspley Lane and Melbourne Road was going to be let out to Tesco but maybe it fell through.
  14. Yes but there's a strong possibility that it wil be folding soon...
  15. Anyone know what's happening down at the Runner? There have been hand written signs in the windows for some weeks now saying. "Opening Soon". I'm wondering if it's ever going to be a live music venue again? Andrew
  16. Can't get my head round this one... Only the gullible need apply Unless it's just a spiritual knocking shop... Andrew
  17. I got online with AOL with one of those discs but wish I hadn't bothered. The email used to be the best there was but I soon found that I was drowning in spam. I moved over to virtually spam free google mail. I did log on to my old AOL account recently after a year away and found I had over 2,000 unread messages - 99.9% spam.
  18. I was going to buy a film scanner to digitise my 35mm slides but bought a slide duplicator instead. I have been getting really good results when I use it on s Canon 300 D. There is a slot on either side so that you can feed strips of film through instead of having to mount individual slides: I have photographed some old black and white negatives this way and just inverted the image in Photoshop. I got mine off Amazon - here's a link if anyone's intersested: slide Duplicator
  19. I will always remember passing a seller on my way home from school in the 70s - he always seemed to be shouting, "Post seven - no lates tonight!" Those were the days when its adverts were in alphabetical order and it made good chip paper the next day.
  20. It was recently the City Kebab House and is next but one to the Thurland Hall.
  21. In the 70's me and my mates used to frequent this establishment and some of us, including me, even worked there - as table clearers and washer uppers. Does anyone remember this place that was located on Thurland Street - opposite the NatWest bank I think it was. And did anyone by any chance ever take a photo of the place? Andy
  22. I went to Bentinck Primary and was in the school football team. We played our home games on the pitch next to the soap factory. I will always remember the big clouds of white steamy fumes that would be emitted at random intervals engulfing quite a sizeable part of the pitch. The smell will also live with me forever - LOL
