  1. Bazalways, only soft drinks were sold at the 'Locarno'.
  2. Hi Katyjay, that's an old Nottingham saying you've written @ #88: 'Well, blow me down' - good to see it again. Hi Michael, @ #89; I too used to visit the 'Locarno in the early 60's'. No place like it: when you stood on the steps outside, the sound of 'The Four Seasons' blasting out with 'Walk Like A Man' and luring you into this enchanting Palace.
  3. Whilst in the City the other day, I fancied something tasty for my tea; so I popped into 'Marks & Spencer's Food hall but I soon popped out, the prices in there!! I went over to the 'Pound Shop' across the way, where I bought: A 2 litre container of milk ..................£1 A Jar of 'Maxwell House' coffee..........£1 A big bag of unrefined brown sugar...£1 A pack of lean, middle bacon.............£1 When I reached home, I deserved a drink so I made myself a frothy coffee with the milk, 'Maxwell House' and brown sugar. Verdict: Delicious For Dinner I made a Bacon Casserole (added
  4. Compo, how absolutely beautiful what you have done with your photos: made them into a Gallery - wish I was as clever. How kind of you to put these images on 'Nottstalgia'. My favourites amongst your collection are: 'The Fernery' 'Autumn Colours Just Beginning To Show' 'Light in the Wood' (Even the one: 'Wood Pigeon Deterrent' is so unusual and beautiful - the colours sing.) PS: I too love Autumn in the garden: 'Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness'..................(John Keats).
  5. Bilbraborn, your PM is your Personal Messenger: go to the top of the page and you will see a motif of a small envelope, press on it and Hey Presto! PS: must admit, it took me some time to notice mine!
  6. If you want to know about 'Living On A Budget', then ask / get in touch with me; I've had years of experience. PS: I quite enjoy the challenge, it brings into play my Imagination, which is a good thing; but sometimes it can be tedious, having to hold on 'til my next pension is paid into the bank. PPS: Forgot to mention that I refuse to live on Benefits!
  7. A bit of grumpiness adds character to a person - not too much though! PS: Imagine if a person was nice all of the time, how boring he/she would be and how they could be taken advantage of................
  8. Mary1947, thanks for reminding me of the cottage loaf hairstyle - real laughable, as I imagine what one looked like. PS: I loved making cottage loaves in cookery, also mini cottage loaves that were cobs really.
  9. I don't mind Charity Shops as long as they smell pleasantly fragrant upon opening the door.......................... There's one at Oakham that is a splendid example of what to aim for when running one; I thought I'd stepped into a Fancy Goods/ Gift Shop and was most surprised when the friendly cashier informed me that I was buying from a Charity Shop! PS: So it can be done...........
  10. Has there been any mention yet of the old style Jotters that we as kids were given at the beginning of each Autumn term?: Real thick they were - lots of lined paper (although cheap) - colour blue; and at the back of the Jotter was a page of weights, cubic volumes, lengths, tables and other bits of interesting info. to make life easier being a kid in the new classroom.
  11. What about the word: 'Fank que' (thank you)? I find this really irritating, considering that when I was at school, the teacher would take time with us making sure that the class pronounced 'th' properly.
  12. Here's an Old Saying that's stood me in good steed: 'Never believe what you hear; and only ever half believe what you see.'
  13. Compo, see my post @: 11.33 - 'On Being Old'.
  14. As a teenager during the 60's, I wondered why 'The Fab Four' had written the song: 'When I'm 64'; they couldn't have been much older than me at the time. Later, I found out that the group had based their lyrics on a Buddhist philosophy: that when a person is 64 yrs of age, then they should know what LIFE is all about - in other words, one can sit back and observe. Well, I'm 66 yrs now and over the last 10 years my life has been tough, I'll not sit back and observe: I need to know the answer to some questions - about what happened to me...................... 'Rage, rage against the dyin
  15. Good to see you back with the photography Compo @ #1- Super Shot.
  16. I certainly won't be paying 5p for a Supermarket plastic bag but will certainly miss them for putting my everyday rubbish in! I know I have some old, shopping bags somewhere....................................just couldn't part with them.............................
  17. Wished I'd had the foresight to have saved some of my school books but to be honest I was relieved to leave school: the constant hard work, plus the cold sores through being run down - sitting O' levels. Even more so, I wished I'd saved my School Magazines because I was a regular contributor; would be nice to be able to look back on some of my early written work.
  18. No, it certainly wasn't me in the car with David Commo. @ #6, I was sincerely thanking DavidW for his good old-fashioned gentlemanly courteousness in putting on 'Nottstalgia', valuable research information for the benefit of Nottstalgians.
  19. Rescatorette, you're many times welcome on 'Nottstalgia' at the mention of the name 'Serge Gainsbourg' - a true musical genius. PS: 'Long live Serge, long live Serge (where's the French flag for waving).
  20. Hi Anna (Rescatorette), welcome to 'Nottstalgia' - a treasure trove for writers. Regarding the Byron cinema, the last picture show I saw at the place was: 'Dr Dolittle', during the latter part of the 70's (took my children). Good luck with your research, also your forthcoming leaflet on the Byron; I will be in touch if I can help in any way.
  21. Meant to get out on my bus pass today, being as it's 'Heritage Day'; but wind was too blustery for me, so I've been taking it easy watching my 'Goodfellas' CD. Excellent film by Director: Martin Scorcese, wonderful 60's music, film coasts along, slickly directed - a favourite of mine.
  22. ERRATA: I should have written 'shears', last word, last line @ #162. No other excuse, except that it must have been around my bed time............... PS: watched the Andy Williams show again tonight, courtesy BBC I Player; he sang most of his memorable hits - here was a fellow who could truly sing. Can well recommend 'Andy Williams Sings Duets', also on I Player; Andy sings with the greatest: Tony Bennett, Pearl Bailey, Shirley Bassey, Sammy Davis Jnr to name but a few.........................oh! and Dusty Springfield.
  23. I was treated to a real good night of music last night 'on the telly': First it was Elton John, accompanied at the end of the show by his friend of 50 years, Rod Stewart. Followed by 'easy listening' on BBC4. And to finish off I was treated to Andy Williams for a couple of hours. Wasn't all 'Rock and Roll' but I got my fair shares - Whoops! Sorry! I should have said sheers!
  24. Compo, I expect your cabbage (on the top) will be Gargantuan by the end of the month!
  25. All this talk of the writer JM Barrie and his links to Nottingham; did you know that the writer Graham Greene (likewise a journalist) was converted to Roman Catholicism in St Barnabas' Cathedral, Derby Road?
