  1. Re the farm....my parents grew up on Sneinton Dale (I grew up in Bakersfields) & they always called it Betsy's Farm. No one's mentioned the wool/babywear shop...the cake shop was Lambert & Ones (I think) although we didn't have bought cake because it was too expensive
  2. I've since found out that the newspaper made a mistake....someone has looked at an trade directory from the 1860s & the pub was actually on High Cross St.....where was that, exactly, please ?
  3. Woops, sorry....just seen this thread & I've started a separate one under Sport (???? newbies). Has anybody heard of a nineteenth century prizefighter from Nottingham called Asher ? I'm enquiring on behalf of a lady from the USA....Her ancestor emigrated at the beginning of the twentieth century when he was around 19, but was said to have spent a couple of years as a prizefighter. If anyone can help, or tell me if I can find out if this is true or not, I'd be very grateful Thanks
  4. Don't know if this is the right place, but I haven't had much luck with Family History sites, so maybe someone with local boxing interests would be a better bet. Is there anyone here who has an interest/knows someone who has an interest in local boxing history, please ? I'm asking on behalf of an American who has an ancestor named Asher who was supposed to have been a prizefighter in Nottingham. He left for the US as a young man at the beginning of the twentieth century. Any information/suggestions as to where I could find out if this were true welcome Thanks
  5. Does anyone know exactly where this was on Bottle Lane, please ? I know it was there in 1858 (from a newspaper report....I'm not that old), but it seems to have changed its name shortly thereafter. Did it become the Queen Elizabeth ? (now also gone) or was it one of the other pubs on the road ? Thank you
