  1. Yes, I think it was only when Amy Johnson went missing in fog over the Thames estuary that folk realized what a lonely, dangerous job they did, and did so well. RIP Mary the last of the 'other Few'.
  2. Thanks DW for confirmation & picture, I'll pass it on to my uncle asap. I know what he'll say"B----- hell, spectacular way to get rid of a few fleas & bugs". But as things turned out it made for a very realistic drill and a show for the 'natives'. Margie, it was quite a lot before your time! CU on Tuesday.
  3. Just managed to contact my last remaining uncle, age 94, he confirmed my grandparents lived in Caanan St. and my father & several brothers & 1 sister being born there. later moving to Albion St. (bottom left on map) He told me that during the demolition the work stopped as the men were taking too much "livestock" home with them whilst the rats & mice were also causing problems! He also confirmed a childhood memory I have was a 'true' one, apparently the council set the Marsh on fire one Sunday morning to deal with the infestation, The University Air Squadron took advantage of this
  4. Sign of the times Cliff, I bet there'll be a dozen or more houses squeezed on the site as some of those Victorian houses do occupy some land. The height of the ceilings don't make for economy when turned into flats, sorry, apartments!
  5. Yes I remember the BRSA club on Wilford Lane as one of the better bits to follow nationalization was sports facilities for ALL the staff, not just the salaried section! With another fireman,Derek Bacon, we & others resurrected the LMR Rifle club with rifles & equipment provided by the BRSA. As secretary I was on the committee which bought No.32 Wilford Lane, the chairman was Dvr. Ted Croll but the rest of the "officials"were from the salaried grade. It proved very popular with all ranks with a full house at weekends and particularly on 'matchdays'. I lived this side of Trent Bridge and
  6. Hello Oz, Yes I do know these caves as during WW2 a bloke (Sav Davis ?) chopped & bundled firewood sticks there but I don't remember car spraying there. In any case the Hermitage is the other side of the bridge although there may be another cave behind the houses used as an air raid shelter but no vehicle access.
  7. Sorry Wayne, I''m a Sneinton lad (!) but don't remember any ''arches' on the hermitage.
  8. The download/print program for my Sony DSC-W800 camera “Playmemories Home” does not work on my updated W10 computer. My son in law found me an alternative via File Explorer but a recent surge of MS updates has removed it from my desktop, I don’t want to ask my son in law again (he will say it’s my fault) so if anyone can help I’d be much obliged
  9. I can’t remember being prompted by the “Mirror” headline into taking this “My Home” photo but after stirring the ‘little grey cells’ the sequence was remembered! First, extend the tripod-remove camera from e r case-attach flash unit to camera (pre hot shoe!)- screw camera & flash to tripod-check view through eyelevel view finder- press button to open camera front extending bellows/lens mount-connect flash cable to synchro plug on lens mount then insert flash bulb into socket- set focus distance- set aperture- set shutter speed to 1/25th.-& ‘cock’ the shutter. The pneumatic ‘delayed a
  10. Hi Ian, nice pics. did you have access to the East Block roof for the 3rd. picture? I posted a couple some time ago looking the other way taken from the Print works roof. (I was in the Litho dept. for 12 years, 1980-92)
  11. Catfan, are the gent's toilets on the left now a 'fast food' outlet?
  12. Well said Jill Sparrow, Chulla would have loved your poem! Regretfully I won't be at the funeral but I will be raising a glass of the amber liquid elevenish on the 18th. to the memory of a truly Super Nottstalgian. RIP Chulla
  13. Have I clicked on the wrong Postimage Link?
  14. 3 Of us ignored the weather forecast last weekend but put a shovel in the boot, just in case, and went off to the model show at Warwick. More for 'garden layouts' this time like this "Jubilee", just another model till you look in the cab to realize what a fine piece of engineering it is https://postimg.org/image/5a9bcids5/ https://postimg.org/image/ut1npihwl/ Quite a few American diesels but those box cars seem out of place indoors https://postimg.org/image/gmlwuehd1/ and, of course, a few novelties like this "Leggo layout" https://postimg.org/image/kvqmwjxh1/
  15. Well worth a try, but will the councils &/or public take it on ? It looks like we (the people!) will have to make more effort at home too!
  16. Sorry senior moment! A Very Merry Christmas to Everyone and ATB for 2018. Albert
  17. I've just reminded a bloke in Oz that i may have been with his Father on Christmas day 1947 with the RM in Malta GC. We were 'duty troop', provide the Guard & all fatigues with 6 of us assigned to the Officers Mess, it was after their party the previous night, all those bottles & glasses to empty & wash! we were as p----d as newts by 11, the coffee laced with rum didn't help but somehow we managed to see the Sergeants take over the guard so the men could sit down together to be served Xmas dinner by the Colonel & Officers, very enjoyable but passed out on my bed afterwards so
  18. I'd never heard of or seen a "Shay" loco until i saw the 16mm model earlier this year but now I've found this You Tube clip of 5 of the 'real' things but what the hell are they burning, oily rags?
  19. Nice one Chulla, 10 years before my railway time! 10 hour shifts & 'disposing' of the engine was the norm. in those days but a pity the 'preparation' of the engine wasn't shown as it involves the driver squeezing up to oil the inside motion. I could be wrong but I think the LH side rod should be @ 5 oclock, the RH rod would be @1 oclock to put the 'inside' bits forward to allow the driver space between the firebox/ashpan & the bigend etc. Still a tight fit and woe betide the cleaners if the driver got dirty! A standing joke was if the driver had a bit of a 'belly' and got stuck the fir
  20. I got 'wee-wee'd' off last Wednesday evening after the Roebuck meetup. As I'm no longer driving I have to catch the 21.19 tram from the O M Sq. to change to the 21.50 bus at Bulwell bus station, an hourly service at this time of night. The tram duly arrived showing Hucknall on the destination head light as did all the inside indicators & the lady on the tannoy repeatedly told us the tram was going to Hucknall! But on arriving at Shipstone St. the driver announced "The tram is terminated" & came out of his cab to be met with a torrent of abuse, particularly me as I would miss my bus.
  21. Now your'e talking Doctors, we joined Dr. Bartram's practice in 1965 on what is now the bus station, sliding along a hard wooden form until it was your turn. We've stayed with his successors through different premises and numerous doctors, how times have changed! Now it's the 8 am phone lottery to get an appointment which can take some time as the same receptionists are dealing with the queue waiting at the doors for the same reason!
  22. Thanks Brian & Plantfit for the info. & pic. as I say ,no 'mainline loco's' but the variety of tank loco's was amazing.
  23. or the spelling, I knew I shouldn't have had that 2nd. glass with my dinner! I cropped "No.5" to show the unusual drive but didn't "save" it so lets try again!
  24. No idea Plantfit, it was just on one of the many trade stands. Her''s the other 2 pics! I've nut sussed this 'Postimage' yet.
