  1. True. Here's another which Pic the Past say is 1967. You can match these two blocks with the layout on the rear photo in #18. And on the extreme right of this picture, you can see the entrance steps which are shown on the earlier illustration.
  2. And a few photos of it. This is a rear view from Windmill Lane And from the 1830s, looking at the front from Carlton Road.
  3. Surprising how many of those places have survived. Nobody goes up those alleys because they don't lead anywhere; you have to turn round and come back out the same way. So people see you coming out of the alley and wonder what you've been up to in a dead-end.
  4. 50 years ago I was sitting on the floor at Greencroft Junior School, Clifton. I think most of us are in a school photo where everyone looks like this.
  5. I think (not certain) this is what went up when the Mechanics came down. But it didn't last very long.
  6. Here's a couple of photos, allegedly when it was a hotel. http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM006562&prevUrl= http://images.francisfrith.com/c10/450/33/W437008.jpg As you cansee, it looks remarkably similar to the way it is now. Externally, there is almost no difference between the building as a hotel and the building as Rushcliffe offices.
  7. My first map (post #2) was 1901. This is from around the 1830s (possibly before the additions made in 1829 mentioned by bubblewrap). Not really enough detail to identify any differences, although the surrounding area has obviously changed.
  8. Welcome to Nottstalgia caeperthi. I think you may have found a subject which hasn't been mentioned here before. Quite a few people may not know the place you are referring to, so here's a clue. Bottom end of Carlton Road. Dakeyne Street - which is to the south of the Asylum grounds - still exists; as do many of the other roads in the area.
  9. This. This was the Mechanics Institute/ Cinema, extending all the way back up on the left of the photo. Look at what is in this location today - isn't progress wonderful.
  10. I agree it's difficult to tell. In the new version (on the right) there is some re-designed concrete seating and the addition of a few split-level bits to add to everyone's enjoyment. To be fair, when you are there it seems a lot better than the old version. But that wasn't difficult.
  11. This is what it now looks like, with the council attempts to hide the earlier mess. See the photos in post #23 for the earlier version of this location.
  12. Compo, I think it might be this one http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=11520&hl=byron
  13. They can't win. Complaints when they do something, and complaints when they don't. Look at the examples of people who think that the law should be observed by everyone but themselves......... "Yes, but when I did it, that was different."
  14. March 15th was the last time he logged on, although I believe mick2me PM'd him sometime later.
  15. I'm not sure if this is old, or maybe still in use, but referring to a torch as a flashlight.
  16. All my relatives did that! I'm not sure it would still have worked with digital watches and clocks.
  17. In the very early days with the first building (the two lines directly under the word "Station"), apparently that is exactly what they did. Trains coming from Lincoln went past the station and then reversed back in. That is why the second part of the early station was built (the lower building, alongside the lines to/from Lincoln).
  18. My grandma, when she was still around, always referred to the pavement as the causeway. Never heard it used by anyone else since.
  19. My first stop is the BBC website for news Then several transport and motoring--related sites. then a few connected with music. My main 'oddity' is that everyday I look at Rightmove to see what housing is on sale in the Nottingham area. Dunno why. And, at some point, Nottstalgia.
  20. First came across it in a book in West Bridgford Library. Next time I'm in there I'll try to remember to check what it was. Good question! On the examples I have, I can't see any more information to answer.
  21. Finally found one, to answer a few questions. This is from the mid-1840s, showing the early railway station in Nottingham, when the lines went over Carrington Street on a level crossing, before the construction of the viaduct taking the road over the railway (1869). The first station is the northern part of the building; the slightly longer building to the south of the original was added a few years later to accommodate the lines coming from Lincoln. Other bits worth pointing out (some of it has already been mentioned here) I've marked Station Street, and on the corner is the earlier
  22. Same thing happened on Meadows Way, the road which goes round the Meadows parallel to Queen's Drive. Massive number of mature trees were cut down and replaced with concrete and tarmac. Just when the Meadows was finally being hidden, you can see it again.
  23. I have just been returned to normality by someone with Admin powers re-setting my account. I think the same may have to happen for other people as well.
  24. LizzieM, in trying to solve your problem I think I've just put myself in the same hole which I can't get out of either. I am also in the light blue/black mode, and I can't get out of it !!
