There's been a lack of activity around here for a few days, and to underline the point, yesterday the biggest contribution came from a spammer who made 24 posts in one session.

I'm struggling to take the Menzies story seriously. If someone invented the incident in a novel they'd be told it was ridiculously unbelievable.

I remember that, but it's not one which comes to mind when anyone mentions The Animals.

People of a certain age might remember "Let's Go to San Francisco' by the Flowerpot Men in 1967, who were just a group of session musicians. They recorded a few other songs but none were successful. One was 'In a Moment of Madness'...which was later released by White Plains...although it was the same people. I'd forgotten how good it was.

That figure explains why car insurance is so high these days.
Imagine a car involved in a minor shunt and the front end being slightly bent; if one headlight costs £1k how much would the whole front end cost (eg. radiator, bumper, grille, etc).

Every time Truss speaks, you think she can't get any madder..........but she always does.

A small area in West Bridgford was hit by a tornado yesterday and caused a spectacular amount of damage in around 10 seconds.

It's greatly to their credit that they could still perform in such embarrassingly bad conditions.
A good demonstration of how pop music was treated in those days. The programme and organisation was in the hands of middle-aged men in suits who had no idea or understanding of what was happening.

I remember another very high class shop on Long Row, I think, where Muriel's clothes came from but, again, the name escapes me.
Presumably on Long Row somewhere between King St/ClumberStreet ?
And the name Peter Barrie vaguely rings a bell; I probably walked past the place many times, obviously without going in.

Granby Street was roughly the stretch of MMW from Friar Lane to Park Row.

The street pattern has changed, but I think Smalleys have moved several times......although always staying around the same area.
This is the junction of Park Row/Derby Road these days ..... https://maps.app.goo.gl/dFKPiEGMhNmpvNqKA

Crikey. Didn't that used to be part of Baker & Plumb?
When it looked like this....
And another version of Smalleys shop ....

The shop is run by Mamie Smalley, 80, her daughter Jill Pearson and grand-daughter Jane
Paradise, with their friend Celia Radcliffe, and they recently turned the wholeI wonder if there's a connection with Smalleys, whose are still operating on Derby Road, albeit on a reduced scale. (They used to be further down near Chapel Bar).

It’s called Long Covid. Has anyone heard of this or even had this problem.
I think Long Covid has been around almost as long as the original version; I've seen many references to it over the years.
This is the NHS info on it...... https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/covid-19/long-term-effects-of-covid-19-long-covid/

There's an even bigger set of old Clifton photos here - https://www.nottinghampost.com/news/local-news/gallery/unseen-pictures-clifton-early-days-3138772 ....
and one of the photos is from the late 1950s and shows a collection of pushchairs outside a row of shops. Pity it's not closer because I could be in one of those pushchairs.

Looking at old photos of Nottingham, those signs seemed to be on every street corner.....and many of them are still there, although they're now faded and weather-beaten.

The Blue Coat School
A new school is about to be erected, on Mansfield Road, for which ground has been purchased.
And this is the 'new' building on Mansfield Road/Bluecoat St. I'm not sure of its current ownership or use.

Bluecoat are taking over the world. They've grabbed what used to be at the bottom end of Maid Marian Way....which may be what you're referring to.
-
The basis of MGB is still there but is now called Bluecoat Wollaton Academy, with entrances on Harrow Road and Sutton Passeys Crescent. It's been modernised a lot, but underneath it all is the original 1950s buildings.

Another possible contender would be Margaret Glenn Bott near Crown Island.

Running through that lot shows an interesting cultural change.
In the first few years all the artists look like identikit younger versions of older people....dressing like their parents. It's only when the Rolling Stones appear in 1965 that young people start having their own identity which doesn’t involve copying what went before. (even the Beatles continued to wear suits and ties in those early years).
Where's everybody gone !!

As has been said before, if someone doesn’t like a particular thread - or topic - the solution is to ignore it and move on to the next thing.
Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a facility to automatically ignore a thread - although curiously you can set preferences to ignore a particular person.
I doubt if the Politics thread puts off newcomers, because most people finding Nottstalgia for the first time won’t even see it. They get here by searching a particular topic (eg. Drury Hill, or Victoria Station, or Berridge School), which leads them to the relevant thread.
The chances of a general political search (eg Starmer, or Thatcher) leading them to NS are microscopic.
