  1. I know how to hang the flag the right way up too.. which is more than can be said for many.. My garden is a bit awkward in one sense. It's South facing, which is what I want, because I love being out in the sun. But the corollary (big word for this time of day..) is that the 'back' fence is North facing and it has two dark corners with the side fences. The garden is basically a square, about 30ft. I have a 'patio' of sorts, then a lawn and borders around 3-4 feet wide all around. Not very imaginative, but relatively easy maintenance. It's just difficult to get anything very e
  2. It's always possible BK, but I only developed the problem after returning from Mexico. I was the only one out of four who swam in the pools, in the sea and also in an underground cenote. I also 'hammered' the Sun bathing more than them, but was already well tanned before I went' Allergy tests show no particular reactions to pollen or anything else much. Just an indication of a massive allergic response to something. Interestingly, I've just discovered that many people in North America are allergic to Juniper pollen. I'm not sure there's much Juniper growing in the Yucatan,
  3. Didn't know that Brew. Isn't Oil of Bergamot what they use to flavour Earl Grey Tea? Anyway if my skin doesn't clear up soon I could try rolling about in the borders for a bit....
  4. It's a great pic. At that time I had about 4 years to wait to be born and Southglade was I believe only 'footings' until well after WW2. I doubt many who live on there now have the first clue as to what went on way back. I don't think there's anyone left from my time still living on Southglade.
  5. Hello again Pauline, I hope you are still visiting the site. Apologies for not replying to this sooner but I've been a bit occupied with other things. Sorry to hear that Olive has left us. I can still see her in my mind. Harold too, when we were much younger, probably in the late 1950s. There was a bush in the hedgerow pretty much opposite your house, which we could stand inside. It had assorted broken branches which we could press into service as control levers, triggers etc., and it was variously a spaceship, a fighter plane, a bomber and pretty much everything else. Those days on Bes
  6. My Dad had a 350 Bullet just post war. Very nearly died as a result of an accident on it. I had a 250 Crusader Sport in the 60s
  7. This is more of a story, but with a medical theme. Forgive me if I've told it before. It was initially quite comic, but later tragic. Around 1970, I often went to the Grosvenor in Mansfield Rd on a Sunday lunchtime, with an acquaintance called Phil. We loved the 'craic' in there, and the Steak Sandwiches. This particular Sunday there were a couple of chaps in there who I somehow knew were on a 'pass out' , or had 'sneaked out', from Mapperley Hospital (Somebody told me or whatever.. I really don't recall.) Either way, one of these guys was massive. He towered over me
  8. Better day than I've had for about seven weeks. Even a few hours of partial relief from this b****y itch was bliss. Then got around to planting up some new stuff in the borders. They got very neglected last year while I dug up half the garden for drainage work. Earlier in the year I lifted and divided a few elderly perennials such as Red Valerian, a Purple Scabious, a Helenium, Monarda (Bergamot) etc. Another border had to be used as a temporary dumping ground for spoil from the drainage trench, so only the bigger tougher plants survived, mainly a red Penstemon a few Lobelia
  9. Well the itch returned this evening as per usual, but with a lot less ferocity. Here's hoping it will be a bit better tomorrow.
  10. Re: Cigarettes. Long before I gave up smoking, one Doc said that he thought Nicotine was a 'fantastic' drug if only it wasn't so addictive. But then aren't they all? Those of us who have had Heroin (coyly described by its chemical name 'Diamorphine') for heart attacks etc., will all know what a fabulously relaxed, warm and untroubled feeling it gives. Sadly not one that can be repeated often without severe consequences. Same as with Tranquillisers such as Valium. Antidepressants on the other hand are horrible things in my experience. Even things like very low dose Amitryptilen
  11. Thanks for all queries and suggestions. re: my Itch'. No Cats or Dogs here for over 20 years. After another consultation the Doc came up with three things. 1. A short course of the corticosteroid Prednisolone at 20 mg per day for three days. He said this might well calm things down a bit but the effect might only last as long as the course. First dose has already calmed down the redness and some of the itch. 2. He's going to consult an online advice line they have access to. 3. He's referring me to Dermatology. Finally, he also sai
  12. No idea Margie but we tend to be reasonably fortunate here c.f. many other places. Just at Doc's now waiting for my 9:00 appt.
  13. Probably not as painful as Albert's condition, but as I'm sitting here typing, my dreaded 'itch', is in full spate. 'Itch' isn't really the word, because at present it's like a million wasp stings a minute, mostly (this time) around my right arm and shoulder, with odd contributions from my left shoulder and thighs. It can also be a tingling or burning and I've also noticed odd little joint and muscle pains. The hives come and go, mostly on arms, but can be anywhere. It is more or less bearable during the day, but really kicks in after my evening meal and peaks until I give up an
  14. Albert, I wish you the very best outcome from all of this.
  15. Just on a technicality, it was never really a 'level crossing', in the Highway Code sense or at least not a public one. We crossed there all the time, and rail traffic was very infrequent after the mid 60's, if any at all. . It was a locked gate used by Jarve Goddard from Southglade Farm, whilst the line was still in use. If I recall correctly, it became a bit more 'casual' later, before finally closing to traffic. I should add that I lived on Southglade Road from the early 1950s until around 1970.
  16. No Enigma, I mean where I said, but I don't doubt that other inaccurate signs exist..
  17. I recall often walking past Atlas Spares on Park Lane. (Assuming that was the name of the one on the right before you got down to Fords and Whiteley -Read) I have an abiding memory of what we used to call a 'Shooting Brake' being squeezed into the tapered corner at the top end. And later, being devastated to see a Vincent Black Shadow just dumped in there. What a crying shame. My regular 'scrappy', was Henderson's in Boowul, opposite the Horse Shoe. Early 60s it was about 6d a pound for wool, same for aluminium, or cast alloy.. bit more for copper and brass.
  18. Don't know much about tractors, but I have an abiding memory of Jarve Goddard using one when he was still actively managing the two fields opposite Southglade Road. That would probably be around 1952-4. What sticks in my mind is being fascinated by what I suppose was some sort of 'sight glass' attached to the side of the engine. Right side as seen from the driving seat I think. In my memory it seemed to be filled with a greenish coloured liquid. Oil? I thought agricultural diesel was red? Maybe somebody here knows.
  19. And another thing!! I know that the track wasn't fully removed until sometime around 1968/9, because I tripped over a rail or an old rail 'shoe' one night when rushing over the crossing to get down to the 360 Club for a DJ in session.
  20. Does the link go blue if you hover over it? https://photos.app.goo.gl/KdkMToFry1jZuipN9 Any better? Anyway, the point is that someone has erected a sign at the former railway crossing near Gala Bingo/Southglade Road. One blue sign points to Southglade Sports Centre, the other to Hucknall. That's fair enough. Then below are two brown signs. One says 'The Railway line was dismantled sometime between 1940 and 1960.' , which is rubbish. At least a part of the line was still connecting Rigleys Engineering works to the BR network via Moorbridge until 1966
  21. Ok folks. I'll try again. https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipOi_4-7G_XtaxbhMU692GVz4whfrfOaSFERQhoq How's that? I've spoken to my brother and the sign is at the site of the old crossing between the end of Southglade Rd. and Hucknall Rd.
  22. Not sure where to put this... ( Suggestions on a post card not required..) My Brother sent me this picture, which I assume is either at the former rail crossing by the Gala Bingo at the end of Southglade Rd. .. or at one of the other points where Hucknall Rd passes 'cuts' through the former Leen Valley line. https://photos.google.com/album/AF1QipODaKQ6_xkAEILLSnrWrxdgX4DUYHZ6l5rirhSk Now I'm no expert, but even I know that the line closed in the 50s or 60s. But more importantly, this information, down to the exact day, if not the hour, will be known to any number o
  23. Still suffering with 'hives' here. Going on 7 weeks solid now. I wake up with them and go to sleep with them. During the day I can keep them at bay a bit by keeping busy, but they're still there. I've tried numerous creams, lotions and potions. I've tried at least 4 Antihistamines, including what I'm told are the 'strongest'. Nothing has helped. Seen the Doc twice and am seeing him again next Tues, when I expect to be referred for specialist opinion. Can't take much more of this. I itch all over, but mostly on arms, ches
  24. Nonna, you must do what's best for you. I hope things improve for you soon.
  25. Not seen Brew since Saturday.. You OK Brew?
