  1. I recall that an uncle of mine was a boss of some sort at Raglan engineering back in the '50's. I remember him saying that they started exporting lathes to the USA and had to change the name from Little John because the Americans used that word for the loo and they couldn't associate it with a lathe.
  2. Didn't he own 'Just Paul' on Front Street, Arnold as well?
  3. I too knew Stan the cobbler on Winchester St. He was very interested in firearms. I believe he had also been a prison officer and he told me he actually performed some hangings during this time. He always had a good story to tell and I spent many hours listening to him.
  4. I used to live on Sandfield road next to the corner shop. the last occupant of the top lodge was a very old man named Mr Hammond who I believe died there. I think his wife pre deceased him by a few years. As I recall he used to open and close the big wrought iron gates to the park every morning and evening. I think he passed away in the early 1960's but not certain of this now. Every autumn he would collect conkers from the trees at the top end of the park and store them in the old type blue paper sugar bags. He would give us small boys a bag of conkers in return for doing little jobs f
  5. Hello All, Well that’s the last evening meet for the year over and done with. I would like to say thanks to everyone who has attended and helped make this event a success in its first year. Wednesdays car the judges would most like to take home was BeeGeeVinz’s red 300ZXTT The bike the judges would most like to take home was won by a Lambretta scooter with almost as much chrome and mirrors as Vinz’ Z. (I must apologise as I can’t remember the owners name but I think he belonged to the Mansfield Road Runners scooter club. The winning entry ticket was held by Wooley from Club DIORI who

  8. A Mansfield estate agent, Arthur Holder (used) to live in a house opposite the Table Top Tree. He wasn't short of a bob or two and his gardeners used to trim the tree. I doubt he's still alive and wonder if any relatives survive him there, however someone still trims the tree.

  14. yes I have to admit that on the day my botty was going penny-sixpence until cars and bikes started to roll in but in the end it turned out quite well.
  15. The first meet is over (breaths a sigh of relief) and we had over 90 people there. A superb location on a beautiful sunny evening. Some lovely cars on display. Good food, a bar, 2 bands and great company. Next meeting is Wednesday 4 May 2011. See you there?
  16. The boy dun good. but he went and lost it again! If he'd been from Notnum he'd still have it.
  17. I do not consider myself P.C. and I do not object to the phrase "pakki shop" as I'm sure it is in everyday use by those who use these premises. My concern is the qualifier "robbing overpriced" which I find provocative.
  18. I object to the phrase, "a robbing overpriced pakki shop." I am a self employed trader and I buy stuff for my business at the same wholesalers that these people use. Although I don't buy or sell foodstuffs etc I see the prices that they are having to pay and they are rarely cheaper than supermarket prices. Then they have to sell them and make a living within the price band set by the manufacturer. I think they do very well to make a living in competition with the supermarkets and their immense purchasing power. We are never going to overcome the racial divide while you bandy comments l

  21. The Notts police HQ and training school used to be Epperstone Manor until sherwood lodge was built then it became their training school until it was sold. Cadets used to go to ACCFE (Digby) for a one day release course. I think the college is no more. Epperstone Manor still stands and is being converted into posh flats. All the 'new' police buildings have gone. I believe the police sports ground at Carrington was sold many years ago and is probably now housing
  22. I used to live on Sandfield Rd as a child and played on the railway line leading from Daybrook Station to Gedling tunnel. When the line was open we would place 6" nails on it as a train was coming and it would flatten them out into daggers which we could sell at school for 1d. (they were the days)! We regularly used to play on the embankments at the tunnel. When the line was closed they used to store goods waggons on it and we had many dens. As a teenager I used to attend Arnold & Carlton college on Digby Ave (now pulled down)? and used to go on cross country runs through the tunnel.
