  2. Great 2 page review of The Palace and the Punks in todays Notts Evening Post!
  3. The Grey Topper book - The Palace and the Punks is now out! This is England, this is Nottinghamshire, England 1970’s! The incredible true story of the notorious punk venue the Grey Topper - situated in a Nottinghamshire pit village! Where The Stranglers played in 76, The Vibrators, The Ruts, Early Xerox era Adam and the Ants, The Specials, UK Subs, Angelic Upstarts (that ended in a riot), The Members and more! Pre-punk days Glam kings The Sweet played there, as did the Bay City Rollers, Geno Washington, Ben E King, Judas Priest, AC/DC's Brian Johnson when in Geordie and loads more famous nam

  5. Hi Craig I mention the trial in my book about Nottinghamshire club the Grey Topper http://www.angelfire.com/indie/united11/Topper_Cover.JPG http://www.angelfire.com/indie/united11/greytopper.html Out next year, just putting finishing touches to it. Radio Trent used to broadcast from there, in fact a CD by a metal band called Nutz recorded there by Radio Trent has just been released. http://www.marketsquarerecords.co.uk/store/system/store.htm That has me wondering what else might be in the Radio Trent archives from the Grey Topper? If there’s any recordings from 1979 when the likes of Th
  6. Oh just checked text, it was Edwin Starr singing SOS, many thanks
  7. Already have Mick, when first started writing book few years back (was on hold for various reasons) you told me about seeing Geno Washington there, so put that in and website url, great forum !cheers!
  8. That's great Ashley (what's your 2nd name I'll quote you in the book?)Just looking at the Grey Topper booking list for 1975. Yep Judas Priest on there 3 times! And I can tell you they got paid £125 (for the whole band!) or 60% of the attendance figures, so guess they opted for £125 if there was only 8 people there.
  9. I’m a writer from Jacksdale and just putting the finishing touches to a book about the Grey Topper club. Does anyone on here have any memories of the club? http://www.angelfire.com/indie/united11/Topper_Cover.JPG http://www.angelfire.com/indie/united11/greytopper.html Tony

  11. Hi Ashley I’m a writer from Jacksdale and am just putting the finishing touches to a book about the Grey Topper http://www.angelfire.com/indie/united11/Topper_Cover.JPG You put the following on the forum ‘Saw Judas Priest at Grey Topper Jacksdale, full light show, the big gong etc, were about 8 people there, later after becoming multi millionaires saw a feature on them in NME I think, guess what was "worst gig ever" according to them!’ Wondered if you could tell me a bit more about this? What was the full light show? And what was the big gong? Sounds like you’re saying they put on a stadi

  13. Thanks Mick. That's great about Edwin Starr I'll add that to the story too. Pictures of inside the Grey Topper are like gold dust. Tony
  14. My name is Tony Hill – author of If The Kids Are United (‘the working-class Fever Pitch’) I’m from a Nottinghamshire pit village called Jacksdale, once home to legendary (and infamous during the punk years) music venue The Grey Topper. It’s just been demolished and I’m writing the history of the place. It seems a bit surreal now that the likes of Bill Haley and the Comets, The Sweet, Jimmy Cliff, Edwin Starr, Ben E King, The Stranglers, The Vibrators, Adam and the Ants, Simple Minds, UK Subs, Toyah, The Ruts (shortly before singer Malcolm Owen died of a drug overdose), The Specials, The Pr
