  2. Had to check it wasn't April 1st with this one- http://www.parentdish.co.uk/2014/02/13/mum-shocked-as-council-turn-front-lawn-into-10-level-60m-long-disabled-ramp/?ncid=webmail3
  3. Thats brilliant, thanks for finding it Cliff Ton. I'd done some searching myself, but would never have thought of e bay.
  4. During the 1960's i remember WBUDC buses used to wait at a terminus / turnaround at the junction of valley rd and melton rd in wb. Theres no trace of it anymore. Are there any pictures of it?
  5. We used to give something to a beggar who is usually under a canal bridge in Lincoln, but were dismayed to find out that he arrives in an Audi car, which he leaves in a multi storey car park nearby.
  6. I think its used as an additional classroom, at least that was the original intention, unless health and safety have managed to put the mockers on it. Must have been there two or three years now. It suffered some sort of vandalism/graffiti early on, but seems to have been restored to its former glory.
  7. DAVIDW We think the kids kneeling in the playground are depicting the Coronation Crown.
  8. Thats a great bit of film. My eldest daughter is a teacher there, and i'm sure she will be interested to see it. Its a lovely school, pretty much the same as it was in 1953 by the look of it. There is an annexe with 3 classrooms, Midland Cottages, just down the road. When we were kids, in the '70's, the school was called South County.
  9. Yes, it was next door to where i lived but disappeared just before i moved there, and the chap that lived there did the same shortly after, so i never got chance to ask about it.
  10. Another unusual event in Tollerton was that a house in the village was apparently destroyed by masonry bees.
  11. Evie In the 1970's i worked at Halfway Garage, at Bunny. It was owned by a Max Rumph, and the DOB of 1924 mentioned above would seem about right. I dont recall there being a Mrs Rumph at the time, but he had a daughter who would be in her mid 50's now. Stocky little bloke, he used to spend a lot of time in the Rancliffe Arms opposite. Used to drive round in a Rolls Royce.
  12. In the '60's, just to the left of the Jaguar showroom there was a BMC car dealership. Atkeys may have owned it. They called it the "Mini Clinic", specialising in Mini's, which were becoming very popular by then, and had the workshops on the 2nd floor. Cars were driven up a concrete ramp within the building, taking two sharp turns before arriving in the workshop area. I think it may have been demolished to allow the Jaguar dealers to extend, its hard to tell from the pic.
  13. Sorry Beefsteak, i didnt mean it as a generalisation, most lorries pass each other fine, because one is slower than the other but there seems little justification for the example given, and the time saved must be negligible.
  14. My pet hate is getting stuck behind a lorry overtaking another lorry, usually on the A1. The manoeuvre can last for up to 3 miles or so, both vehicles restricted to the same speed, with the one being overtaken very often nudging in front again, so everyone behind has to sit and wait till the game is over. Then if you dare to glance at the "winner" as you pass them, they glare or gesture at you as if its you thats done something wrong..
  15. Yes, that facility is a bargain Colin. Water companies have been forced to carry out underground leaks on private property for free now, but there are exclusions and the first leak is often the start of many. so i'd go for the new pipe any day Mention of Carsington reservoir reminded me of it collapsing during construction, that would unsteady share prices if it went again now its full! Wonder if anyone remembers it?
  16. Most of the Nottingham area used to be moderately hard. It has advantages for those of you still with lead pipes, usually underground. The lime in the water puts a lining inside the pipe and prevents small amounts of lead leeching into the water. Soft water, apparently is not good long term. Severn Trent will (or would) take a sample from your property free of charge and give you the results from the Lab,showing lead content. Pretty sure they will do a full analysis free if you have good reason, ie Doctor suggested it.
  17. We came back to the car at the Riverside retail park to be informed that someone had run into the back of it, and cleared off. The witness pointed out the car to us, he had gone to the opposite end of the car park and parked there, thinking he had got away with it. Anyway, i confronted the driver who admitted it. He didnt want to claim on his insurance and paid me in full for the quote i got for a new bumper, painting and fitting. Then, when i had a closer look at the damage, it was just a black mark which polished off.
  18. It was the Race of the Year Rog,i think there was decent prize money at stake as well. Mike Hailwood, what a comeback after years out, on that Ducati.
  19. I was lucky enough to be at Mallory for the 1971 race of the year, when John Cooper on the British BSA beat Agostini on the MV, a moment never to be forgotten.
  20. Not much use, but Thurgarton Priory is owned by Roland Duce, who i worked for many years ago. If you do a director search on him, something may come up that could be an indication of what part of it may be used for. You will see that he has been / is a director of many companies...
  21. There was some sort of crash test on that line close to the bridge on the A606 Melton Road at Edwalton. It would be early 1980's at a guess. I was there coincidentally, because police closed the road for a few minutes while the test took place.
  22. Many years ago i got stopped for speeding, on a motorbike on Derby Road near the QMC. They pulled me up at a bus shelter which is no longer there. My first concern was that the bike wasn't taxed but luckily they didnt check the disc,so i got away with that. Anyway,in due course a summons arrived,43 in a 30 and i decided to plead not guilty. I ended up in court, i think is was at the bottom of Mansfield Road. By now i was regretting this as both the cops who were on duty that day were there, and i had to cross question one of them. The magistrate, it was either Geoffrey Macpherson or Dere
  23. The link worked fine for me. We have a similar set up,but without the domes. We found the quality of night time images to be a disappointment to be honest. Also the cameras seem to attract spiders and a web on the camera lens can just about obliterate the night time images,so be prepared to clean the cameras somehow. I think Makro have that sort of stuff on offer periodically.
  24. The men you remember were permanently on the site. There were 3 fitters and one electrician who worked from there,We used to park the vans there overnight, and were often out during the day unless there was anything to do in the workshop, so you may not have noticed us. I'll be trying to think of the name of the contractors all day now..
  25. I worked from Radcliffe on Trent sewage works from 1982, and remember the work Beefsteak was involved in. We were Maintenance Fitters and had a little workshop there.
