  1. Think I know the pic you're referring to DA. Is it the one of a 9F, a B16 and an O4 ? It's in virtually every book I've seen on the GC in Notts.
  2. Think you're correct there DA re 9F's not fitting on Vics turntable. They didn't have the same problem at Annesley I don't think. I'm pretty certain I've seen them turned there. Glad you've bought The Back Liny. It'll keep you busy for days. There's also three other good books by Reed covering all areas of Nottm. Check them out on Book Law's website. Best of luck.
  3. The lard / fat for dads chippie in the late 50's was delivered in blocks about as big as a small suitcase. Yes, heavy indeed.

    Ginger Baker RIP.

    My thoughts exactly.
  5. Clotted Cream for me !
  6. Burtons Arcade was often a Saturday afternoon treat for me too. The cheese aromas, fish smells, hanging poultry. Fascinating for a small child.
  7. If anyone is sufficiently interested, the book is available from Book Law Publications. Carlton. Nottm. £27.95, but I was charged about £25. A feast of info and pictures on Daybrook, LVJ, and of course Colwick.
  8. In the book I've just mentioned, there's a picture of stored carriages, and it states that they are destined for Rigleys for disposal. The pic is taken from LVJ signal box looking westwards.
  9. I regularly look in on Chris's site. It gives a great load of information on Annesley. A mine of anecdotes, pictures, lists of visiting engines etc. Brilliant.
  10. Just finished reading 'The Back Line'. (Great Northern Railway) by Hayden J Reed. It's the definitive history of the eastern reaches of the GNR's Derbyshire Extention (The Friargate Line) It starts at Colwick and finishes at Basford & Bulwell. It doesn't exactly cover this section of line, as it branched off at Leen Valley Junction. A fascinating read all the same.
  11. Historically, it's the most renowned town in the area. Famous for the battle of 1264. It's not a bad little town architecturally either.
  12. Don't you believe it. You're under a misapprehension there B. Kids of well under 16 are out till all hours in some areas.
  13. Further to previous mentions of diversions, the river was also rerouted when the Springfield Retail Park and Morrisons complex was built, and again when Tesco's was constructed several years later.
  14. Our Alexa doesn't understand 'go screw yourself' or something similar.
  15. Being in a queue anywhere. Ditherers and dawdlers at mini islands ! People who stop to chat in enterances thereby blocking the way.
  16. Theddlethorpe WW. I collected lots of bullets, shell casings and other stuff there. My cousin and I were there about 1960, and the very tattered red flag was flying. We assumed that the range hadn't been used for years. How wrong we were. We soon scarpered when the planes came into sight.
  17. Ginger Baker, legendary drummer with Cream, Blind Faith, Hawkwind, Atomic Rooster, Baker Gurvitz Army, Ginger Bakers Airforce, and the Graham Bond Organisation has sadly died today aged 80. Truly amazing !
  18. Thank goodness it was only bums !
  19. Seen one, you've seen em all.
  20. Not exactly biscuits as such, but when I went to the local Co-op to pay my lottery yesterday, lo and behold, they had packets of shortcrust pastry mince pies. Yes, I did succumb to temptation !
  21. I always wondered that. Also more recently, tyre and exhaust centres.
  22. When I was at the Menin Gate a few years ago. Harry Patch, one of the last three WW1 Tommies was there. Sadly, he died a couple years ago.
