  1. Porridge has to be one of the best ever. Ronnie Barker was a much better actor than anyone gave him credit for. He also for many years, wrote scripts under a pseudonym so no one would know it was him. The man was a genius. Also astounding was Reggie Perrin. The Goons still make me laugh now, laugh to the point of being incapable of breathing type of funny. Total genius. I tended towards the absurdist style of Pete and Dud (AKA Derek and Clive - Dont listen unless you have a very broad mind) and Monty Python. OK sometimes Python was lame, but the classics remain. Life of Brian was possib
  2. Small indeed. 2009, in Moscow airport before they renovated it, the international terminal and the internal flight terminals were on completely the opposite sides of the airport, needing a transfer bus which departed when the driver felt like it. After getting my passport stamped, I headed off with some intent to the bus. The flight was to Mineralnyye Vody airport, which is in the deep south of Russia, well off the beaten track. Someone behind me said - "He looks like he knows where he is going - we'll ask him" it was a Northern Irish accent, but he was more than a little surprised when I an
  3. Peter Anson also had Quad, which was about the best you could buy, far better than Bang and Olufson and way better than Nose. I still have a fully functioning Quad amp which takes as much time as the Space Shuttle to prepare for launch but the sound is superb. The mrs thinks its an ugly green brick.
  4. Melissa, I was in Operation Granby, which was the first Gulf War. Throughout the war I was nowhere near anything nasty, as I was In Saudi Arabia for the whole conflict. in September 1990 I was in Arnhem for the anniversary of the battle there (which was a terrible battle in1944) and many of the veterans knew we were going into war. They knew what we were facing. I recall one veteran who was in a medical aid station during the war saying to me "sir, how many casualties could you cope with?" I replied, "About 60" He said to me then, that he got more than 200 casualties per hour
  5. Melissa When my grandmother died, my father found the documents that my grandmother kept. It included my grandfather's documents ( he suffered gunshot wounds in WW1( and my uncle, who died at the hands of the Japanese in 1943) If anyone is interested I would be happy to scan the documents, but I could be identified by the documents so I would be very careful about which ones were on this site.
  6. Melissa Nottingham was very lightly affected by WW2. Casualties were light. When I was in the army I had the pleasure of escorting veterans around Arnhem and Normandy (this is 1990 time) and a surprising number of vets were from Nottingham. I recall one vet, who lived in Goodliffe Street in Hyson Green, won the Military Cross twice. Sgt Bartle. He parachuted into Normandy before the beaches were taken. That takes special bravery.
  7. As ever, Cliff Ton is the man who knows his way around the maps. I dont know how he does it so fast, or so well, but he has my admiration.
  8. Pure cocaine has only one medical use nowadays - in surgery on the nose. It stops bleeding, and to stop the patient getting a buzz out of it, the pharmacists put the cocaine in a vaseline like carrier. Spoilsports.
  9. Bob. I often visit my parents in Selston. Navigate me to the Countryman.
  10. I met Dr Cochrane many years after my birth, at a Nottingham Hospitals Radio do, and I slapped his backside. I considered it revenge as he did it to me in 1961.
  11. Mick The petrol for me to go down to London is often far in excess of the train fare. I do have to drive from Teesside. Also, I hate to fly so I have to be a little (or a lot) drunk before I get on the aircraft. Not good if I have to drive at the other end.
  12. Absolutely Fosters ... I cant call it beer because it int. The Larwood and Voce pub not far from Trent Bridge does do some good real ales. TBI does too, but on match days is often too packed to get served.
  13. Forest all well and good, but its time now for the real sport. Cricket. Nottinghamshire is still one of the finest teams in the country. Trent Bridge is one of the finest grounds in the country. What is there not to like?
  14. I too was a regular there in the early 80s. I adored the trad folk. The Ellen Vannin was one of my favourites and although I cant sing (and should probably have a restraining order on me singing) I adored that song. Leaving of Liverpool too..... happy days.
  15. hippogirl I'm off to Russia again next week, so I will book my tickets to London tomorrow. Stupid cost for the train! £58! That, plus the underground fare is half my total airfare cost to Moscow!
  16. I last travelled from Midland station to St Pancras a couple of months ago. They hadn't got the station into anywhere near something useful and easy. How long do they need to get this station right? It was awful. The entrance was still on Station street, and no lifts so me carrying a 20kg case and hand luggage, gets very uncomfortable. Toilets - Apart from the drunk in the corner, and the vomit on the floor, not too bad. I did note that the toilets had been inspected, but I suspect that they just signed the page and did nothing about the state of the toilets at all. EMT costs are just plain
  17. The Pagoda was a very good Chinese restaurant. I knew it well. Just what are the planners of Nottingham doing? Do they actually understand what they are trying to do, or just to reduce buildings to rubble just for a laugh?
  18. Tug was a joy to work with. He was very tough, but commanded respect. His brother, Little Tug was equally a joy to work with.
  19. Viccy park is currently doing well. As Mundellan, it was a joy for me and my mates to go to the Viccy gardens. It is still a pleasure now.
  20. Thanks Melissa. I hope your assignment goes well.
  21. I liked Shippoes too. It had almost a lemony taste to the bitter. I can recall the taste to this day.
  22. What a wonderful thread! I cannot recall Victoria station at all, but the 3d recreations are superb. All credit to the creators of such a wonderful project.
  23. Notts parking attendants are probably the worst in the world. I have numerous problems with them, including them trying to tow my car away when legally parked on Radford Road after 6pm. I also got a ticket for my parking with one wheel just fractionally over the white line in the Meadows!. The worst was when I parked up and tried to read the parking restriction sign when some Hitler tried to give me a ticket. I actually asked him if it was legal to park here and he ignored me but spent some time on his little machine. He gave me a ticket, which I contested, as he could have been there for 5
