Hi everyone** for my sins, I was born at Hollingwood, Chesterfield and my family moved to Bulwell in 1936, ( I was four. ) Spent most of my life in Nottinghamshire, Bulwell, Nuthall, Worksop except six years in Canada and the last 23 in Devon. Wife and I love Ballroom Dancing and go about three times a week, we met at " The Palais " 1962. Intit good on eer eh ???

  4. Ayup Rog-- I left Albert Street Seniors in 1945 and went to The Tech School For Textiles in Nottingham I will be 79 tommorow the 8th July.

I was born in 1932 also and joined the R.A.F from Nottingham in 1950, Met a lad on the railway station on my way to join up Named Derek Bramley ( Still around Derek ? ) I did my basic training at Hereford and then Posted for the remainder of my ( Sentence ) to R.A.F. Chivenor. We now live in Devon since 1988. I remember the Boat Trips to Colwick Amusement Park, is this still going, run by Trevethics I think. My sister went to Mundella and one day I was across the River swimming ( about 14 years old ) and I saw her on the other side and swam across, the current was awful and I struggled to g
  6. My sister has a bill for about £1.50 for a nights stay on her wedding night including a Newspaper and Parking. Circa 1947.

We used to Catch the Train ( During the 40`s )( The fair was only a few Coppers ) at Basford and Bulwell Station and then I believe it went Via-Basford-New Basford-Carrington- Nottingham Victoria-Netherfield and Colwick-Gedling-Daybrook and back to Basford and Bulwell. I may be wrong on the route but it was along most of these Stations. We would break the Journey at The Victoria Station, have a look around Parliament street where there was a shop that sold " Railway " books and we would have a book where we could tick off all the Trains as we spotted them.   10. Bannerman Road off Highbury Vale was Cobbled when we lived there and most streets around there. Happy memories of Albert Sreet School, there was a Couple of shops on there, one near the school that sold " Suckers " ( Ice Lollies ) for a halfpenny and a penny, the other shop was Westwoods the beer- off. and of course " Clarys " Working Mens Club. and the Tannery. As for Tar I remember the Westwood boys Michael and Terence got lathered with it when playing on the old " Suncoal " site on Cinderhill road. I believe this was a German undertaking and shut because of the War.

  13. Anybody remember Machins the Butchers on Highbury vale ? Russel Machin had some premisses near my Dad- Joe Dann ( The Bookie ) in the row of shops which were along the Highbury Pub side of Highbury Vale. And Amber Vandelle lived upstairs at Russels for a while. When these shops were pulled down Dad went across the road to the old " Massingales " shop which was a Monumental Masons
  14. Sandos Pies !!! we used to go upstairs at the Bulwell cafe and have a Fourpenny Mix I believe it was a Pie peas and chips.
  15. How about the late 1940`s when Gregory Peck made a personal appearance on Stage at " The Odeon " I also saw Stan Kenton and his Orchestra there in around 1962. I also met that night my old school pal " Ginger " " Mutt" Geof Thomas, are you still around Geof ?
  16. This was Redferns pop factory, some kids would nick pop bottles from their yard and take them round the front for the " Deposit "
  17. We bought an Ironing Board at Pearsons in around 1966 , and it is still going strong, it is built like a Battleship and must have cost an arm and a leg then but it has lasted.. Do you remember the very ancient escaltor at Griffins it was made with wooden Slats and was only one person or so wide.My sisterOlive trained at Griffins as a seamstress before the second world war but we lived at Bulwell so mother thought Olive should work nearer home when the war broke our. Used to be a regular at " The Barn " with Ken Mc Intosh`s Band resident, I remember the Pub nearby ( Forgot the name ) but in those days in each room you could press a Bell and a Waiter would come for your order ( A pint for about 1/3d ) This was our last stop before the Barn after a pub crawl, The Queen Elizabeth- Sawyers Arms- Dog and Bear Etc . I remember around 1947 passing the Theatre Royal and seeing an american " Wooden Body " station waggon , I was about 14 at the time and was fascinated with such a Car, it belonged to the Actor/Singer ---Allan Jones (14 October 1907–27 June 1992) was an American actor and singer. For many years he was married to actress Irene Hervey; their son is American pop singer Jack Jones.
  20. I remember going to " The old general " Pub and upstairs was a Stripshow and one night the Boys were a little boisterous and the Landlord was getting agitated and he stood on a chair and called for a little less noise and said " This is not a Phonographic Show You Know "---- Happy days
