  1. Everyone was a hero yesterday, it was clearly meant to be. Great credit has to go to Luke William's and Ryan Harley's tactics. Many times this season Notts have worn out teams by keeping the ball thus forcing the opposition to chase after it. Yesterday Cook had to substitute Dallas, Colclough and Dobra because they were all knackered. I would guess these three were also decent penalty takers but that's not to take anything away from Archie Mair's brilliant performance in the shoot out. I highlighted the inspired goalkeeper substitution in my earlier post. Luke knows an
  2. It was written in the stars. Not at our best but what a performance. The goalkeeper substitution just before the penalty shootout was inspired but there's no doubt that was the plan and it was executed to perfection. Notts superior fitness paid back in spades. Chesterfield were dead on their feet at the end. Bad luck Chessie. Jason sorted it for us. Luke Williams is going to be up there with Sir Jimmy. We're back. COYP.
  3. I'm really surprised the Radfords have decided to give Nigel Clough another year. I read somewhere they believe he has made progress with the team yet if I'm not mistaken The Stags made the playoffs last season whereas this season they've just missed out. So where's the progress? I don't get it. I know full well it's none of my business how the Radfords spend their money but I will be very surprised if NC can bring success to The Stags next season unless he spends big in the summer. NC is nowhere near as good a manager as his dad but to be brutally honest his dad only really achieved w
  4. A brilliant turnaround by Forest after missing a penalty early on then conceding but grabbing an equaliser on the stroke of half-time. An own goal and a penalty wrapped it up in the second half. A very timely 3 points after an 11 game winless run. The win lifts the Reds out the relegation zone but the bottom of the table is so tight things can all change again over the weekend. Another win for Forest on Saturday at Brentford would be fantastic the worry is they have only won 1 away game all season. There couldn't be a better time to make that 2. Their GD could still be the difference
  5. One of my dear late dad's party pieces was for him to sing the introduction to Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) much to the amusement of my cousins. RIP Harry
  6. Notts County's veteran Jim O'Brien is such an amazing role model. He's 35 years old and always gives 100%. He scored his second hat trick for Notts as they ultimately recorded an excellent win away at relegated Maidstone but not before the Pies had let them back into the game after taking a 3-0 lead. Sadly it was all in vain as Wrexham dispensed with Boreham Wood to claim the National League title. Congratulations to them. The huge cash injection from Hollywood has started to pay back. A long way still to go however. Boreham Wood played really well but Wrexham are just so strong with thei
  7. Wrexham's convincing win over Yeovil last night has made it even harder for Notts to take the National League title. It's still mathematically possible for the Magpies to nick it but it's looking very unlikely now. The Wrexham win condemned Yeovil to relegation which is remarkable if you remember they were playing in The Championship only 10 years ago. On Saturday Notts travel to already relegated Maidstone for what should be an easy win on paper but as Brian Clough famously said the game is played on grass not paper lol. Kicking off at 6:30 Wrexham are at home to Boring Wo
  8. If Notts play like they did in the second half yesterday then even if they end up in the playoffs they will walk it. But just to remind everyone Notts could still nick it. Yeovil who are Wrexham's opponents at The Racecourse ground on Tuesday evening have drawn 19 games this season, yes 19. They are well versed in parking the bus as Notts know having been held to a 0-0 draw by them last November and just to add, Yeovil drew 1-1 with Wrexham earlier this season. I watched the Barnet Wrexham game yesterday and whilst I'm unapologetically biased I thought Wrexham could have easily
  9. Probably familiar to a few on here but there's a town in South Yorkshire called Penistone. I wonder how the locals pronounce it. Penistown perhaps? It made me laugh out loud when I drove through it back in the 70s.
  10. It's hard for me to be objective about yesterday's game having supported Notts for nearly 65 years so I was pleased Oz thought a draw would have been a fair result which is my thought too. Wrexham are a team of good footballers who are well versed in the dark arts and are also quite physical whilst Notts have lacked the physical side to their game all season and have topped the table based on their footballing skills alone. Looking at this and previous seasons it's arguably not enough and I'm inclined to agree having watched Notts get “roughed up” by teams of clogging giants on several oc
  11. Notts brushed aside Wealdstone yesterday with a dominant display in front of nearly 10000 at Meadow Lane. On a pitch reminiscent of Wembley Notts played their passing game close to perfection with Macca Langstaff's goal bringing another record for the Notts goal machine. Austin opened the scoring after 7 mins with an excellent goal whilst Vincent scored the third with an equally impressive finish. Thanks to Halifax Notts are back on top of The National League making Mondays top of the table clash with Hollywood backed Wrexham a very nerve racking affair. Mansfield did very well at Swindon
  12. Forest have just released a statement that they're sticking with Steve Cooper. Interesting to say the least. Stick or twist. I don't think he can turn things around unless he's left to get on with it. At the moment I think it's too late to change anything but what do I know? The real problem IMHO lies over Steve's head The twist in the tale may be another club coming for him in which case he may well be tempted to move on to manage a club that let's him get on and do it his way.
  13. My son set me up to watch Forest on a pirate stream last night and I was surprised what an entertaining game it turned out to be. Forest have some good players who just weren't able to play as a team for almost all the game. Leeds were excellent and don't look anywhere near a relegation outfit these days. Their new manager has certainly instilled some real determination into them whereas Forest play with very little belief. I think the recruitment of so many players has left Steve Cooper with a huge problem. They have virtually no cohesion at all. They just don't know one another and seem

  15. Oz, sorry to be contrary but Wrexham still have a game in hand over Notts and they certainly look unstoppable at the moment however five of their six remaining games are far from routine. Yeovil and Torquay desperately need points to stave off relegation whilst Barnet and Boreham Wood need the points to ensure they secure their playoff places. I would expect Wrexham to drop at least a couple of points from these four games. The need for Notts to win at the Racecourse Ground goes without saying. Notts are still in with a chance but can't afford any more slip ups. I do
  16. Thanks for this Oz, it lead me to read up a bit more on Keith. I didn't know he co-wrote “A Whiter Shade of Pale” with Gary Brooker. It's a haunting song with weird lyrics but it always whisks me back to 1967 when I hear it. I also liked the less well known follow up “Homberg.” In 1969 I borrowed their third album “A Salty Dog” from a girlfriend and liked it a lot. The wiki entry for Keith says he was Jewish and the son of a Holocaust survivor which he said was the reason for the dark tone of his lyrics. Very enlightening. RIP Keith
  17. Yes I agree Mary the smug older brother in that ad gets my back up too. I think it's because he reminds me a lot of an old school “friend” who was a bit of a porker and had a similar personality.
  18. An impressive and thoroughly professional performance from Notts last night on a soft and very demanding surface. Archie Mair's penalty save was absolutely huge after a very controversial Notts opener. It would be fascinating to hear the conversation between John Bostock and the referee before he slipped it to Macca Langstaff to score his 40th goal whilst the Altrincham defence was in complete disarray. Most referees wouldn't have allowed the goal to stand but John must have had the refs approval to take the kick quickly so it's a nice tactic to keep in mind for future games. Hard to
  19. I recently discovered that Mick Coombes works as a volunteer at the Newark Air Museum should any ex Roland Green pupils want to seek him out and say hello.
  20. Leeds win at Wolves and Everton’s draw at Chelsea has pushed Forest two places closer to the drop zone going into the International break. Their goal difference could be critical to their survival in the top tier. Mansfield salvaged a point with an added time equaliser at Stockport to keep their hopes of a playoff place alive, just. Chesterfield recorded a great win at high flying Woking. That's their fifth game undefeated. They are getting very close to a third place finish. Notts could only manage a draw at Barnet whilst Wrexham managed an excellent win at Bromley. Wrexham no
  21. Forest have a difficult game against Newcastle tomorrow evening and they desperately need to get a least a point. A loss would likely see them nearer the relegation zone at the end of the weekend. Steve Cooper has publicly stated that signing Lingard was a mistake. Apparently he's been paid £180,000 a week and contributed very little. That's been a very costly mistake by Mr Cooper and it isn't just the money. The rest of the squad are probably pretty demoralised by what's gone on with “superstar” Lingard and it's showing in the team's performances. I don't imagine Ryan Yates earns a
  22. The bottom of the Premier League is very tight and all points are precious in the battle to stay up. Goal difference could decide it at the death which has to be a worry because Forest's GD is one of the worst. I thought Steve Cooper was amazing last season but he's not looking so good currently. Not sure about Mansfield. They've been quite inconsistent of late but they may yet scrape into the playoffs. They don't look anywhere near good enough for promotion. Notts continue to push the Hollywood dream team all the way. I hope they can get up as champions although Wrexham certainly ha
  23. Margie, I've come to like corned beef as I've aged particularly corned beef hash which I think is delicious. It is odd that they still can it in those hazardous cans with keys. So many nasty cuts. Talking of Fray Bentos, they do a very tasty steak and kidney pudding. The casing is made with suet and is quite soft. Far superior to a pie IMHO. I love kidneys as did my dad but my wife thinks they taste of wee. A pork chop with the kidney attached is a rare treat.
  24. I can't let Shrove Tuesday pass without resurrecting the pancake topping debate. I read on the internet today that sugar and lemon is by far and away the most popular pancake topping. My mum always used to use orange juice and sugar which in later years my wife and her mum used to deride. I can recommend maple syrup although it's pricey and the substitutes taste just as nice IMHO. There's also a cinnamon sugar topping which I enjoy. Cherry fruit pie filling and ice cream is jolly nice too. I can't finish my Shrove Tuesday post without mentioning dear old whip and top. I hav
  25. I loved that series. I watched it avidly from start to finish. The final episode where the Balicki family are reunited is real tear jerker. According to Genome the BBC archive of The Radio Times it was shown on Sundays at 5:40. Happy days.
