  1. My dad was also a member of the Nottingham Historical Arts Society in the 1970s. I was only around 7-8 years old at that time, but on many occasions used to accompany him on his "expeditions" with the society excavating the caves of Nottingham. Also remember going with him to The Bell Inn at The Old Market Square several times whilst the society excavated the well in the large back room. This was in the days of the old Sunday licencing hours . The Bell was then owned by the Jackson family . So at 2pm when the jazz band had finished its last set and the customers were all out, the
  2. For last two years ive been trying to find a different job, one that allows me the time to partake in activities such as this . And guess what , i found one . So here i am .
  3. I worked at this ASDA from 1983 to 1989 . Can remember the filming of The Auf Wiedesien Pet episode .At the time i was working on the fresh food department where most of the filming took place . ( mary from the george hotel posing as a customer ) . Jimmy Nail came into the prep area in the back where i was working and asked if he could make a quick telephone call . How could i say no to this figure from our TV screens ? I wished now i had done . His quick call lasted over 45 mins ., Resulting in me having to tell him he had overstepped our friendship !! He was most rude . Using the works t
  4. And when he finished working at the local chippy retired to somewhere in Cheshire.
  5. Dodger Green, aka Tony green had a little yorkshire terrier when he had the Newmarket. The dog was a mascot at the time for Notts county. I rememer the dog went missing around 1980 and local newspapers and television channels made appeals for its safe return. Not the friendliest of mine hosts but he ran the pub properly , and was respected . Dont think he would have the patience to do the job now though.
  6. Thanks for the welcome Den. Although i never met lynne ive heard my mum talk about her in the past. Im suprised really that i didnt follow the family tradition and go and work there myself During school holidays i sometimes used to go to work with my mum and in the bar in the old Mechanics was a little stock room where i would sit with my colouring books whilst my mum served drinks. I always remember these big jars of cherries in syrup that they used to put in drinks, and me trying to get the lid off the jar. The club then was managed by Capt Tom Graham , always wore a suit. There was a pr
  7. The great Jesse Boot is infact a distant relative of my mums, her maiden name was Boot . We have copies of the family tree on my mums side and Jesse Boot was , let me get it right .... my great great grandads cousin. Im sure there must be quite a few decendants of his still around in this area, looking at the family tree it looks like he was part of a large family. All the same still a bit of local history and a mini claim to fame .
  8. Names that come to mind in the pro boxer / doormen thread , these are lads ive worked with that were working on the doors in nottingham back in the 80's and early 90,s. Osbourne taylor , now in his 50,s. still works doors in nottingham , his dad incidentally worked on the door at the old cubra libra on hurts yard and later with us at the Cookie Club till he was 70. always wore a trilby hat on the door. Next we have two brothers who both boxed professionally in the 80's and 90's , Chris and Tony Richards. Tony started his door career aged 17 at the Turf Tavern. Chris worked at places like the
  9. The Thurland is now back on the market. Currently being run by a holding company who are based in wait for it...... Gibraltar. Not excatly local . This seems to be the current trend with " for sale pubs" . I suppose its more atractive to sell a pub or buisness as a going concern as oppose to a run down pub covered in tin . The only down side to this is that these holding companies know very little if anything about the local community or in fact how to run a pub at all . The majority of the holding managers ive worked for have had very little expierence if any in the licenced trade. Years
  10. Have worked at the new Arriba in the past. Presently i supply doorstaff for the Arriba owners Alan and Margaret at two of the other bars they own, The Turf Tavern, also Bar Snapps on st james's street, next to the Arriba. Ian, i remember the sweatshirt incident at the north pier bar , glad you got us in eventually, remember walking in to find half of Nottingham in there.Seem to remember Forest were playing somewhere up that way that weekend. Also remember after a few shandies in the afternoon and making our way back to our luxury accomodation for a power nap, all we could hear was sirens a
  11. HI all . Finally got round to joining this great forum . Im Andrew Fox, in my 40's . living in carlton, went to school in Netherfield then Carlton Le Willows. One of my first jobs after leaving school was working in the local slaughterhouse in netherfield. Lots of blood. This was very good training for my current job which i have done for the last 20 odd years. Work in the security industry in the role of door supervisor, used to be called bouncers years ago. In this job ive worked at most of the pubs and nightclubs talked about on this forum, the good the bad and the ugly For a hobby i co
  12. The Mechanics has been a bit of a family buisness for quite a few members of my family. My late grandad worked at the club in the late 70's. He worked part time as a steward. My uncle is currently employed at the mechanics carrying out the same roll. My sister also worked at the Mechanics in the library on a saturday, this also would have been in the late 70's. Lastly but no means leastly my mum retired from the club last summer after completing a mammouth 38 years of working behind the bar that Den talks about. My mum worked opposite shifts to Joan, then the bar only opened for lunch time ,
