  3. It also included the Public baths (not the swimming type ) As our house on Grainger Street did not have a bath much use was made of them as by many others. I can't remember the price but it included a towel and a small bar of soap. When you had finished bathing the attendant used to clean the bath ready for the next user.
  4. Heavy snow here as well. The one good thing about the it is that it makes my garden look just as good as everyone elses.
  5. The Globe at Trent Bridge. Weekly regular viewing was Flash Gordon (Buster Crabbe) Hopalong Cassidy (with Gabby Hayes) and a whole host of Mickey Duck cartoons. Good value for a tanner
  6. I remember the RN Recruiting office (How could I forget) signed on there for 12 years in November 1962 at the tender age of 15 years and 4 months Sadly there was no child line then. Recruiting officer was Lt George Selleck I still have the signing on papers
  7. Sams was at HMP whitemoor in the late 90s early 2000s. As a category A prisoner he had to have is false leg removed at night in case he attempted to escape.
  8. Hi Poohbear For a main road the A52 through Bingham was surprizingly quiet the busiest time was the school run for Toothill Comp and Market day on Thursday. I served out at Whatton in the 70s and have lots of happy memories of Bingham and the surrounding villages
  9. Hi Albert thanks for your response I must confess I can't remember any of the Dodsley offspring you mention. It is unlikely that you are the Albert I remember as from your earlier post it would seem you left Brand St in 1953 which is when I was just a nipper likewise it is unlikely that you would know me I lived on Grainger St opposite Michael Booth and next door to Mrs Wrights shop.
  10. Hi Michael Definately the Magpie. My brother worked on the site when they were building it we used to go and play in the cellars when the builders knocked off for the day. It used to be my watering hole when I was on leave during the sixties
  11. Hi Michael I'm just back from a two month sojourn into the foreign. The names I remember from Brand street besides those you mention are the Dodsleys. Mr Dodsley used to drive the Taxi when he wasnt in the Magpies or to drunk, come to think of it he still drove ( no drink drive laws then ) his wife Violet and son Albert. Further down were the Froggats Alan and Norman. I remember Georgie Panter he was the only kid who could climb the old style green street lamp at the top of Grainger st and sit on the cross bars at the top. I remember the monkey park at the bottom of Daleside Road most of the
  12. Can't say I ever counted but it always seemed that way on Saturday night in town in the 60s and they were all gorgeous. This must include some of the current readership!
  13. A dickie in this context was the blue and white collar on a naval ratings uniform touching it was considered good luck. After a run ashore in Nottingham on a Saturday night it would be filthy. Incidently Nottingham was considered one of the best runs ashore in the country mainly because of the ratio of females to males (claimed to be 7-1 when I was serving) Whenever I was coming on leave there was always a queue to join me The RNA club was always the first stop
  14. Hi Michael I spent many a happy hour in there I would always call in there on the way home from Midland station having got off the train from wherever. If I was in uniform I was treated like royalty and rarely left in a sober state there was always an old tar who would want to swing the lamp whilst buying the beers. It will be missed. The worst part was the women kept wanting to touch your Dickie for luck
  15. Does this mean the RNA club has gone?
  16. Having left Nottingham a number of years ago it's fantastic to hear all those familiar words and terms again. Ive just tried them all on my daughter she looked at me as if I had just arrived from the planet ZOG she even asked me what colour the sky was on the planet. She has clearly been brought up all wrong. I blame her Mother
  17. Hi Michael The fireplace in the backroom at number 20 was the old black hob type and was almost the width of the room we could boil the old kettle on it and do toast and dry smaller bits around it. The trip to the wash house entailed me pushing the washing in an old pram but not the one we collected the coke in from the cokeyard
  18. Trevor/Michael I remember it exactly as you say Went there by walking bus from London Road school once a week. A session in our own time used to cost a tanner the session was as long as the attendant wanted it to be depending on the numbers. As we didn't have a bathroom at home we used to use the bathhouse mum esed the washhouse in the winter with those huge pull out driers that you had to hang the clothes on
  19. As I recall as you went through the door in the photograph the entrance to the infants school was on your left the stairs to the junior school were on your right, half way up was the headmasters office and the entrance to the dining room
