  1. CT, don't suppose you have anything a bit higher up Arnold Road? In early 1960s we lived in an old detached stone house called Stoneycroft sitting in an acre of land, surrounded by lawns and a pear tree orchard, between Wilton St and Wallis St. Later demolished and Spreckley and Evans printers built on the site. The nearby Stoneycroft Rd was no doubt named after the old house.
  2. Speedos have always been designed not to under-read in any set of circumstances - various factors can influence the reading. The speed indicated by a sat nav should be accurate though - try comparing the two and you will typically see a three-four mph difference; maybe more at higher speeds.
  3. That's as maybe but she cannot be removed from office. Short of death, resignation or conviction for an imprisonable offence, she can stay on until May 2025 (4-year term). She is going to try to turn the tables by campaigning for speed awareness and reduction. Watch out for a city-wide 20mph limit!
  4. She would also have had to pay her lawyer, who argued 'exceptional hardship' on her behalf. Something about needing to get to Salisbury to see one of her daughters. That was unsuccessful, hence the driving ban. At least she can start driving again in January with a clean sheet (all points wiped away by the ban).
  5. I thought sentencing was tomorrow; must have got dates mixed up. Anyway, she can't ride an electric scooter while banned (it is classed as a mechanically propelled vehicle).
  6. I have had two text messages from Severn Trent reminding me not to waste water during this heatwave; not to use a hose pipe or sprinkler and to turn the tap off when brushing teeth. I went down The Wells Road today and see that the water leaking from a boundary box on the corner of Eccles Way continues to cause a stready stream down the Wells Road for a few hundred yards (until it reaches a drain that is not blocked). It has been leaking for a good couple of months and they know about it as they painted a blue arrow next to it several weeks ago.
  7. Sentencing next Tuesday (19th) at magistrates' court. There is a public gallery AFAIK - might draw a crowd!
  8. As of August last year, he did have a barrister, Vanessa Marshall QC, representing him. Wonder why he is now representing himself? Surely he has the wherewithall to pay for counsel? Was the initial advice (probably "you should reconsider your plea") not what he wanted to hear?
  9. Socks and sandals combo. Lycra/stretch leggings - hardly anyone has the physique to get away with it.
  10. Tattoos of names and birthdates. Lest they forget?
  11. On the odd and even numbers, I recall being told 'odds on the left and even on the right' as you progressed away from a town. Example is Carlton Road (odds on left from Nottingham) vs Carlton Hill (odds on left from Carlton) hence the switch from odd to even where they join.
  12. Going back a bit further... https://www.macearchive.org/films/atv-today-20021973-victoria-centre-clock
  13. Having looked back to posts in this thread dated 17 June 2015 (page 10), I don't think I can refute that suggestion!
  14. I hear it is quite interesting. I shall be there!
  15. For Beeston U3A members AFAIK. Is it in a newsletter?
  16. From Telegraph: Sunak 3:1 Javid 10:1 Hunt 8:1 Truss 8:1 Zahawi 10:1 Wallace 8:1 Mordaunt 9:2 Tugendhat 8:1 Patel 40:1 Raab 28:1
  17. Being in the street with a knife might be more of an issue nowadays. Not sure that "I was taking it to be sharpened" would satisfy the boys in blue.
  18. For years the tarmac at the top of Kent Road where it meets Porchester has been eroding to expose the original cobbles. I'd say the patch is now an oval around 5' x 3'. They have recently repainted the white lines for the junction, including a line over the cobbles. I guess it is now a 'feature'!
  19. The privately-owned scooters (usually all black) are the worst. Speed not regulated like the 'Wind' ones you can hire. Probably okay to own one but totally illegal to ride on public roads, pavements, etc. I clocked one doing at least 30mph down Porchester (easily keeping up with cars). No crash hemet and tiny wheels that are bound to find a pot hole sooner or later.
  20. Not seen or used for decades: repairing car bodywork with fibreglass. Maybe cars just don't rust the way they used to since zinc treatment of the body shells became commonplace. I remember buying kits in the 1970s/1980s from the likes of Motorists Discount Centres, containing resin and hardener together with pieces of fine and coarse fibreglass matting. Think it was David's Isopon P40 (a quick Google shows the resin is still available).
  21. Watched Episode 1 of Sherwood. Very slow to start (was thinking "so what is it about?" after about half an hour). Then someone whose favourite tipple was a pint of mixed (is that still a thing?) was shot with a bolt from a crossbow, with the hackneyed 'half the cast had a motive' plotline. I was struggling to decide when it is supposed to be set: I saw one of the youngsters with a smartphone with three cameras (fairly recent?) and mention of social media. However, the police set up a temporary investigations room (in a chapel?) with not a laptop or mobile phone in sight. Just a map of
  22. I think Barrie Judge may still be around (he is on LinkedIn). We need him to give us the full SP.
  23. From BookATable.com The Bread and Bitter was officially opened by Barrie Judge on December 5th 2007. Back in 1991, Mr Judge shut his bakery on the same site. Now fully restored sixteen years later as a pub, his bakery ovens remain built into the wall in the central area of the pub, along with a "Brewers Graveyard", full of artefacts from closed down breweries of yesteryear.
  24. I looked at the palimpsest this morning as I walked along Mapperley Top. I don't think it could have been HUDSON'S; there is not enough space to fit 'ON' before the 'S. I am sure it was simply three lines JUDGE'S HOUSEHOLD STORE replaced by two lines JUDGE'S HOUSEHOLD STORE
  25. Yes Mrs B. Usually 5 amp for lighting circuits, 15 amp for immersion heater, 30 amp for power sockets, cookers and showers. It was tinned copper wire and not as sensitive as modern circuit breakers. Fuse wire would 'fuse' or 'blow' (melt) when the current got to about three times the rating.
