  1. My grandad always told me a story, In 1942 he was a 12 year old living on Colwick Road, One day, him, his brother Dennis and there mates were playing in the road when a german airplane, think he said " Messerschmidt" ? probably spelt it wrong, came down colwick road and started shooting up the road. Everybody walking had to dive for cover as quick as they could.

Another time during the Nottingham Blitz, His family were taking shelter during the big air raid of May, when an incendiary bomb came thought the roof and landed in the bathroom (they had a posh house for the 40's) the bomb didn't go off on impact, My Great uncle being home on leave, had just placed a bucket of sand on the bomb and shut the door when it went off. He was catapulted down the stairs and hit the front door. Unbelievably, he had no injuries except a small cut down his arm where the door had splintered as it was blew off its hinges.

He also said the houses in that row, Numbers 145 - 153 had there cellar walls removed and rebuilt with sand incase the houses did come down, they could always ecape into the next houses cellar.

  2. Hiya everyone. I suffer from weak lower back muscles. I bent down to give my great aunty a cuddle last week and my back went on me yet again. Its right across my lower back and around the hips, Ive just started a new job and dont really want to take time off. Im taking high dose co-codomol. Is there any advice from anyone else in here who has suffered the same to help me out????

  3. My large scale map clearly shows these their numbers were 24,26&28 there was also another large building at the top called Carlton House..

Carlton House is still there, and very much lived it. The owners told me few days ago they opened the basement as it had been sealed somepoint in the 50's. What they found was amazing! Row among ow of stone pews which would suggest it must of been used as a temporary church at somepoint before any of the churches were built in Carlton. The house was built in the 1720's.
  4. Im taking my grandma's wedding dress, It was made in 1955 out of embosed damask and cost her £33 11s per yard and she had 11 yards of material. Still got the 8ft long veil to it and the wooden spoon and horseshoe thing she held wit her flowers.

  5. Yes Jackson it was an air raid shelter, a square concrete ARP one, there used to be one in next door to where I lived on Nottingham Rd New Basford which during WW2 was an air raid warden base, made a great den, think theres still one at end of terraced houses on Prospect Street Radford

Dont know if you can make it out or not, But this house at the end of Kirks Buildins, Carlton Still has its WW2 air raid shelter up against the wall.
