  1. How can they be dungarees when they are just normal jeans? Dungarees by definition literally do have the bib and brace you mention. These have the same seam as all my 501's bought through the 60's and 70's. No shop has ever called them dungarees in the 40 + years I've been buying/ wearing them.
  2. Very kind of you! The ones referred to as selvedge are definitely different to the ones normally found in retail shops in the States though, when I was in Florida I went to many jeans outlets and they are all non selvedge seamed......
  3. My uncles father, Sir Albert Martin was the Martin part of Martin Emprex.
  4. This is a selvedge type seam. Check the distinctive seam against " normal " Levi's.This type are generally a heavier weight denim too.
  5. Lucky you, mine fom 1966 was stolen from my mums washing line at the time it was looking really worn in!
  6. Trevor S, The Levi 501's I mention at around the £200 mark are different to the ones sold in most retail outlets, for instance, here in Nottingham, John Lewis sell the " normal" ones at around £80. The stupidly priced ones have what is referred to as a "selvedge seam", which involves two separate pieces of denim with a white edge and red stitching being sewn together to give them the very distinctive seam that is no longer available on regular Levi's. In the absence of posting a pic, if you look at most of the characters in the film Grease, look at their turnups to see the difference. Lev
  7. I used to spend many an evening in there. It was in my leather jacketed phase, not that I was anywhere near old enough to have a motor bike, in fact I was only 13 or 14. I can recall The Beatles We Can Work It Out being played regularly on the juke box! The place had more than its share of dubious Nottingham characters, including one guy called Fred Dawson I think, and his mate a tall lanky greaser called Slim, who when I started wearing mod clothes, he said he would rather kick my head in than a mods, because I couldn't make up my mind which I'd rather be....nice bloke eh! Anyone else remem
  8. Urgent notice! The option to edit my above post seems to have disappeared and I have put the . (Dot) in the wrong place! It should read..... www.solidgoldgem.am
  9. Well mine certainly shrank! And do you remember in their early stage, if you sat on anything pale, the blue dye transferred over? I have recently bought some 501's with the red edged "selvedge" line that are stupidly priced now, around £200 and up, and they are nowhere near as good as the ones back then. Speaking of which, I have quite a few pairs of " originals" and if anyone that is still fairly slim is interested, are for sale!
  10. Mudgie, pretty sure we're talking about the same suede boots from Wakefields, but weren't they called Fell boots? There was a shop on Hyson Green called Stevensons where my Levi's came from. In fact I can remember my mum buying me a Levi's jacket from there with a Provident shopping cheque as times were hard. The only things I got from Jeffs were a pair of " Lord John of Carnaby Street " hipsters, and a check shirt similar to what Stevie Winwood of the Spencer Davis group wore. Those army and camping type places including Wakefields often had stuff for sale that was a mod necessity, I reca
  11. Well, sort of. If you were a listener to the original Gem AM, and were disappointed that the station that now carries part of its name is not playing what the original one did, be disappointed no more! It's Internet only, just like this forum, so if you are reading this you can tune in! The DJ line up has many of the originals, Andy Marriott ( Marrow). Len Groat, Krissi Carpenter, Paul Burbank, Mark Mason, and me, along with a few that weren't on the original station, but have years of experience on other stations near and far, Brian Savin for instance, who spent many years at BRMB in B
  12. Ah! Understood. I can still hear her now........" Izes........Izes........tea and cawfee inside...."
  13. Mondo is a regular at the bi annual Motown And Soul discos that I do for Macmillan Cancer Care. Not to mention Jan, and a few other Dungeon boys. Next one is early November at The Polish Club Sherwood Rise.
  14. Loved their song " La De Da I Love You" ! Inez and Charlie's that is.And you've reminded me I saw Jimmy Cliff there, it was at the time of his non Ska type song "Give And Take" I believe.........I say I believe as it was a long time ago, and there were other factors involved too! ;-)
  15. Sorry, can't play you " Wake me, shake me, " there's no such song!I could play you " Shake me, wake me" instead! Lol! Many white acts were featured there too, my favourite being a band called The Action, Amen Corner went down well I recall too, and a brother and sister act from Jamaica I think, called Root and Jenny Jackson. Anyone remember them?
  16. I know this is an old topic, and I thought I'd already replied, but I remember on the occasions either my mum or grandad took me to Skegness always walking past the place, I thought she did it live though, a bit like a fair ground attraction person using a microphone, could be wrong though!
  17. 501's were 52/6 in 1966, and the matching jacket was 63/- or 3 guineas as it was back then, so I doubt the jeans were under £2.
  18. He used to frequent a place called Food For Thought in Nottingham during the 80's too.
  19. Should add that one of Wigan Casino's original DJ's also plays at The Westgates, Kev Roberts.
  20. Hi De Da Pete, In Nottingham in the 60's were a number of clubs that played the music that became called Northern Soul years later. The best in my opinion was The Dungeon, (thread elsewhere on this site) It was a magical place for soul music, especially to someone like me, actually a few years younger than the legal age younhadbto be to get in! Earlyish Motown, Atlantic, and other almost unheard of labels featuring the best soul music around was played, alongside many acts from the world of soul could be seen regularly, including Edwin Starr, The Spellbinders, Lee Dorsey to name a few. A
  21. The ultra camp Miss Martine has recently been gigging in Nottingham @D2 Lower Parliament St. Also, a number of the former NJD DJ's have been getting together for a couple of reunions of late, unfortunately, as one of the boys who is still gigging, I didn't make it!
  22. Made to measure " mod " suit from March the tailors, where Next is now on Long Row. 18 guineas, can't remember if the payments were 9 bob a week, or 18/-.....?
