  1. With you Ace. I recommend that any forum users in doubt about the potential issues read not only Orwell's '1984', for a fictional view, but also his 'Homage to Catalonia' for an historical example of how information can be used when it falls into the 'wrong' hands.
  2. Where during the 50s in Nottingham city centre would I have caught Midland general route B4 (destination Ripley?) ?
  3. I was lucky enough to drive that large prairie (4141) on the GCR - a fab 60th birthday gift.
  4. I was going to post a photo taken in March 2010 of the train (sadly diesel not steam) at the Grand Canyon end of the line but failed as 'the attachment was too big'. Loved our trip to Arizona, fantastic variety of scenery (plus baseball spring training).
  5. When my Mum and Nan needed to bribe us to go shopping with them in the City Centre, they would promise us a visit to the cafe(teria) on the top floor of Woolworth's - tell me I remember this correctly. Our treat was to have egg, chips and beans followed by rice pudding with liberal use of the sugar sifters positioned on each table.
  6. We used to walk in a crocodile from Church Hill School in Kimberley up High Street to a hall (on James St, I think) where meals were served for us and other schools. Worse thing was rice pudding with 'ricebergs' floating in it. You put in a blob of jam and wizzed it round until it was a pink, gloopy mess. I figured out that if I pocketed my dinner money rather han buying tickets on Monday morning I could afford a bag of chips and an ice-lolly each lunchtime. I was soon found out though.
  7. Retruning from a, these days, rare visit to Nottingham (where I broke the jinx I usually put on Forest!) I noticed the white tip as I joined the M1 from Nuthall Road - sure it wasn't there last time I visited.
  8. Just taken delivery (via ebay) of 2 Book Law publications - Steam memories 1950s - 1960s: No. 31 Around Nottingham and No 43 East Coast Main Line 2. Each comprises 70 b&w photos supplying shed loads of nostalgia. Rekindling memories, especially Attenborough, Kimberley (putting pennies on the line to see who could get the largest, flattest one), and glorious days at Grantham. Highly recommended.
  9. I confess to a quick bit of Googling to prompt my memory. I loved this programme which featured the slapstick antics of Charlie Drake and his partner Jack Edwardes. Thanks to turnipnet.com for this quote: Mick would then say to Montmorency “One of these days I’m going to lose my paddi-whack with you”. Charlie’s catchphrase was “Mick not to touch Mont!”
  10. My favourite 1950s programmes included The Range Rider (Jock Mahoney) with Dick West (The All-American Boy), Kit Carson especially the series with the Night Riders, Whirligig (did Mr Pastry feature in this?), All Your Own - a kind of talent show, and Robin Hood. In my early years, when we had our first 9" TV I loved all the Watch With Mother programmes shown in the middle of the day: Picture Book (with the delicious Patricia Driscoll who was Maid Marian for a while), Andy Pandy, The Woodentops, The Flowerpot Men, Rag, Tag & Bobtail. And listening to the likes of Paul Temple, Journey Into
  11. Couldn't spot this on my scan through the forum - as incomers to Nottingum we were taken with the expression: "You'll (or Thou'll) get wrong not yer!" - meaning "Oh dear, you will get into trouble!"
  12. If asked "What's for dinner?" My mum would say "Windmill pie, if it gers round yer lucky."
  13. Mr (Fred?) Price, the baker, delivered to us in COD Chilwell in the 50s. He was also the choirmaster at Attenborough and recruited me to be a boy treble.
  14. I lived in Chilwell depot on two occasions (1950-52 & 1955-58). My Dad was in the RAPC based at RPO Nottingham and we had army quarters, first on Williams Road, then on Church Crescent. We went to the AKC, The Globe, many times. I particulary remember seeing Pal Joey and Thunder Road plus the Chidren's Club on Saturday mornings. Happy Days!
