  1. Banjo48....I concur 100% with your thoughts. Know 2 families already over here from Brit and they are having to leave because they cannot get residency. They've been here 4 and 6 years respectively and have engineering jobs up the top end of WA. They started applying for residency soon after they each got here but..............
  2. Oztalgian..re #453 - Same down here in Tassie and going Oz wide. 1.5 metres minimum divide puts you on the other side of the road in some areas down here. It will cause more anger and tensions, particularly if cyclists decide to ride 2 abreast (legal) which can then equate to say 1.5 metres for the 2 cyclists plus the mandatory 1.5 metre space takes up most of your average lane width. Single lane highway with oncoming traffic negates crossing over to overtake so....stuck behind the cyclists. It would be nice if cyclists rode in single file now this new rule is in but, word is that cyclin
  3. Careful Banjo48, our newer entrants are greeted with open arms...providing that they have entered the country legally and through the legitimate refugee entry system. I suppose some will pick fault with that rant as well?

  10. A Vicar's wife was expecting a baby, so he stood before the congregation and asked for a raise. After much discussion, they passed a rule that whenever the Vicar's family expanded; so would his salary. After 6 children, this started to get expensive and the congregation decided to hold another meeting to discuss the Vicar's expanding salary. A great deal of yelling and bickering ensued as to how much the Vicar's additional children were costing the Church and how much more it could potentially cost. After listening to them for about an hour, the Vicar rose from his chair and spoke, "Childr

  17. Senior citizens are constantly being criticised for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others. However, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took: - The melody out of music, The pride out of appearance, The courtesy out of driving, The romance out of love, The commitment out of marriage, The responsibility out of parenthood, The togetherness out of the family, The learning out of education, The service out of patriotism, The Golden Rul
  18. Out of all the fish and chip shops that I have frequented down through the years, I still reckon that Chippy on Wollaton Street was the best to date. Their fritters were big and golden, their chips melted in your mouth. A lot different to the dried up offerings on sale these days that have been pre-cooked in some factory before delivery to the chippy to heat up in his vats.
  19. It wasn't the old News House Theatre on Upper Parliament Street, was it? PTP have a good photo of it...http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM019075&pos=1&action=zoom&id=92841
  20. Yes, banjo48...will concur with you on his Cumberland pork sausages. We would buy them whenever they were available in Melbourne. Haven't managed to find them down here in Tassie.
  21. I remember the brown paper laid over my father's bare back and my mother running a warm iron over the paper. That was back in the early 50s, the iron was one of those you heated on the stove and my father swore by it for the relief to his back pain.
  22. FLY2...re #92 Remember the area well, very well. However, we left Wollaton in 63 after selling the Shell garage next to the Hemlockstone Pub to the Co-op. Can't remember any ice cream van parking at the end of the Vale, only the 63 bus that used it as a turn around and terminus. Hung about with the local boys and did we have fun. The meeting place was directly across the road from the garage at house of one of the fella's - all at that stage were into m/bikes. Great days indeed...
