  1. Just had to add my bit to this thread,I started on the gas board in 1959 at the age of 15 I,am a month younger than Joe, he was of course in Sheffield and I in Nottingham but our paths crossed once in Long Eaton where the East Midland gas fitters used to go for refresher courses but nothing special although I did delight in his fame knowing like me he carried the compo roll on his shoulder and waited for corpo buses to get from job to job also believe he carried two sticks to beat out time at the bus stop(so i was told) I was also in Australia in 1972 when he got busted for drugs in Adelaide
  2. I watched this on youtube a couple of months ago and then got our 46 year old daughter to come round and see how it was back then.Working for the gasboard saw a lot of poverty when we had to go around with our own debt collector and if he could not get any money we had to disconnect and remove gas stoves.Lived in the medders myself(Atlas Terrace) but I remember the rent was 10bob a week and dad on the railway got 10 quid a week, normal now would be at least 25% going on rent etc funny world....

Also had to laugh that it was bitterly cold here on Saturday only reached 15C..........
  12. Hi as some of you know I pop in every so offen and then disappear for a few months, can I add another little topic to this,I too used to clock in at the EMGB at 7.45am most mornings since 1959 (you were allowed 2:59sec after 7.45am) then docked 15mins,we had a little strike for half a day(the only one we had ) and one result was no longer having to clock in. Now my main point who remembers that the Motor Cycle lic testing was carried out around ,HuntingdonSt ,Woodboro Rd,Shelton and Wellington St always remember the examiner steping out into the road for emergency stops,I gether one picked the

The Old Market Square 1968 took me back to the Christmas scene every year as a child when the tree was delivered, was it from Norway? but the most exciting thing was the countdown on the front of the Evening Post leading up to Christmas. The Radio Times with Christmas/Boxing day, here in Australia its 25 and 26 Dec just the same as everyday . The picture of 7000 Britannia was also special, got to the York railway museum a few years ago and stood looking at" Millard" remembering train -spotting at Grantham back in the 50s.....Enough...

  21. I think the cafe on London Rd was the one that had a bit of history back in 1959 because the owner then (and something like Flash harry comes into mind) was selling cup final tickets at touts prices and the tickets came from the players ,can anyone throw any light on this,It was in the Evening Post at the time Also on London Rd outside the old station(central?) there was a cafe which was a old goods carriage used to go there when fetching coke they had the worse tea I have ever drunk because it sat stewing over a flame all day and was just topped up and they had rock cakes which were well n

  24. Having been away from this site for quite a while,i have returned to add to this thread. I worked for the gas board on Woodboro Rd from 1959 and of course carried the tools all over Nottm and so remember with fondness many of the cafes, the routine was depot 7.45am to 8.30am and then off to the cafe for breakfast till 9.30am and hope the reps don't come around and catch us.This went on for many years but slowly died when 'Bonus" came in because then you could earn upto an extra 60% of your wages by doing around 13hrs work in 8hrs not to be sneezed at. So lets get back to the point(shops) on Wo
