  1. Re your post on The Bobbers Mill crossing you and the chap who answered your post you are totally wrong with regards to some of the detail. I am Marie (nee Marshall) and I am the 3rd oldest of my 4 siblings. You were correct as far as our family name but were wrong in what you said about my mother. She didn't go around in an army greatcoat & boots pushing a "barrow" if your referring to my youngest sister Jaqueline  I know for a fact that she had a push chair, the only one of us that had special needs was my brother Peter who was 4th of the 5 of us, he suffered with a heart murmur from birth. I really would ask people to get their facts right before submitting throw away comments on other people's lives.

The chap that said Peter had Callipers is also totally wrong, I don't know who he was talking about but it wasn't my brother!!

My apologies for any comments which may have caused distress. I, and some other members who have posted and mentioned your family, are recalling people and places from many years ago and have probably been inaccurate.

I have photos of all my Berridge years but can't see anyone I recognise as Peter although I do recall him being a pupil at Berridge.

After so many years, it's very easy to get mixed up. I think it was thought that your family lived at the railway house but, again, perhaps this isn't correct.

What sort of school was Whitemoor? Primary? My cousins lived in Hayling Drive and the youngest certainly went to Whitemoor Nursery School.

  8. Hi Jill,

I was just scrolling through posts on Bobbers Mill when I came across your post on the Wheatsheaf Hotel. I remember it well, I used to fetch fish and chips for the drinkers in the beer garden.I would climb over the wall where the swings used to be,and across to the fish and chip shop. It would have been around 1952 to 56. What a shame that it is to be a Macca,s site. I now live in Australia emigrated in 56, attended Whitemoor and Ellis schools. I have tried to contact old friends with no luck.

  9. Hi Jill, I dont know if you're still interested in the Barber family thread that I came across only today as I was researching the family but I have strong connections with Lamb Close as my grandfather was head gardener there for 40 years and my father grew up there and indeed I spent many years as a young girl running around the grounds. I think I read where you had some old photographs which my father and I - he's 90 next week - would love to see, we have our own as well obviously. I have messaged Tom Barber as well to see if he is still interested in old stories etc. Many thanks anyway in anticipation.

  10. Hi everyone

Have just joined and very interested in the history aspect.

I was born in Bilborough, Wigman Road, when the estate was built. Attended Glenbrook schools and Bilborough Grammar (though they probably deny it).

Since marrying have lived in Eastwood, Watnall, Newthorpe, West Hallam, Long Eaton and both sides of Nuthall.

Grandparents had a corner shop selling groceries from 1920's to 1960's on Gladstone Street Radford which I remember well.

My Mum at 93 still has lots of memories of Hyson Green and Radford and only this morning was telling me a tale about 'top and bottom barley' where she played as a child.

  11. Any one from Kirkstead st Hyson green

  14. Jill I think the Whitemoor pub is on the other side of the road. The Wheatsheaf is on or near Bobbers mill bridge. They are two different pubs. Please correct if I'm wrong.

  17. Hi Jill: Managed to find this pic of David Beecher Sparrow, B.Sc., on an archive site for Apsley Grammar School only a year or so after he left the Mellish. Any family resemblances? (Not very clear because its from a cutting of a group of staff.)
