  1. I’ve almost given up on ‘Marksus’’ having recently purchased a nice sweater in there and then saw an old lady being interviewed on local news in Mansfield market place, wearing the same item. It was bad enough seeing an OLD lady wearing it but in MANSFIELD! Last year whilst in Miami I went very OTT extravagant and bought a Stella McCartney shirt for myself. I absolutely love it but almost immediately had regrets at spending such a large amount on one little item that I won’t wear very often because it’s too special. Primark is very good for basics, such as t-shirts, which will set y
  2. Has the snow arrived early over there Ian? I was talking to my brother-in-law today, he lives in Victoria, BC and he was saying that snow is forecast for tomorrow, yet they have a temperate climate similar to the UK
  3. Happy Birthday from me too Loppy!
  4. Pete the Feet was a regular entertainer there. We had an ‘interest’ in the venue at one time and came up from our home in Hertfordshire on a number of occasions. I think Roy Hudd was on stage on the opening night of ‘The New Vic’ and on another occasion George Melly.
  5. Nice to see you back Gem! Could it be The Malt Cross anyone?
  6. I didn’t know anyone when I walked in the place but now have lots of new best friends! There were 3 ladies sat in the corner sipping on their Barley Wine who asked me if I was looking for Ben ……
  7. I’ve never been familiar with Bulwell, having grown up the other side of town, although for years I was a patient at John Carberry’s Dental Surgery on Ragdale Road because he moved from Mansfield Road and we, (all the family) followed him to Bulwell. However, last Saturday afternoon we went to Bulwell to check it out. I didn’t even know there was a railway station and tram stop there until that day. We parked in the station car park and popped into the Horseshoe Inn (?) and never met so many friendly people! As soon as we entered the place 2 or 3 people came up to us and introduced them
  8. Around our neighbourhood Halloween celebrations are very civilised these days. The local Facebook group publishes a list of the houses that are happy to get Trick or Treaters knocking, which I think is a great idea, it means that old buggers like us don’t get disturbed whilst having dinner! It’s for kids anyway and ours have never lived up here. I heard some excited children walking up the road earlier, including a real tiny tot wearing a witch’s hat, the heavens had opened and they were absolutely drenched but having a good time. I’d got a stock of sweeties and chocolates in, just in case
  9. I’ve read that too @MRS B but I’ve also seen the opposite on Facebook, with suggestions to put the pumpkins out for wild animals so they don’t go to waste. Who to believe eh?!
  10. It’s 50 years tonight since my first proper date with the young man I would eventually marry. We’d met fleetingly a few months earlier in the Flying Horse but he was just passing through Nottingham on business and I was in a relationship with someone, but he made sure he got my phone number! Out of the blue he rang me and we had that first date at The Chateau, Wilford Lane and those 50 years have flown by so fast, so much has changed in this World we live in but I’m pleased I went for that Berni meal that night and as far as I can remember, Halloween was just an American excuse to dress up
  11. The weather has been incredibly mild in Nottingham this past week, a bit wet at times too (but we needed it!) Last evening we were at a friend’s birthday party and amazingly, for the end of October, we were sitting outside in their garden, til 2 am. Admittedly they had a fire-pit going but nobody needed a jacket on. Brilliant night, lots of champagne, wine and Lebanese food, but I was pleased the clocks went back as we’re not used to such late nights these days!
  12. Actually yes, we were on a family zoom meeting with the telly on in the background and there was a man who I know being interviewed, with a big old gun. Got to watch it on Catch-up now.
  13. Sorry to hear of your troubles Trogg, hope you’re feeling much better now x
  14. What a lovely few days you’ve had Terry, congratulations on reaching your Diamond Wedding Anniversary and I hope King Charles has sent you a card. Take things easy today and enjoy your birthday x
  15. Bring back Boris He wasn’t so bad after all!
  16. How tragic for your friend to lose her child in such an accident. However, this would not have involved my uncle as he was a milkman only in the mid 1950s which was surely at least a decade before the accident you’re referring to.
  17. We moved to a brand new housing estate in Arnold in 1958. At the time there were no local shops and groceries were only available in Arnold town centre a mile or so away. Very few families had cars and I can’t remember there being a bus service in the early days. The Nottingham Co-op were quick to see the opening and they delivered milk, bread and groceries to the (mainly) young families in the neighbourhood. Within a couple of years a row of essential shops were built so the Co-op deliveries weren’t as necessary. One of my uncles was a Co-op milkman for a little while, I don’t know whi
  18. Both of my grandads passed away in 1954, when I was only 4 years old. I didn’t see a lot of my paternal grandad because my Daddy didn’t get on with him. To be honest I just remember him looking like Winston Churchill and sitting in a big wing-backed chair with a glass of beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other. He lived with my lovely granny on Devonshire Promenade off Derby Road but when granny was widowed she couldn’t afford to stay in that house so moved in with her spinster sister on May Avenue in Wollaton. This was my great-grandparents house from new but great-grandad had passed
  19. Before Uncle Charlie left the pub they bought a house on Moor Lane and drank in the Griffin, as far as I know he never set foot in the Horse and Groom again. Yes @Oztalgianit was a Home Ales pub. @mary1947 in Charlie and Rene’s day they never did meals, only Ham /Cheese and Onion cobs. He improved the pub, out of necessity, by building a conservatory out the back to enclose what were previously outside loos. There was a barn at the rear of the property which they converted into a ‘function room’ and no doubt that was where meals were served when a new landlord took over. Before he
  20. @mary1947I’m guessing a bit but I reckon he was in Linby from mid 1950s til 1982, when he retired at 60. The pub was in our family for around 100 years as Uncle Charlie took it over from my Great Uncle George Jennison, whose father kept the pub before him.
  21. We both had our Covid and Flu jabs today in our local pharmacy. We’d delayed having them because we’ve been busy going on holiday and other important appointments and didn’t fancy adverse reactions. This was my 4th and husband’s 5th Covid shots. Administered by an Indian girl who did her medical training in Russia and has come to England to get registered. She speaks fluent Russian. It was interesting to meet and chat with such a lovely young lady. The owner of the pharmacy normally dishes out vaccines but she’s studying Sanskrit right now. Crikey, that looks blinkin’ hard!
  22. I don’t recognise any of those artists, which seems odd because I was still living in Nottingham and going to local clubs and music venues.
  23. My uncle was the landlord of The Horse and Groom at Linby for many years and he always opened on Christmas Day lunchtime. Mum would get the turkey in the oven and we’d all go over to see him for an hour or so. Our local micropub, Doctors Orders, opens 12 til 3 on Christmas Day, we’ve popped in if we’re local but it gets pretty rammed with regulars, non-regulars, dogs and kids. I prefer a quiet family Christmas Day myself.
  24. I don’t remember it being a ‘postage paid’ envelope. I threw that in the bin too. The old cut up driving licences went in our bin instead of theirs, no difference!
  25. We both had our renewed licences a couple of months ago and never sent the expired ones back, I just cut them up and put in the bin. I don’t see the point in wasting a couple of quid on postage and DVLA haven’t so far asked where they are.
