  1. Arghhhh, somebody else post a question (if I'm correct of course) can't get thinking too hard just yet, only just woken up ;-)
  2. I'm sure that's the one Melissa, not that I know the area at all !!
  3. I bet our grandmas knew each other Stephen ....... but we'll never know!
  4. Welcome to Nottstalgia BHB. I spent a few years in Netherfield in the 50's before moving to Arnold, then was at Carlton-le-Willows in the 60's.
  5. So sorry to hear this news Helen and wish Paul a speedy recovery.
  6. My granny was educated at Mundella, she was born in 1898.
  7. You don't have to study Statistics at college to realise that your chances of winning big are very slim but you have to be in it to win it and so long as gambling doesn't take over your life and you can afford to lose a bit of money then it's fun.
  8. BIG BUMP OF QUOTE !!! I'm embarrassed to say that I was one of those people who managed to get into the 99 for nothing ........... my friend and I would saunter casually into the Bridgeford Hotel lobby and leg it up the several flights of stairs until we reached a door which opened up behind the bar of the 99. Great times, one of the best clubs in Nottingham around 1970.
  9. Melissa, seeing as I don't have an on-line gambling account I won't be placing a bet this year, in fact I don't even know which horses are running. Now you've reminded me, I'd better nip out and pick up a Florida Lottery ticket. Of course I wouldn't want to win it though because I'd have to pay tax on my winnings here :-)
  10. I like a flutter on the National and sometimes the Epsom Derby but don't bother with any other races. A few years ago, when we lived down South, a good friend of ours had a box at a lot of race courses and we were invited on several occasions. We had some great times, enjoying the hospitality but never won anything. Every year I place a bet on a couple of runners in the National, knowing full well that they won't win me any money. The first time I ever gambled was in 1968 when I placed a bet on Red Alligator and it WON. My granny was always betting on the horses, I remember on a Saturday
  11. Well done Melissa, no wonder you're chuffed, that's pretty good going landing a job on your first interview! I also got the job following my first interview but it was a lot easier in 1967 ........ in those days one could leave a job in the morning and walk into another one in the afternoon! I worked as a secretary at Thorn Bendix in New Basford. I was extremely happy there and worked with some fantastic people. I stayed at the same place for 8 years, in different roles.
  12. Melissa, the landlord of 'The Fox and Grapes' pub near Sneinton Market was murdered after closing time, 50 years ago. The pub was known locally as 'Pretty Windows' because strangely enough it had pretty windows! You could never imagine that now, when you see the building, as it's a right dump. I think it was called 'Peggers' in recent years. If I'm wrong then somebody will correct me I'm sure. There's quite a lot of stuff on here about the murder, somewhere.
  13. Thanks Chrissie, I'm really sorry to be missing the meet-up and the ribbing we give each other!
  14. Yes, thank you Michael, we intend having a really good time and to recharge our batteries after a long winter ........ even though it wasn't such a bad one thankfully. Can't beat the warmth and sunshine of Florida though ...... 24c now, at 7 pm.
  15. I just had a lovely surprise. A delivery of a beautiful Mothers Day bouquet to our home for the next 4 weeks in the USA. They're good kids who know how to make me happy! Wonder what they want, lol
  16. What a great daughter you are Melissa :-)
  17. Lovely pic Michael, what a sweetie! Our sons are 100 miles away but as we're off on holiday tomorrow we haven't seen them this weekend but I've had cards, phone calls and a lovely session on FaceTime with our 11 month old granddaughter who was showing off climbing on and off the sofa. I think by the time we get back from our hols she'll be walking. Oh dear, they grow up too fast.
  18. Thank you from me too Paul. Every year I see the Mothers Day cards in the shops and wish I was buying one for my Mum but sadly I haven't had to do that for 26 years. RIP to my best friend and best Mummy in the World.
  19. Amusing story Smiffy, intriguing too. Would the bush have been hiding in one of your amps or speakers? What was your group called? Looking forward to your next story, much better than reading about politics!!
  20. Is that still the official retirement age for a man? I have no idea as both my husband and I have been spending our OAP for a few years already!
  21. Happy Birthday DavidW and Merthyr Imp. Enjoy your special day
  22. That's a shame Melissa, but then a professional footballer only has until early 30's before he has to find something else to do for the rest of his life. They can't all go on to be managers!
