  1. Compo # 19, my goodness, you were a brave little lad, walking through that tunnel. My mates and I would only dare go about 20 yards in, it was scary and damp. There were so many great and natural playgrounds for us kids in the 50s and 60s, so many lovely open spaces to play without our parents freaking out if we were home a little late.

  2. We've had a base for work / holiday home in Miami for the past few years ........ suppose I'm risking some members saying 'Oh get you' or even worse but I won't worry!

As my husband has now decided that he's had enough of all the travelling that was necessary with his work we decided to sell the place. Put it on the market in December and had 3 offers but for various reasons the deals fell through so we decided to go over for the whole of April for a working holiday. In the first two weeks of the month we had several viewings (and offers) which made it difficult to relax as we had to be always tidy, plus we had our son, daughter-in-law and baby staying with us for some of the time. Well on 16th April contracts were signed and the buyers wanted to move in on 30th April. Speedy to say the least! Instead of a holiday we've had a very hectic couple of weeks and yesterday, which was the day we originally planned to fly back to UK, we had packers in to put all our stuff into storage in Miami because we don't know where to send it and we haven't got room here. After that very busy day we then flew home feeling very sad but we hope it's the right thing to have done.

I lived in Netherfield then Arnold with my parents then since marrying 39 years ago we've lived in 5 different locations in the Northern Home Counties and been back in Nottingham for the past 10 years. We're used to moving and we've loved each house we've lived in but over the years we just liked to have a change but I've always been upset (proper tearful!) on moving day.

  3. Belated Happy Birthday Carni and Littlebro. I have an excuse, I wasn't reminded by anyone, plus I've had no internet connection for a couple of days. Back in the UK again, so sorry I didn't bring some sunshine back with me.

  4. I never ever use a mixer, just a fork to beat the batter, just like my Mum used to do. (She didn't have a mixer!). I don't bother with salt, as she did ...... no reason for that at all, just don't bother. And also don't bother with a drop of water because we always have 1% milk anyway, whereas in the 'olden days' you didn't have a choice with yer milk. I wouldn't say I'm a good cook at all but I'm proud of my Yorkshires, lol.

  5. Student food? Our boys went to Loughbough Uni. We bought a house in the town when the eldest one started there and kept it for 9 or 10 years. We spent a fair amount of time in Loughborough during the summer, re-furnishing and general maintenance on the house. What we did notice was that the town centre was pretty dead during the summer, bit like Lenton and Beeston maybe?

  6. Oh Katy, that did make me laugh! My pals and I would tell porkies to our parents too, about staying at friends overnight, I suppose we all did it. There was one Saturday night, the end of Goose Fair, and we'd all got it planned, we were staying at each other's houses as far as parents were concerned. Friends of ours, a brother and sister called Paddy and Deirdre, invited us to stay at their house up Sherwood Rise somewhere so at midnight several of us went to the house. We all sat chatting away, don't think there was any booze as we were a little underage for that malarkey. Suddenly the father of Paddy and Deidre appeared in the grand sitting room in just his underpants, we didn't even know that he was home at the time. He yelled at us and told us to clear off. Well, where do you go at 1 am on a drizzly October night, with no money and having told our parents we were staying with friends. So, we walked down Mansfield Road into town and went and sat by an air vent outside the Beachcomber where an all-nighter was going on. We couldn't get in as we'd spent all our money at the fair, but there was warm air coming our way! Hung about in town until a sensible time to go home on the Sunday morning.

Another time 2 or 3 of us gals were walking across Trent Bridge towards town when a mini-bus pulled up, full of young men, who asked us if we wanted to go to a party. We jumped in, thinking about it we must have been totally crazy, and ended up at Langar RAF station (I think, correct me if there wasn't one there). Had a good night and we were actually pretty lucky because a lad we knew was also there and he gave us a ride home next morning, good job because Langar was the back of beyond to us!!

  7. Surely there's no need for you to unsubscribe, just don't bother to log onto Nottstalgia ....... There are no email alerts or anything else you'll need to worry about. Like Darkazana commented, a little perseverance might help, there are hundreds of topics and Nottstalgia has several thousand members.

  8. We bought a Sony laptop, but it's more of a tablet with a keyboard separate. It's Windows 8, we bought it in Miami in November and left it so we could use it when we're over here. When we came here the other week we brought our old laptop just in case we couldn't figure the new one out ( we're not very clever when it comes to technology!). So, we cannot get the hang of the new computer and the old laptop has given up the ghost completely while we've been here! Feel like my right arm's been chopped off, good job I have an iPad with me. The trouble is we've had work to do on the computer ...... The other day I spent hours and hours just typing a letter and trying to scan it. I got angry ........ I'm supposed to be on holiday!!!!

Wish I'd read this thread properly before we bought the new laptop, but do we have a choice? Is Windows 8 all you can get nowadays?

  9. I have a large collection of old postcards, mostly sent by my Grandad to his Mother asking for her to send a parcel of clean collars to where he was working (for Boots) in the early 1900s. Occasionally I dip into the shoe box that they live in and pull a few out to read and look at the fabulous photos of mainly High Streets around the country. The reason for this ramble is because one postcard was sent to a relation and all it says on the address is THE BEER OFF, LONG EATON. Must have only been one there in those days then .....
