  1. Our eldest son and his 10 year old daughter came to visit us in Lilliput for a couple days, it’s been so good to see them as we’ve not seen the little un since last Christmas although Nick popped in to see us in April.  They’re only 100 miles away but we’ve all got hectic lives, yes even us two oldies!  Today we went on Sandbanks beach and it was breezy although sunny.  That tough kid was in the sea up to her waist but no way was I going to join her, nor was her Daddy!  Calm has been restored now so hoping we can enjoy a relaxing few days to do our own thing, might have a little trip to Brownsea Island if the weather stays reasonable.

  2. We keep it simple. When we’re running low on our prescription drugs I look at the date of last prescription and if it’s coming up to 2 months ago I toddle a few hundred yards to Carrington Pharmacy and order a new batch.  No problems, no issues, delightful and extremely helpful staff who have super memories, know our names and also what’s on our prescriptions!  We go there rather than GP surgery for our flu jabs too.  Got no complaints really about our GP practice, there are only 2 GPs and 2 or 3 nurses so it’s not manic and fortunately we don’t need a docs appointment very often anyway.  What I appreciate most is that the doctors surgery and the pharmacy are both within a few hundred yards of home …….. then we have 2 NHS hospitals within a couple of miles and 3 Private hospitals within 20 minutes drive.  Have to think about all that stuff when you get older!

  3. I never realised that building used to be a Birkin factory.  A Watson Fothergill masterpiece.   I frequented a club in the early 1970s in the far left corner of Broadway, called ‘Pharoahs’. It later became a punk club called ‘Sandpipers’ I believe ……. that was after my clubbing days though.   The Guy Birkin factory I was familiar with, on Beech Avenue in New Basford, is still there I think, in a very delapidated state, and can be seen from the Forest, sitting on top of the hill.

  4. Gold and Dunn may have been on Birkin Avenue at some stage but I used to walk past their place on Beech Avenue every day from 1967-1975 when I worked at Thorn Bendix further along the road, opposite the Birkin lace factory.  My parents bought a lot of reproduction furniture from Gold and Dunn and in fact we bought a carpet from them in the mid 70s and had it delivered and fitted at our house near Banbury.  There was an issue with the carpet and they had excellent customer service and replaced it immediately.

  5. Wonder if the nit nurse still goes into schools?  Doubtful I suppose, I don’t remember her going to the schools my boys were at about 30/40 years ago, although they did have nits, discovered and treated by me ……. I had them too when I was at infant school, ‘they only go for clean hair’ my proud Mum said!!

  6. This mob have had control for 30-40 years, the city electorate are to blame for giving them free reign with the council tax income, a council tax that is second highest in the country.  I despair every time I step out of our house but no amount of complaining about non-existent services does a bit of good.

  7. @nonnaByou’ve reminded me of when we had a small flock of sheep and needed to move them to a field in the next village. This meant walking them right through our village, across a main road and into the new field, about a mile away, so we decided that 6am on a Sunday was the best time.  It was all hands on deck, our kids plus family visiting from Canada.  The lanes were quiet but the sheep didn’t behave at all, they ran into peoples gardens, trampling and eating their flowers, our Jack Russell tried to help by nipping at the sheeps ankles and barking, all us humans were shouting and urging the animals to go in the right direction, it was a pretty memorable day. Then when they’d munched that field they were brought back in a lorry!

  8. I’ve been wondering about Albert Smith and his tales of train driving, ballroom dancing and wine club.  He was a regular at the meet-ups, often with his lovely wife Barbara.  He wrote his life story,  had it bound and lent it to a few of the regulars.  He seemed pretty down when we last saw him and more or less stated that it would be the last time we saw him.
There are several more old regulars who don’t appear anymore, so sad, but it’s lovely when a name from the past re-surfaces.

  9. My husband had an appointment at The Park Hospital this morning and our electric gates decided they weren’t going to open, first time they’ve played up in years.  We tried all of our ‘clickers’ so it wasn’t a battery issue. Tried to use a special key to open them and they just wouldn’t budge.  He got a taxi there and back while I called a gate man who turned up quite quickly but can’t fix the issue for a few days, but at least he got the gates open and I don’t feel like I’m in prison.

I travelled from Nuthall to Alfreton High School it was twelve miles each way either MGO B3 or C5 bus both which went through Brinsley it was one shilling and threpence return or ninepence a single ticket.

I’m surprised you had to pay a bus fare Ian, I recall that if a pupil was at least 3 miles from school they had a free bus pass.  I just managed the free travel, living in Arnold and catching a Trent bus to Gedling.

  11. I played cricket when I was a kid, mainly because there were no other girls to play with on the new estate we lived on but apart from that I’ve always loved the game, spending many hours with my Dad at Trent Bridge. Dad also kept wicket for (I think) Gedling Miners Welfare.  The only time I’ve ever been to Blackpool was as a tiny baby when my Dad was playing cricket there! In fact I have lots of cricketing tales to tell and names to drop but won’t do that on an open forum!
