  1. I thought the Tinkers Leen was used to keep the canal topped up when the final lock to the Trent was in great use. There is/was an overspill on the far side of the canal that then disappeared underground. Colin
  2. Thanks for the reply obviously a different chippie. The one I am talking about was on the corner Stanley Rd. and was owned by Christine's auntie, Christine was my first serious girlfriend.................. heady days. Colin
  3. It is not unscrupullous to kill maggies they are classed as vermin afterall. Having seen first hand what they can do to eggs and nestlings I personally would not think twice about pulling ones neck. Shot a good few in my time too. Colin
  4. Blue tits in the nest box, buds on my blueberries and black berries. And more snow forecast Colin
  5. Trevor I can't be much help I am afraid. I have clear memories of boarding the boat just down stream of Trent Bridge, city side of the river and the boat was deffo The Pride of the Yare. Though which one I don't know. For the memory to be so clear it would have to be mid 50s. Colin
  6. Great maybe I am not that old after all. Colin
  7. Bloomin heck I have only just realised how old The Pride of The Yare was. The pici is circa 1910 and I can remember sailing on her from Trent Bridge in the 50s. Or maybe I should say I have just realised how bl**dy old I am. Colin
  8. It lost some of its character with the passing of the steam traction engines. I remember them with what seemed like huge generators strapped over the boiler. Never quite the same without the smell of coal and steam. Colin
  9. All my seed potatoes have arrived and are now on the window sill chitting. Be careful how you say that word. Colin

  13. Crikey this has brought back some memories. I was at Ellis till christmas 1961 and can remember most of those teachers. Yes Danny it was the same Walter Hadrill. What not a lot of people know is just how influential Walter was as to how the school was run. All the craft based learning was down to Walter and his ideas of secondary education. If you want to learn more google 'Headmaster, The Ellis Secondary School For Boys Nottingham'. This will bring up a paper written by Walter where he explains his thoughts and ideas. Colin
  14. Does anyone remember Robin who worked for Pork Farms. He used to work in the small factory behind the Sherwood shop. Made the most wonderful black puddings I think for competition and taught my SWMBO how to make pork pies. Result I still get the most tasty of pork pies pity he didn't teach her how to make black puddings. Colin
  15. My seed has been on order since Nov. Was informed on another site by one of Scotlands leading producers there may well be a shortage of certain vareities this year. On order I have Red Duke of York 1st early, Lady Christl 1st/2nd early and Picasso for main crop. Colin
  16. Runners are simplicity its self. Start them off in 6" pots, mid April when they get to about 6" high plant out 1 plant per Morrisons flower bucket. I have mine against a wall so that I can hang a support net for them. Then just keep them well watered and fed, I use Miracle Grow at every other watering. Never leave them on the plant to long they'll be as stringy as heck and it could stop the plant producing to its full potential. You should get between 4 to 6 pounds per plant. Spuds first earlies go in Morrisons flower buckets 2 seed per buckets late Feb in the green house. Compost about 4" de
  17. I been growing veg in containers for well over 20 years with some success I might add. My dustbins of main crop produced an average of 24lbs a bin last year, and my 16 runners produced as always enough to freeze for a year. I love my runners I do. I am most surprized no one has mentioned high potash feeds such as Tomorite as I find this invaluable when the fruits are swelling. What do I grow in my containers pretty much everything that I would grow if I had a lotty. Colin
  18. Hi Lizzie, I don't know about that, but there were warning systems in place during that time period. The Civil Defence bunker behind the Five Ways had direct connections to the early warning stations and the ability to then activate the sirens. This was supposed to give you four minutes warning of an impending attack, so that you could retreat to your home made shelter. Constructed from doors laid at an angle against an internal wall then covered with pillows etc for extra protection. Best advice I was given was to take up the airline crash position with your head between your knees. It did
