  3. Sorry to be pedantic Ian but boots are 'bulled' with black polish preferable Kiwi and iced water. Back in the old days webbing used to be 'blanco'd and it was white...
  4. Wonder if she was on secondment to the RN after all it was 1916 and she was running grain from Halifax to France.
  5. I would offer to wield the whip CF but you need someone with a stronger right arm
  6. Something else to hopefully make you jealous. With the raspberry glut well under way and the statutory jam made the lady came up with another idea, raspberry cordial frozen into ice cubes. She had not told me anything and just today gave me a cool glass of lemonade with a couple of said cubes in, just leave them to melt and you have a lovely tangy cold drink, ideal on a hot day.
  7. Col, bye a new valve from your description the body is cracked.
  8. The army needed them too. According to David Rinder during the battle for Normandy the battle group he was with needed over a 1000 replacements to keep 180 tanks in the front line.

  14. Focus, your not kidding. my lady who has never watched a footie match in her life because it is 'boring', I am in the garden and can see what is going on. Today there was a commotion from the lads across the road, so on went the tele to confirm England had scored. Sometime later another commotion bugger me the tele is on again to confirm the second goal. Then 10 minutes from time on goes the tele for the finale score. Finally she has just shouted upstairs "Croatia the people say that will be good for us." so she has watched the last 10 minutes of that one to.
  15. First runners of the year some salt butter and a baked spud lovely jubbly
  16. My son's girl friend has just buried her father what a rip off £4600 for car rental and a box and include council fee to open grave £700. I am like my old mate TK, he always reckoned the council should supply a black wheelie bin along with the garden bin etc. To me my body will be just waste nor more no less to be disposed off in the cheapest way possible. I saw one set up the other day, collect body, prepare and box same, taken to crem for disposal, no service nothing £1200. More to spend on the wake ......
  17. I know exactly what you mean Trogg. I may have mentioned it before, a few years I had a huge swelling in the rollock bag, in great trepidation I went to see the doc, "I think I know what it is but will send you for an ultrasound to make sure" Two weeks later I am lain on the table whilst the guy carefully roams his device all over my privates. After what seemed like an age he said "your worried about this aren't you sir" he must have seen the sweat, "I'm not supposed to do this but it isn't what you think it is, its just a liquid." I could have kissed him.
  18. More silly advice then Loppy keep them beans moist too it helps with bean set. My cumbers are in the green house which is not ideal as so are the toms and they love sunshine. I put the cumbers in a corner and shade with garden fleece seems to work for me.
  19. Think your right Ian with that trolly or trackless as mum would have said. Corner of Perry Road and Nottingham Road, cemetery behind the stone wall and Bairnswear behind the iron railings, in fact wouldn't mind betting mum was in there on that date.
  20. To explain further Loppy about F1s I also grow a runner bean called Firestorm, this is a runner crossed with a French bean and again is self pollinating due to that cross. From taste and sight you wouldn't know it was anything else but a runner but even if there is a lack of pollinators you will still get a good crop.
  21. Loppy, F1s are not repeat not GM plants or seed, the strain is developed using old fashioned breeding techniques, been around for years. As Jonab points out they will not always come true if you save the seed due to the selective breeding used to produce them. Where as 'heritage' varieties will come true. Back to cumbers, that fierce heat will be the problem, cumbers are a vine originally from India and man has cultivated them for at least 3000 years. As a vine they like warm humid conditions but not direct sunlight, known for their propensity to turn up the
  22. Ian, I am a bit sad, the lady does flowers etc, me I do fruit and veg just love being able to go to the back and pick fresh produce. She knows if she doesn't keep the flowery bit full I will come along with a planter and they will be veg there too, so she keeps very much on her toes. I do recommend some flowers and bushes to her but there is method in my madness everything I recommend is to attract pollinators.
  23. What does the woman expect special gaming chair for his comfort, he breaks his tele they buy him a new one, he don't need a sore back side they all need a bullet.......
  24. The other reason to prevent the males pollinating the females is the fruit will be very bitter, uneatable unless you have a strange taste. Jonab not quite right some cumbers have both male and female some do not, I grow all female varieties so have no problem with pollination just let them get on with it. Glad to hear your news Loppy, if it has been as hot there as it is here it could have been water stress, keep the ground around them moist/not wet all the time, another sign of this is little fruit turning yellow and dying on the plant.
